y_tho··on Father-son duo helped techies ‘hack exams’, earn top scores for big payday
Did he turned out to be good for the job/faked it ´til he made it or did it all come crushing down?
y_tho··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
Receiving bribes, soliciting bribes or declining bribes?
y_tho··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
But do you like the product?

If coca-cola did some re-organization I didn´t like or spent money like a mad person on ridiculous products, I´d still buy coke until the company went broke.

y_tho··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
Not sure I understand. You disagree with the way the company/organization is being run so much, so you stopped using their free product? Do you still like the actual browser?
y_tho··on Moved a server from one building to another with zero downtime
It´s 2008. A manager that just doesn´t care anymore tells the new IT person to replenish the fan mayo.

-"Why? I don´t know why. It just works."

-"Is Hellmann's ok?"

IT person documents that Hellmann's is preferred.

y_tho··on Mozilla Wants Young People to Consider ‘Ethical Issues’ Before Taking Tech Jobs
And the can punt it down to the next generation. Problem solved.
y_tho··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
I´ll get my duffel bag. Hope I don´t bump into anyone already in their seat.
y_tho··on Go master Lee Se-dol says he quits, unable to win over AI Go players
That's like when the whole class fails a test, but the prof. grades on a curve. Someone gets an A, but not really. edit: some grammar.
y_tho··on TikTok hits 1.5B downloads, outperforming Instagram
They are there because they have insight into a phenomenon they have studied and is being discussed, and they may have a book or something that further explains what they are talking about should the listener be interested. Should they not mention or promote their work?
y_tho··on On-Line Pizza Idea Is Clever but Only Half-Baked (1994)
"Hey reporter, check this out. Order pizza online."

"Yes, but why isn't it doing what I think it should be doing!?"

y_tho··on On-Line Pizza Idea Is Clever but Only Half-Baked (1994)
Cucumbers on a pizza. What madness.
y_tho··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
> There's a difference between having Asperger's and being an asshole.

Someone may be rude because they're aspie or because they're assholes, but the end result is the same: dealing with rudeness. I rather not.

y_tho··on Show HN: SponsorBlock – Skip sponsorship segments of YouTube videos
Do you also sit through commercials on tv?, or read the advertisements on the paper/magazines? How do you feel about pop-ups? All of those will have good production values and help pay the bills.

There are a couple of people that might do something interesting or funny with their sponsored segments, but plenty are just "hey guys, let me tell you about this toothbrush".

y_tho··on The IT Guy vs. the Con Artist
I was not bothered by the interjections in the Planet Money story, but I am by the ones in RadioLab. I think it´s because in PM it sounds like friendly banter, but in RL every interruption is like it´s made to be thought of as a [pause for dramatic effect] revelation.
y_tho··on The Rise of Coffee Shaming
How does it affect you?
y_tho··on Renault's driver UX is a disaster waiting to happen
> I wish they'd make simpler cars. With physical knobs that have proper tactile feedback.

They do, they're just entry level, basic everything, fancy nothing. You get from A to B and that's pretty much it. Some may lack even a radio or a/c.

y_tho··on One of the Biggest At-Home DNA Testing Companies Is Working with the FBI
Replace murder with art heist: http://content.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1887111,00... With a "happier" ending.
y_tho··on Road Tripping Around Europe in a Tesla Is Less Fun Than You’d Think
what happens if I put in $5 and my car only uses $3 of electricity? Automated change has been a thing for ages, see: vending machines, public phones. Or if someone pulls out the charge cable after my car's only taken $1 of electricity? Mind your property.
y_tho··on I Can Be the Bank: Individual Investors Buy Busted Mortgages
"Are you willing to kick someone out of their home?"

Yes. A tennent's inability to fulfill a contract, even through no fault of their own, will cause me the inability to fulfill contracts* of my own, through fall of my own.

*My bills, my rent, my mortgage, etc.

y_tho··on Operation Luigi: How I hacked my friend without her noticing (2017)
A joke here and there is fine, but this person injects his jokes attempts pretty much every sentence. That gets annoying quickly.
y_tho··on Why Pencils Are Yellow (2017)
It's not a fake question, it's question your assertion (which comes with no citation) regarding the origin of the colour yellow used in pencils, which contradicts the origin story described in the article.
y_tho··on Facebook exodus: Nearly half of young users have deleted the app
> I'm known to ALL of my friends and ALL of my family as someone who will not ever be on Facebook. You know what they do? They call me. Or text me. Or email me.

That only works if they already know you. If you wanna start something new, it might benefit from having the outreach that facebook has.

y_tho··on How America lost its love for the stick shift
> This is totally anecdotal but to me it seems like the stick keeps me more engaged with what's happening with the car so I find I tend to be less distracted.

Doesn't that go against the adage that after a week shifting becomes muscle memory or is there something else?

y_tho··on In Germany, the use of cash has become a proxy for concerns about trust, privacy
>Protection from what exactly? Insurance for my groceries?

https://www.google.com/search?q=credit+card+price+match

Beyond that, making a purchase of an electronic device with a credit card can extend your warranty.

Don't know if that applies to Germany, it may apply to where ever the person you are replying lives.

y_tho··on Big tech products are mostly useless
Now the companies are gonna have to dial 0 for a human.

(Imagine a shopkeeper with a thick scottish accent). "We've got an opening for 4pm wednesday." "I'm sorry, I could not understand you. Please repeat that."

y_tho··on Don’t Do for Money What Others Do for Love
But not programming. Maybe they need a pastry chef?
y_tho··on All of Oculus’s Rift headsets have stopped working due to an expired certificate
Wouldn't be the first time in the industry: https://twitter.com/JanHenrikH/status/910754596422868992/pho...
y_tho··on Tiny, weird online communities made a comeback in 2017
I would say your analogy applies, but in a different way: walmart and home depot arrived and mom&pop hardware and general stores didn't all disappear, but their numbers did diminish. Where 8 minimarkets were open, half may have closed (YMMV).
y_tho··on If macOS High Sierra shows your password instead of the password hint
> could be signs of bad RAM

Well, they can just open it up and cha-... I hope it's an older model.
