xyzal··on The cult of the free must die
I am SO waiting for Mozilla to give my ANY endpoint to throw my money at, and I bet I am not alone. Why cannot I have an Firefox mug? Or get that VPN running in Europe finally?
xyzal··on GNU: A Heuristic for Bad Cryptography
One of the linked articles references Magic Wormhole, which appears to be just the file transfer tool I have been missing all the recent years.

xyzal··on The Secret Algorithm That's Keeping Students Out of College
I understood it so as well. It seems to be the most horrible application of machine learning I have heard of lately.
xyzal··on If It’s Not “Cancel Culture,” What Kind of Culture Is It?
I opine that "accountability culture" is becoming quite hyperthrophied, and support my opinion with an excerpt from Taibbi`s other article:

"A bizarre echo of North Korea’s “three generations of punishment” doctrine could be seen in the boycotts of Holy Land grocery, a well-known hummus maker in Minneapolis. In recent weeks it’s been abandoned by clients and seen its lease pulled because of racist tweets made by the CEO’s 14 year-old daughter eight years ago."

xyzal··on If It’s Not “Cancel Culture,” What Kind of Culture Is It?
This post from Taibbi is in my opinion also worth a read:

xyzal··on [dead]
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

xyzal··on Reddit's website uses DRM for fingerprinting
I suspect the redesign was motivated to make ads look more like regular content. At least I seem to click ads looking like regular posts frequently since the redesign, and in my opinion, it is an underhanded tactic.
xyzal··on I Got My Attention Back (2017)
How about removing Slack from your phone and using only the web interface while in the office?
xyzal··on Show HN: Bash Script to change Master branch to Main
While we are at it, we could also eliminate unix zombie and orphan processes, and genocide in the form of killing all children should also be forbidden.
xyzal··on Ask HN: What kind of math do you study in your free time?
Bartosz Milewski's lectures on category theory are great. Also, the accompanying book is well written (and free)!

xyzal··on Do I need to go to university?
In case you are thinking twice about getting a degree due to education costs, please take note that many European public universities offer free education even for foreigners.
xyzal··on The Interruptible Programmer (2010)
Oh my, I empathize a lot with the author. In january, long periods of sitting brought me a slip of the L5-S1 disc, and now I have to exercise every hour or so in the office for several minutes to be able to walk home with manageable amounts of pain at the end of the day.

It takes a surprising amount of willpower to stick to the exercise schedule. Call of the zone is alluring.

In case anyone here is in a similar situation and has any tips, please share ...

xyzal··on The Most Damaging Tweet Ever
I find the joke actually hilarious. While being funny in a Ricky Gervais way, it is critical of stereotypical thinking at the same time.
xyzal··on Zotero: Personal Research Assistant
It should be noted that Mendeley encrypts user database, presumably to lock in its users: https://eighty-twenty.org/2018/06/13/mendeley-encrypted-db
xyzal··on Dwarf Fortress: An actual look at graphical improvements
In case you dislike Steam, take note Dwarf Fortress Premium is also available at Itch: https://kitfoxgames.itch.io/dwarf-fortress
xyzal··on Google tracking a bike ride past a burglarized home made the rider a suspect
This is IMO part of the problem with common law: the judge rarely inquires into matters before them, instead relying on arguments presented by lawyers, so the party which can afford better lawyers tends to win.

In continental law, judges role is more like an investigator; his/hers role is to establish the facts of the case and to apply the provisions of the code. They are the ones questioning witnesses.

xyzal··on Google tracking a bike ride past a burglarized home made the rider a suspect
As an Eastern European with some experience with autocratic government I quite look up to the U.S. as to a champion of democratic culture, but among two major things that baffle me (healthcare being the other) is why there is such a high cost associated with litigation even for the innocent party. In continental Europe, the "loser pays" principle seems to hold quite well, while also having the benefit of discouraging people from frivolous lawsuits.
xyzal··on Show HN: Machine Wisdom – Generated Inspiration from Deep Learning (GPT-2)
Looks like Deepak Chopra will be out of a job soon. Good work!
xyzal··on Show HN: Creepyface – A JavaScript library to make your face look at the pointer
Instant upvote for the maine coon.
xyzal··on Cname cloaking, a disguise of third-party trackers
Please correct me if I am wrong, but would not such a tracking be circumvented by enabling first party isolation in the browser? As far as I know, Firefox has such feature implemented: https://www.ghacks.net/2017/11/22/how-to-enable-first-party-...
xyzal··on What a Year at a Mechanic Shop Taught Me About Process (2016)
I used to be a biomedical engineering technician before becoming a software dev, and I have to say I somewhat miss the immediate positive feedback from actual users when you solve a problem. If anyone feels similar after moving into software -- what do you do to keep your motivation up?
xyzal··on Six Policemen Came to the Home of a Young Woman at Night and Seized Her (2018)
Don't they have to present a warrant in the US if they decide to detain you in the middle of the night?

They presented nothing of the sort in this video, and even hesitated to tell the reason of the arrest.

I come from a post-communist country, and this video sends chills down my spine.

xyzal··on Ask HN: What to do after the workday?
After regenerating all day at work, I swap with my wife in the duty taking care for my 9mo toddler. I love her, but I still look forward to being back at my work PC. Hopefully it gets better with time.
xyzal··on Firefox 70
How can I, as a mere user, support Mozilla (except spreading the word)? Is it still true that their main source of income is a search agreement with Google?
xyzal··on Show HN: Cast.sh An adorable instance of your terminal in the browser
I'm sure it is an interesting engineering exercise, but I struggle to think of a situation where I would fire a browser to use the terminal instead of just opening a terminal.
xyzal··on Age Discrimination at Work
My experience: I work in one of the more conservative IT branches (healthcare IT) and the grey beards I have met (usually old coders who did not submit to the management lure) were most of the time really inspiring people in terms of professional (and sometimes 'humane') insight.

This gives me hope, as I love my job and do not intend to leave my chosen career anytime soon.

xyzal··on A man who destroyed his multimillion dollar company in 10 seconds (2018)
Ratner apparently bragged too much, which cost his company a fortune, which apparently was not his intent.

I wonder, if there is a documented case of someone causing similar loss just for the reason of "having enough" with the pure intent of causing as much damage as possible or just for causing as much evil/pain as possible. In the sense of listening to his/hers dark triad temptation.

xyzal··on Show HN: Wave-based non-line-of-sight computational imaging in Julia
I wonder wether there are already any military applications based on wave-based imaging. I assume one would gain significant advantage having such capability, especially in urban warfare.
