yakto··on How I got into YC as a non-technical single founder
Hmmmm, I read it as it costs to be a winner, as in the faster rowers have a lower SAT score (presumably from training more than studying).
yakto··on My Latest Project - Share Music Instantly
Wow - really nice! Love the design.
yakto··on You are only cool if you own a brand
Spaces after periods are cool, too.
yakto··on Panabee.com - slick naming/branding tool
No connection to the service... just found it today. Super slick. Will nicely complement my arsenal of http://instantdomainsearch.com, http://morewords.com, and http://thesaurus.com.

Any other similar tools to know about?

yakto··on 2010 Apple letter saying it ships location data back to itself (warning: PDF)
Thanks, updated the title.
yakto··on Tragic Death of Bubbles in the Ghetto
Gotcha. No offense. I guess seeing several variations of anchor text pointing to the same urls set my spidey-sense off. Just my unsolicited opinion: it comes across as a little spammish, vs. a simple list of your your other stuff with one link per source. But if the seo gods are smiling on you, who am I to object. ;)
yakto··on Tragic Death of Bubbles in the Ghetto
Yo, what's the story with your "Information you might find handy (other sites I have worked on)" section at the bottom of your right column? You really worked on all that stuff? Honest question, because it looks like paid seo spam links to me.
yakto··on Hashify.me - store entire website content in the URL
Too bad IE gets unhappy after 2K (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/417142/what-is-the-maximu...)
yakto··on Denial of Science
It's been said in many ways by many authors, but this has helped me: "Imagine everyone is enlightened, except you. Then try to figure out what they were sent to teach you."
yakto··on Here's the Email That Could Cost Mark Zuckerberg Half of Facebook
Do you know how equity works?
yakto··on Show HN: Anonymous Mode, an experiment with anonymity on Facebook
Yeah, that's a bit of a disconnect all right, but a necessary one: without an active FB session, I can't wire up the necessary features like Search (of all FB's 600MM users) or showing you your friends list.

Rest assured that while you you do need to connect via FB, all your activity on the app is anonymous - as either "a friend" or "a stranger" of the user you're rating/commenting on.

yakto··on Show HN: Anonymous Mode, an experiment with anonymity on Facebook
Okay, I just removed a bunch of the perms asked for up front, because I really would like some feedback from some of you. Anyone?
yakto··on Show HN: Anonymous Mode, an experiment with anonymity on Facebook
I can see how the HN crowd would be amused, but for the target demo, I'm currently under the assumption that they don't really read/care about those extended perms too closely. Suppose I could cut a couple of them and stage them in later to engaged users, but I doubt if that's going to affect conversion significantly.

Note: if you cancel the login prompt, you can still browse around the site and see most of it.

yakto··on Show HN: Anonymous Mode, an experiment with anonymity on Facebook
Too many? My mom taught me I won't get anything if I don't ask for it. :)
yakto··on Show HN: Anonymous Mode, an experiment with anonymity on Facebook
Just launched today, built it over the last few weekends. Sorry for the fb login requirement, as I know HN isn't the target demo of this app. But I thought you all might appreciate an effort to get away from the never-anonymous aspects of Facebook.

Besides http://www.anonymousmode.com, you can also access the app at http://apps.facebook.com/anonymousmode

Would appreciate feedback, particularly on how long you think it will take FB to complain about how closely I've mimicked their UI. :)

yakto··on Whatever happened to Quora?
They're doing ok, probably just a mini-sharkfin from a wave of press. Interesting that HN is over half as big:

Forget job, do you want to co-found something? :)
yakto··on Show HN: LocalGo - bit.ly for addresses
There are quite a few .to domains available still. For example, right.to is available and would work for this application (although it's not terribly short). They're $50/yr, but you have to buy 2 years up front. I used it for Yak because it makes sense to yak.to/stanford, yak.to/chicago, etc.

yakto··on At least now we know why Color really got that funding
On March 4, they also registered "MULTI-LENS", Goods and Services, IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: computer application software for social networking services; computer application software to facilitate social networking services and access to news and media outlets by use of camera firmware in mobile devices; computer application software for sending, receiving, storing and organizing audiovisual, videographic and written data by use of camera firmware in mobile devices; computer application software to facilitate social networking services by use of location based data.

IC 045. US 100 101. G & S: online social networking services; providing a web site to facilitate social networking services by use of camera firmware and geolocation software in the mobile devices of others.

That's it for their trademarks, at least under the company name Jackson Labs, Inc. Which leads me to believe that's the only product they've currently got cooking.

yakto··on At least now we know why Color really got that funding
"TM" means nothing in the U.S - anyone can slap "TM" on any product and claim a "common law" trademark, and it'll be up to them to defend against complaints and suits.

A "circle R", on the other hand, means that you have a federally-registered trademark. Which, after a bit of research at USPTO.gov, it appears they have (no surprise):

There are 3 other live trademarks for "Color," in the categories of Hair Color, printed goods, and plastic display racks.

yakto··on Movie Studio As a Service (MSAAS) - Tech Co-Founder Wanted
My first recommendation as your pro-bono interim CTO: edit the meta description tag on http://cinecandy.com so it doesn't say "Capture email addresses with this coming soon template. Suitable for companies in a beta or pre-launch phase or anyone wanting to build an email list around an upcoming site or product/service," because that's what's showing up in the first result at http://www.google.com/search?q=cinecandy
yakto··on Groupon President and COO Rob Solomon Steps Down
Well, that settles it then. Nothing to see here, folks. Absolutely no chance that Rob was pushed. Wallabe (HN'er for 1 day) says so.

I've interviewed Rob. He's awesome. But he doesn't strike me as someone who voluntarily passes on a wild IPO ride, just because "he doesn't like Chicago anyway."

Would love to know the backstory here.

yakto··on PhantomJS - minimalistic headless WebKit
Yes. Either as screenshot images, or as full dom with readable text, even if text was js-written. That's the use-case that gets me hot-n-bothered, too.

Now if Google would use such a system for all their crawling, instead of forcing us ajax-app authors to implement their hackish hash-bang "solution." I'm guessing they would if they could, but the cpu cycles are just too expensive still.

Second this. NewRelic rocks. My company spends around $700/mo on it, happily.
yakto··on Show HN: Yak, my weekends project - invite code "hackernews"
Did you just call me stupid? :)

But seriously, thanks for the feedback. We're probably not going to go after the HN crowd with Yak... my hunch is college students aren't as impressed with minimalism as techies.
