xyzzy4··on How we secretly introduced Haskell and got away with it
Haskell is a bad language, in my opinion, because you can't tell what the O(n) run-time is for any operation. Instead you just have to "trust" that it'll be fast enough.

More on this: https://www.reddit.com/r/haskell/comments/1f48dc/what_does_t...

All of the answers seem insufficient. Basically you can't estimate Haskell run-time unless you are very familiar with the internal Haskell engine.

xyzzy4··on Renting a Dog
Sorry, my bad. For some reason I thought these were loans and not actually renting.

If one party has to make monthly payments, then what else do they think it is? And how can adults in this world not understand how interest rates work.

In feudalistic society there were hundreds of small "governments" in a society, all of which had to defend their own rights.

Reminds me of when I used to work at Cisco. All the software there for routers must be written in C. As a result everything takes much longer than it should.

Why do you want to sit near other people? Then they can see what time you come in or leave the office.
xyzzy4··on What makes the perfect office?
I'm going to mount an umbrella in a few days to block the overhead lighting. I requested that the lighting be turned off, and it was, but another employee (who only comes to the office once per week) had it turned back on a few days later.
xyzzy4··on What makes the perfect office?
It makes me feel like the sun is shining on my face, and I want to seek shelter.
xyzzy4··on What makes the perfect office?
Having your back to the wall and no overhead lights.

Or maybe it's to produce as much CO2 as possible.
xyzzy4··on How Hibernate Almost Ruined My Career
SQL is an amazing and very useful tool to work with. I will never understand why people want to abstract it away.
xyzzy4··on India has banned disposable plastic in Delhi
Plastic is the least of Delhi's problems. First they should be banning vehicles that don't meet emission standards. I visited there twice and I'll be lucky if I don't come down with some lung problem.

Edit: They should ban the burning of plastic, not plastic itself. And enforce it.

They're potentially able to profit from it, but they feel the need to have thousands of employees.
xyzzy4··on Ask HN: How many coffee do you need per day to get your work done?
I stopped drinking coffee because it was making me feel too anxious. I also stopped caring about my total productivity per day for the same reason. Instead I make sure I just do something per day.
xyzzy4··on Two of China's Biggest Exchanges Stop Bitcoin Withdrawals
If the price collapses then the cost of electricity will be greater than the mining rate
xyzzy4··on I am going to eradicate the inbound Windows Support scam
If you've been to India, you'd see it's much closer to anarchy than the US. There's almost no respect for the law. Car drivers don't even pull over to the side of a road to let cop cars with flashing lights go by. At train stations people sell fake tickets from scam booths, and can do so for months or years because they bribe the police or are ignored.
