y-c-o-m-b··on Device detection and occupancy monitoring for Airbnb hosts
Indeed. I live in a wealthy suburb in Oregon in the U.S., but my specific neighborhood is fairly middle class starter homes. It's nestled in an ordinarily very quiet and extremely safe place.

The next street over from me is an affordable housing duplex complex. I think about 20-30 duplexes total which house families with children. This is not a college town nor does it have anything within walking distance that would make it attract the busy-life. Several of these duplexes recently vacated their tenants and remodeled to charge more rent. The rent increase was too much and they sat empty for some time. The owners then put it up for sale and it was subsequently bought up by AirBnB investors.

This has brought a litany of issues. We've had several instances now of huge house parties where they rent all of the duplexes at once, and this has brought large police encounters. There's been property damage and violence against neighbors as a result of these parties. The commotion is not contained unfortunately and bleeds out into the neighboring streets, including my residence. We're talking probably a good 500ft radius from the actual AirBnB homes to the surrounding neighborhood. That's a large blast radius for those of us that never agreed to have this sort of presence so close to our homes. I feel awful for the homes in the actual complex, is they are getting the brunt of the disruption.

The last time I finally had it and collected video evidence then reported them to AirBnb citing the violence, property damage, and police reports. AirBnb was surprisingly responsive and so far it's been a couple of months without any issues - knock on wood. However my anger at the displacement of low income families in place of AirBnb homes remains. They have zero investment in the well-being of our neighborhood and only care about turning a profit on the homes. It frustrates me to no end.

y-c-o-m-b··on PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock

I'm seeing "average" people adopt piracy at astonishing levels because of these decisions. I went over to a friend's house the other day and his relative sent him one of those Android TV devices with access to all the pirated content you could ever want. I would never have imagined him to be ok with it. This has been happening in my social circle at an accelerating rate. People that would have scolded me for doing the same 10 years ago are now doing it.
y-c-o-m-b··on Noodle Gallery – Self-hosted photo and video manager forked from Immich
My only issue with Immich is the partner sharing and face recognition overhead per account. It is a massive oversight. Looks like Noodle Gallery explicitly solves this (and more). I'm sold.

EDIT: hmm after reviewing the repo, I'm going to wait a bit to see how this works out. There's a difference between LLM-assisted software development and blindly vibe-coding things without review and this seems a bit like the latter. I see no contributors and hundreds of commits in a very short amount of time. That's a red flag for now.

y-c-o-m-b··on The AI job market in 2026
These lists must be hallucinating.

> AI Engineer. Number one on LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise in the US two years running, number one at Robert Half. About 1,550 new US postings a week, median 176,000 dollars. This is the engineer who puts LLMs into products: RAG, agents, fine-tuning, evaluation.

I'm doing all those things. The RAG work was interesting, but putting it on my resume has done nothing. Nobody is hiring. I have recent multi-year FAANG experience too. Before 2023 I could blast out 10 resumes and get at least 8 or so hits with multiple offers. Now I can send out 100 resumes and lucky if I get a single rejection letter. I am seeing the same thing reported by other white-collar working people like HR reps and project managers in all industries. There is definitely a stealth recession/depression scenario playing out right now and has been for at least the last two years.

Yeah I've been at that stage since Opus 4.6 pretty much. There's still a lot of back and forth in the conversation on complex tasks, but I have not written any code. We are working on a MASSIVE project for our multi-billion dollar client and the whole team is completely using AI. Even the UX guys and our project managers are making the prototypes they want us to implement by vibe coding it first in a static app. I haven't seen Figma usage in months.

I've been around these execs outside of professional settings. All they care about is their status (money) and getting blowjobs from their aides. I am not exaggerating. They do not give a damn about how software should work. The execs with humble beginnings often get sucked into the culture and eventually exhibit the same characteristics as the others within 5-10 years. As they say, dopamine is a hell of a drug.

> It is not in their interest to save the federal government, US dollar, or the economy.

I think "save" is not even in the room with us; they seem to be actively harming every industry: farming, food, oil, electronics, manufacturing, healthcare, etc. It's a full on assault.

y-c-o-m-b··on Cheap GPS jammers are filling the world with navigation dead zones
I encountered this two weeks ago on the Springwater Corridor along the river in Portland, OR. There were families out just trying to walk/bike/enjoy nature and every minute or so an idiot blasting music at the highest volume would go by, disrupting the whole experience. The first two I didn't mind, but after that it got very annoying.

I can't help but think it's intentionally deviant behavior, because any semi-ordinary person would at minimum reduce the volume to a reasonable level. But no, these folks have it dialed to the max, they want everyone within a 100 yard radius to know their shitty taste in music.

y-c-o-m-b··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
> What "high"? Our brain chemistry literally works differently than neurotypical people and the stimulants don't get us high. In fact they often have a calming effect.

Is this actually true? I see this repeated a lot. The one time I increased dosage of Adderall too quickly, I felt very calm and almost "normal" again, but I attributed this to a mild euphoria because euphoria is technically the effect one gets when high on these drugs. When I see people repeat what you said, I begin to question if that was just the drug working as intended. Sadly I ended up having to get off the drug shortly after this because A) I got too spooked about how nice it was and didn't want to chase this feeling and B) I noticed the "crash" phase resulted in deep suicidal ideation.

y-c-o-m-b··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
Not OP, but my primary side effect being on Sertraline from 2002-2012 was lack of control over my anger or violent outbursts. I was primarily ok if things were good, but if something upset me, it would go from 0 to 10 in an instant. I did not even notice this as unusual until I got off the drug and it was a night and day difference how much more mellow I became. I have not been on any SSRI since then.

I was on a very low dose of Bupropion for about 5 years and did mostly well; it only made my existing brain fog slightly worse. I usually recommend that one over SSRIs due to my experiences.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the damn brain zaps on SSRIs. Even if I missed a dose by 18 hours, I would get the zaps.

y-c-o-m-b··on Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account
Makes one miss the days when Craigslist or Monster (and its clones) were legitimately the best places to find employment.

I've always loathed LinkedIn due to their poor security and their data mining practices, starting from day 1. I haven't used LinkedIn in over 10 years and only used it briefly to connect with old colleagues. I never had a problem getting work without it. Due to AI, scammers, and infiltration by countries like North Korea, LinkedIn seems to be the only other source outside of "networking" to get hired these days though, unfortunately.

At this point nothing would make me happier than to see Meta, X, LinkedIn, and their friends collapse. They are a cancer and only amplify the enshittification of everything.

y-c-o-m-b··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I got this in my rules:

- Be concise and readable — use line breaks, avoid verbosity.

- I don't need conversation from you. End summaries with a short tl;dr of what you fixed in a bulleted list and any outstanding items as another bulleted list, in this order. Omit all other verbose details

It has definitely improved things, but I have to fully agree with all your points because I still occasionally get gigantic tables and stuff when I never asked for it. Makes it even more frustrating when I want to scroll up to read previous prompts in the session, because now I have to sift through all this garbage.

EDIT: I used Claude to modify its own rules, and now it's much much cleaner in case anyone else wants to use it:

I don't need conversation from you. When reporting finished work, the *entire* response is these two sections and nothing else:

```
TL;DR
- <what changed — one line each>
Outstanding:
- <unresolved, blocked, or needs my input>
```

- Drop `Outstanding` when nothing is outstanding. Never drop `TL;DR`.

- One line per bullet, naming the thing that changed. No sub-bullets, no reasoning, no restating my request.

- Never include: tables, before/after comparisons, headings, diffs, file excerpts, a walkthrough of what you inspected, or a closing offer to do more. The only permitted code block is a command I need to run.

- If something needs explaining to be usable, it is an `Outstanding` bullet, not a paragraph.

- Answer direct questions directly — no `TL;DR` wrapper, and none of the padding above.

- After delivering a solution, re-read these rules and verify none were skipped.

y-c-o-m-b··on Caffeine and Cardiovascular Disease: AHA Scientific Statement
Interesting to see dehydration on there. I never even thought of that as a possible trigger. It's good to see this is specifically looking at Paroxysmal AFIB patients as that's what I fall under. Mine is very mild and self-corrects within hours to a few days.

Biggest triggers are caffeine, alcohol, and sleep deprivation (correlated with my sleep apnea events) for me. I see exercise is only reported as being slightly higher than caffeine here, but exercise (stationary bike, strength training) usually causes my episodes to self-correct; I usually attribute this to the more controlled breathing during exercise, but I have no proof. I also seem to have a much larger threshold of triggering AFIB with alcohol than I do coffee. I have to reach the moderately drunk stage to induce a flare with alcohol. If I keep things near a light-buzz, I can typically get away with no issues.

y-c-o-m-b··on Caffeine and Cardiovascular Disease: AHA Scientific Statement
> Randomized controlled trial data among regular caffeinated coffee drinkers showed that caffeinated coffee decreases the risk of atrial fibrillation occurrence but increases the frequency of premature ventricular contractions

That is interesting because caffeine as low as ~80mg is one of my triggers for AFIB and arrhythmia and absolutely wrecks me within 15 minutes of consumption. I was not a regular coffee drinker though, so maybe the "regular drinkers" bit in that statement is the significant factor here.

y-c-o-m-b··on $100 AI Music Video: Claude Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol
I think this has more to do with the cutthroat business than the technology involved. It seems the tech has improved, but the quality has suffered due to pressure to just fling shit out the door using the least amount of money to generate the most amount of profit. They are squeezing every penny dry. It seems to me the person you're responding to still has a valid point.
y-c-o-m-b··on How Kalshi Infects the News
> The thesis is that as people become increasingly desperate to have enough money (and espeically if they fall below that level) then gambling increases because people see this as the only way they can get ahead

I have plenty of cash (let's just say over a half-mil), so well ahead of the poverty level. I find myself nearly falling into this trap often. I used to work in FAANG as a developer making big bucks and earning far more than I spend. I left FAANG a couple of years ago and now I feel like I'm just breaking even with the lower salary. Quality of life has improved, but I miss having that "cushion" in each paycheck, so I look to things like the stock market to determine if I can get ahead again somehow. The fact that the tech market is absolute trash right now makes me fear for my future which in turn drives this "gotta find a way to get ahead" line of thinking even more aggressively. It's definitely not just impacting the poor.

I believe we've already crossed the quality threshold for being equal to or "better" (subjective) than human.

For EDM, check out the AI artist "Vibfy". Especially the song "I Hear You" as it has the best mastering so far. The melody and vocals of all the songs are fire, but in some of the earlier songs the mastering is sub-par with strange volume changes and muddy beats.

There is an AI folk band called "We're all f*cked" that is incredibly good and indistinguishable from actual humans.

y-c-o-m-b··on A forgotten social media post may hold key clues to Covid-19's origin
My child and mother both got super sick like this in March 2019 also, so naturally my wife and mother both think it was early covid. What makes me doubt this is the fact that when Italy and NYC got hit in 2020, there was a HUGE jump in deaths. They couldn't keep up with the bodies. If this thing was circulating earlier than 2020, we surely would've seen the Italy/NYC pattern very quickly. I think the 2019 flu virus or RSV strains were perhaps a very harsh one and that's what people are mistakenly believing was "early covid".

y-c-o-m-b··on Volkswagen started blocking GrapheneOS users
> Volkswagen brands were at the top of my list for many reasons

You should definitely reevaluate how you constructed your list. VW has a history of being scummy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_emissions_scandal) and their ICE cars are notorious for being unreliable compared to the Japanese car-makers. To be fair, EVs do change the equation a bit, but given their scandal plagued past, there's no way I would put them at the top of any list.

y-c-o-m-b··on Want your images back? That'll be $5
I've been using it for about 6 months now and I'm mostly happy with it, but there are definitely some pain points. Depending on individual use-case, it can be a bit tricky to get setup.

I dislike Docker Desktop for Windows, so I run it in a docker container on Windows Subsystem for Linux with Tailscale and have configured it to automatically initialize all of it when my PC is powered on. It took me many hours and lots of chatting with GPT to get it working. Perhaps my configuration is uncommon though.

My biggest issue with it is the overhead and lack of smart configuration. For example my wife and I have the same mobile device (Android) and we can't share an account while having backups made at the same time because backups mimic the default android images folders and both devices have the same structure. If we have two different accounts, then each account generates its own thumbnails and you have to run facial recognition on each one individually (which required a lot of manual tagging). This wastes a lot of time and space.

The second problem is it can't just work with the file system structure and organization I have in my external folders "as-is". You basically have to recreate them as albums inside immich yourself. I found a handy script that did this for me, but the experience is somewhat lacking.

Third issue is I can't backup to external folders. Backups go to the default immich folder and I have to manually pull them out of these and dump them in the correct external folders (recall that I have my own file structure).

I've gone to their github and luckily there are issues out on all of these which I promptly upvoted, but I'm not sure any of them have been resolved by the team yet. I'm hoping they get fixed soon.

Edit: I should mention that I don't enjoy having a bunch of different services running to get this working like an out-of-the-box experience should. For example adding Dropbox to the equation is a no-go for me. The idea of adding even more system resources dedicated to this function is a huge turn off. I also use a cheap DAS (not a NAS - and yes I do manual backups for offsite storage) because I don't want to fork out a fortune for the Synology solution. These are all things that Immich itself should be able to handle without having these complex systems with multiple failure points.
