yaitsyaboi··on Life as a public school teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2021
I think the 50% rule is okay. I get that it's annoying for the students who tried and got a 55%. But I suspect that the kids who would get score much less than a 50 are probably the least engaged and most disruptive.

If a 50 can keep them statistically in the game, with a chance of turning it around and passing, that might be worth it. It's similar logic to not giving life sentences. People with no hope of a good outcome are harder to deal with. A kid with a 22% average that you have to deal with for 12 more weeks must be a nightmare. They have no incentive to try at all, or to let the class proceed in an orderly wat.

Just curious: what kind of lifestyle does 100k USD get you in Colombia?
yaitsyaboi··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
The article actually addresses this in the final sentence:

“Nearly half of prime age men who are not in the labor force take pain medication on any given day; and in nearly two-thirds of these cases, they take prescription pain medication.”

I think more prominent than the soybeans/BPA/microplastics kind of causes is just plain old opioid dependence.

As a person who is in this age range and in essentially the opposite position--my disabled mother and college age sister live with me in coastal California--the kind of thing you're describing with the guy who wouldn't come out of the room is bonkers. I know this kind of person exists as an archetype but between your anecdote and the article I'm just baffled at the apparent prevalence.

I guess part of it is the fact that my circumstances didn't even make that lifestyle an option. By my late teen years it was increasingly obvious that I had to go in the kind of direction I did if I wanted my family to have a decent life. If I had a middle class nuclear family, is it likely that I would've tore through CS classes and leetcode as much as I did? I kinda doubt it.

I doubt FB could replicate this. Fb itself is a non-starter the people who use this app haven't been on Fb in years. Okay, so Instagram. If they could, they would’ve.

I think there are problems with making Instagram seem tacky by clobbering on a marketplace. It would make it look cheap and shilly. Right now it’s the most rarified space to share pictures of your awesome lifestyle. I think you can either have that very cool, chic vibe or the amazon marketplace vibe.

I think that despite their enormous resources, there are places that brands can’t go.

yaitsyaboi··on Amazon has a quota for the number of employees it would be happy to see leave
Well for one, they can probably get you pretty close to if not over 500k if you’re senior. I also think Amazon and FB stand out for that kind of mean spirited meat grinder vibe. Netflix doesn’t screw around with any of it and lets you go without the fuss, but my understanding is that you get a lot of signals from your manager and they aren’t about doing weird psychological tricks to push you harder. It’s just a matter of meeting a reasonable productivity bar. Google is very far from this and a nice relaxed place to work.

yaitsyaboi··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
The pirates didn't start the practice of abusing lawlessness. After the civil war and the breakdown of the state, fishermen from other countries would illegally trawl the waters off the Somali coast and industrial waste was being dumped by foreign opportunists. Just one instance involved 600 drums of radioactive waste from Europe and the US. This exacerbated the problem by reducing the fish supply further.

Eventually, this led to violent clashes where Somali fishermen would take over ships in the area illegally for ransom. This quickly became the piracy industry as we know it.

yaitsyaboi··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
As a person whose family is from East Africa, saying that you would literally live in Somalia over the Bay Area is really goofy.

There's a GDP per capita of ~250 bucks, the 4th lowest in the world. Even if you lived in some western enclave of Mogadishu, your quality of life would be so much lower that it's incomprehensible. You think the poop in the streets in the Bay Area is annoying? In Somalia 1/3 of people have to defecate in the open. 50% of people don't have access to a basic water supply. The government is still trying to contain Al-Shabab--bombings and skirmishes still happen. As a westerner, especially if you're white, you'd live in constant risk of being kidnapped for ransom.

I don't like the bay area either, but at least keep the criticism tethered to reality. Somalia isn't Syria or Venezuela, you probably wouldn't be murdered but it would be a very dangerous situation.

No, America is listed 27th in the world as far as economic mobility, behind most other highly industrialized, democratic countries.

As someone who has gone from the bottom to top quintile, I think this is a very interesting and sad aspect of American life. Especially how it is perceived vs the reality.

yaitsyaboi··on The most prized degree in India became the most worthless
But the article is describing the opposite phenomenon, it seems that in India only students from their Stanfords and MITs are qualified for and get the jobs.
yaitsyaboi··on I was tricked into thinking I had “grit”
I don't think that stands to reason at all. That sounds laughable, especially in the context of the heinous things American society did to purposefully black families from "achieving their potential". While immigrant families' ancestors were in their home countries accruing assets, educational opportunities, and (relatively more) equal access to what their country had to offer, black people here were held back from their white peers. Home equity, educational opportunities, freedom from police harassment, the ability to organize politically without facing literal terrorism.
yaitsyaboi··on I was tricked into thinking I had “grit”
That sounds like a very mid 20th century POV. Which I totally get for Buffett.

Most rankings of social mobility put the US outside the top 20. The highs are higher here, but the path to get there, especially from the bottom 10%, is more difficult than almost any country we consider a peer.

Wait, is this real? It seems deeply weird to me. I think they have a carve out for plasma, but surely selling your literal blood is illegal? If not, why can't people sell organs? I think this just introduces a sort of inequality that even American society can't stomach.
