y0ungarmanii··on How Does an FPGA Work?
I saw various comments about how FPGAs are not ready for consumer hardware, apple is using them in the airpod max already (probably for filtering audio)

Check the link below https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPods+Max+Teardown/139369

They really excel for high throughput & low latency - which noise canceling sounds like a good example of! In addition to this, they are already being used in communication systems & data centers to speed up latency sensitive computations. Edge AI seems like a big market that they will be used for soon, probably more likely b/c they can be flashed unlike ASICs and new NN architectures drop every couple of years.

They do if they get into high frequency trading :(
y0ungarmanii··on Learning algebra in my 60s
Math is so much easier when your using it to model something that is real. I remember in Physics 1 in college when the professor was going over how a baseball hits a bat and how it is modeled with all of its nth order derivatives. Everything clicked! Not to say theoretical math isn't fun though!
y0ungarmanii··on I 10x'd a TI-84 emulator's speed by replacing a switch-case
Reminds me of when Terry Davis taught me that switch statements are just lookup tables and b/c of that more efficient. RIP to the king!

Lol colleges are more expensive country club than place of higher education. We really shouldn't be surprised with the corruption anymore after we found out how easy it was to get on the rowing team of most of these places.
y0ungarmanii··on Homebrew Computers Web-Ring
One of the projects I keep putting off is creating a simple RISC based CPU on an FPGA and writing an assembler & compiler for it. It would probably serve no real purpose other than education for myself which is why I put it off...
y0ungarmanii··on I should have loved biology
Funny enough my only bad grades in high school were with languages, I think your analogy is apt. I could understand bio and learn it but performing at the level needed to be a doctor was not going to happen. Although, I have no regrets very happy with where I ended up!
y0ungarmanii··on I should have loved biology
I originally went into premed in college and struggled a lot, I had other family members who were premed & or doctors and didn't understand how I could be getting C's in biochem or physiology.

I finally gave up realizing there was no chance i was getting into medical school with bad GPA and switched to EE where I admittedly had to study a lot less and got much better grades. People underestimate just how difficult bio is and i think the high volume of information and importance of memorization is just training you for medical school where the volume of material you need to study is magnitudes more.

I don't envy anyone who went through it. When it came to physics, math, circuits, etc. you could really get away with just doing a couple practice problems and understanding the core concepts. The experience of going through two very different fields and being an utter failure in one made me believe that people's brains can just be wired differently.

y0ungarmanii··on US military's mysterious X-37B space plane zooms toward orbital record
I mean they don't pay that bad unless its entry level. Senior & principle engineers can make over 150k and thats a pretty good salary everywhere besides San Francisco and most of them are in LCOL areas.
y0ungarmanii··on US military's mysterious X-37B space plane zooms toward orbital record
Very true, the commercial sector has almost no need for things like advanced optics, radiation hard electronics, RF absorbing materials etc.
y0ungarmanii··on US military's mysterious X-37B space plane zooms toward orbital record
Big reason why this is advanced also was no one other than the military ever had a need for this kind of tech. Sometimes private sector is more advanced like when it comes to silicon fabrication, but those advancements will usually get incorporated very quickly if they are applicable.
y0ungarmanii··on US military's mysterious X-37B space plane zooms toward orbital record
Lol without outting myself i worked in defense and although it could be mind numbingly slow we deff have tech at least a decade more advance than commercial sector. Mainly for the fact that there isn't a commercial market yet for the advanced stuff yet.
