yalforreca··on The worst program I ever worked on
I once worked on a game for the Wii using a 7 year old engine originally developed for the PS2. The company had a high turnover rate and the code was atrocious. The engine had been used for several games and each title introduced a new hack in the engine. You had the tipical spaghetti with meatballs mess with 2000+ lines functions and hacked code with comments like: "This code is for the E3 demo of the game xxx". Once I had to extend a 1000+ line switch statement.

But the worst I saw was something like this:

struct weapon { #ifdef xxx #include xxx #else ... #endif }

yalforreca··on Salary negotiations for techies
On my last job change I went from games development to a trading software gig. As an experienced games developer I as making less than £30K and I told the recruiter I wouldn't consider anything in finance for less than £45K. When he said that it was a huge jump in salary and that I would never get it I told him that it was a different industry and that game programmers are often underpaid. Turns out the entry level positions were all starting from £40k and I got a job for 2x what I was making before. Now, I have to add that I really didn't care if I got the job or not since I was hating myself for going to finance and I actually bullied the recruiter to work harder to find a role that suited me. Being able to walk out on a deal is a powerful motivator.
yalforreca··on Hosni Mubarak finally steps down
Portugal had a revolution in 1974 that ended an dictatorship of more than 40 years. The Army was fed up with the colonial wars and persuaded by the left-wing illegal parties, took control of the country. Democracy exists in Portugal, but corruption and widespread cleptocracy by a small number of elite families still rule. I hope Egypt avoids that.

Multiple selections are very cool. I think you have done a great job with this editor. A final question: what is the recommended way to move between recently visited files? For instance in Visual Studio there is a file history stack that makes it very easy to visit previous files with Alt + W + n where n represents the distance in the visitation history. I keep doing Alt + W + 2 to alternate back and forth between two files. Is there a way to this in Sublime?

I am thinking about buying it to use under OSX. The XCode editor is not my favourite to put it lightly.

Keep up great work!

Ah! So it's called column select. Oops! I am trying Alt+Left Mouse in Windows XP but it doesn't seem to work. Is it different under Windows?

Fast and slick. I like it. Does it support two dimensional copy & paste? ( this is usually done with pressing the left alt key on other editors ).
yalforreca··on The European startup ecosystem arrived
I left Lisbon around 7 years ago and moved to Barcelona for games programming gig. Moved to London 3 years ago and life has become less flexible so moving back to Lisbon is just a wish for now. But I do think about it a lot. The quality of life is just great. Miss the Ocean. I know some great people there if you need some references.

40K is around 2450 per month after tax. If you don't want to share a flat and don't want to spend more than 40 minutes commuting per trip allow around 1000 for a single bedroom flat in zone 2 or 3. Council tax is around 100/150 per month. Water/gas/electricity/internet should be between 150 and 200 per month. Monthly pass for zones 1 to 3 is 120 a month. So fixed costs are around 1500 a month. This leaves you 950 per month for food, clothes, gadgets going out, travelling and for saving some money. Healthcare is free for now.

Go to Portugal. Great weather with amazing beaches and country side, low cost of living and lot's of engineers that can speak fluent English. Also the government has subsidies for tech companies, specially in the IT sector. Spain is ok as well, but I find that people there have a hard time with English and like to party a bit too much. And the comments about London are true. It is very expensive to live here and the quality of life is appalling. Many people who start out in sexy industries ( games, web, etc... ) gravitate to finance because they can't afford to live an adult life here on the wages of those industries.
