yawnr··on Vercel employee used customer information to pursue a personal trademark matter
useEffect is the biggest source of bugs in any react codebase bar none
yawnr··on Vercel employee used customer information to pursue a personal trademark matter
Hooks gained momentum because of advantages in composability and removing a lot of pain with HOCs. Brevity also helped. The obfuscation about re-renders and memoization of variables is absolutely a downside that I see junior devs really struggle with all the time — something that “just works” with class components.

Anyway, both are fine and usable haha. Just think there are arguments to be made on both sides.

lol pre hooks world was fine. Hooks are great but react took over the world because of the clarity of class component lifecycles. If hooks were there from the start it wouldn’t have been as popular.

Also Vercel/NextJS is like if DHH was charging people to use Rails. We are in the “enshittification” part of react development.

You are completely out of touch with reality and the people from all walks of life who have and care for pets. Please keep your terrible opinions to yourself.

Dupixent has completely changed my quality of life too. I’d effectively given up on ever feeling normal again. Cheers to science!

yawnr··on Profit-Price Spiral: Excess Profits Fuelling Inflation, Not Wages
It does really feel like the cat is out of the bag that producers anywhere in the supply chain of housing and food realized they could do whatever they want and we can all suck wind. Every significant expense I have is up more than 40% in the past two years.
yawnr··on Give It the Craigslist Test
The reality is more likely that because they had almost zero traction, they saw all the AI hype and decided to rework the whole product to call ChatGPT APIs to try to capitalize on the wave.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it worked in getting more money from investors because they can call themselves an AI company now!

yawnr··on I don’t want to sign up for your newsletter (2018)
I literally couldn’t buy something the other day without giving an email because “oh we’re paperless!” Was the response I got when I asked for a paper receipt instead.

Of course, 10 seconds later I got a “welcome to the family!” email.

Should be illegal.

yawnr··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
This is an extreme take but IMO New York is the only real American city. Maybe Boston and Chicago. Everything else is a glorified suburb. I wish we had good, small cities in this country, but we just don’t.
yawnr··on A song that uses AI to clone the voices of Drake and The Weeknd has gone viral
Yeah this is an important distinction that I don’t think is being properly communicated or emphasized. This is a song created by a human, with voice replacement.

Give Nomi some scratches from a stranger. Wonderful of you to care for him the best you can.
yawnr··on SpaceX alums are branching out and shaping the startup economy
VCs and other startups love to shower these people with money like they’re the second coming only to find out that their success was purely circumstantial and mostly a confluence of a ton of factors that had nothing to do with them like luck and timing.
yawnr··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
The statistical noise of opioid deaths is the depressing part?
yawnr··on We asked the SEC for reasonable crypto rules for Americans
But their kids probably will. Is a generational investment not a security? I’m not even trying to be cute. Everyone is competing with corporations for single family housing for a reason now.

yawnr··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
Congrats, genuinely. In my mid 30s with what I thought was a lot of money saved and can’t afford a 2 bedroom apartment. Feels hopeless.
yawnr··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
Not meaningfully. Prices are up 60% in 2 years. No chance there is that level of correction when 99% of mortgages have rates cheaper than the current market rate.
yawnr··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
Yep. Why live in a house when you can charge someone $1200/nt to stay there and a $600 cleaning fee? (Basically every house that can sleep more than 6 people in the northeast)
yawnr··on We asked the SEC for reasonable crypto rules for Americans
So — housing?
yawnr··on Bandcamp Unionizes
Yeah you live in a world where you don’t have the crushing weight of potentially having to go into life ruining debt to pay for healthcare. Where a decent college won’t put you into 200K of debt. Or not having any useful social safety net. Or not being able to retire because the government programs that support senior citizens are going to be bankrupted by the time you’re that old. I find surviving in America to be incredibly stressful, and by all measures I’m doing “well”.
yawnr··on The rise and fall of Birchbox, the startup valued at nearly $500M has vanished
Nah. People who go to b school are just out of ideas in their mid 20s and have already run a marathon. (Joking, mostly)
yawnr··on Introducing react.dev
The only people who look down on frontend or backend engineers are people who don’t understand what it means to be great in either domain, and are too arrogant to take the time to learn and appreciate its nuances.

Every engineer I’ve known who’s “looked down” on frontend or was dismissive of it was not only bad at frontend and didn’t understand what it takes to be good at it, but also a jerk about the perceived depth of their own knowledge.

yawnr··on Maybe treating housing as an investment was a mistake
What…?

300K post taxes is basically 150K, the are probably paying 60K+ in rent and another 30+ in other basic cost of living expenses.

Well they’re owned by Epic now, so that may not be up to them anymore.
yawnr··on Amazon Closing AmazonSmile
This is horrendous and is going to take away huge amounts of money from charities that rely on it.

Charities that customers care about, not Amazon executives.

The charity I support is the ASPCA, which gets significant funding from Smile and it’s going to translate directly into fewer animals getting care.

Shitty.
