xyzal··on Show HN: I miss Google Inbox and built a replacement
Unfortunately, does not work with third party cookies disabled.
xyzal··on Google Chrome has become surveillance software. It’s time to switch
I am quite satisfied with Firefox's Multi-Account containers. As an added bonus, tabs associated with different containers can share the same Firefox window.
xyzal··on Death by algorithm: the age of killer robots is closer than you think
Reminds me of the somewhat famous Slaughterbots video from the Stop Autonomous Weapons initiative: https://youtu.be/9CO6M2HsoIA
xyzal··on The Hedonic Treadmill
Funny. In my college days, one evening after a one too many drinks, my pals and me formulated what we called "Theory of constant happiness", and its core postulate was that perceived happiness was not proportional to satiation of individual needs, but to the derivation of such satiation in time. It was of course promptly forgotten.

It is nice to see there was a grain of truth in our theory.

xyzal··on A restaurant owner who asked for 1-star Yelp reviews
This is genius tactic, and should become a coordinated movement.
xyzal··on Ivan Golunov, an investigative reporter at Meduza, has been arrested in Moscow
"Doctor treating @meduzaproject ’s Ivan Golunov says he may have broken ribs, a concussion and a hematoma. All likely sustained while he was in custody. Police won’t allow him to be hospitalized or have an X-ray."

That's just abhorrent.

xyzal··on WeChat and the Surveillance State
This maybe implies a use case where deepfakes could actually used be to the benefit of society.
xyzal··on The low-down on home routers – how to buy, what to avoid
I use this router: https://www.turris.cz/en/omnia/ and I am quite pleased with it.
xyzal··on Google AMP lowered our page speed, and there's no choice but to use it
A reminder to all AMP-haters like me: When using Firefox mobile, Google search results become free of AMP crap.

Also, you get the added benefit of a browser whose maker has no interest in tracking your every move.

xyzal··on Ask HN: What made you change your mind about a programming language/paradigm?
May I ask what was the book? Do you recommend it?
xyzal··on Show HN: Explore Random Web Servers
Found some home routers with default credentials. Will people never learn?
xyzal··on Troubled legacy of Terry Davis, ‘God’s lonely programmer’
His OS seems like a curious endeavour: http://www.codersnotes.com/notes/a-constructive-look-at-temp...
xyzal··on Android vendors, don’t kill my app
To be honest, as a user I really like the implementation of battery saving features of my Sony phone:

1. They are not enabled by default

2. Their settings screen explicitly states what the modes do

3. They can extend battery life significantly

The most aggressive mode is called Ultra Stamina, and it works by basically turning the phone into dumbphone mode -- complete without any internet connectivity, calls, SMS and alarm clock only -- and the phone has no problem lasting a week.

I use these modes extensively when going backpacking for several days, as I do not have to carry any power banks, which saves precious gramms :)

edit: punctuation, grammar

xyzal··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
An advantage to using Firefox Mobile is google search results suddenly become free of AMP crap
xyzal··on A study on the willful regulation of autonomic function during cold exposure
Perhaps somewhat related anecdata: I have been successfully using autogenic training ( which basically is training of conscious moderation of the fight/flight autonomous response ) to soften symptoms of my anxiety disorder. So I can confirm that such a seemingly automatic bodily response can be 'overridden' with practice.
xyzal··on As Chinese investment pours into the EU, the Europeans are beginning to worry
Please keep in mind he is just an old grumpy man who is slowly losing his facilities. i.e. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-44494476
xyzal··on As Chinese investment pours into the EU, the Europeans are beginning to worry
As a Czech citizen I only regret the bases were not built a few hundered kilometers more to the east. Forty years under Russian influence were devastating to my country.
xyzal··on A new insomnia therapy
I cannot recommend Sleepio enough everytime someone mentions sleep trouble. The time-in-bed restriction regimen is in my opinion particularily helpful and I revert to it occasionally when I don't sleep well a few nights in a row with good results.
xyzal··on In Kenya, “sugar” relationships have become both more common and more visible
This was one of the few articles where I appreciated Firefox's Reader View.
xyzal··on A CLI game to learn Vim
Vimtutor did not work for me, but vim adventures taught me enough to be comfortable using vim on a daily basis. I think it may be because vimtutor focuses on one topic at a time, while vim adventures forces you to use everything you learned up to a point, so it is more of a spaced repetition approach.
