xwolfi··on Nobody knows what's going on
Since I've started working in finance, I find all those conspiracies about banks and "wall street" a bit cringe: HSBC is actually a nice bank, they helped me a lot, hedge funds do lose as much money as they make in aggregate across all of them because end of the day it's all a random 0-sum with losers paying winners, inside an investment bank, risk is very managed and boring, deal makers spend lots of time trying to reject proposals, loans are rarely predatory and not always easy to get because nobody wants bad payers, bonuses are scarse, etc.

The headlines about some crisis with uneducated comments about how rich bankers exploit the weaks make me hesitate to trust journalism. Often incompetence is way more prevalent than nefariousness ...

Each time I say stuff like that I get comments saying "maybe but it's not a reason to defend banks", completely missing that it's exactly my point: this hatred of banks is a bit irrational, I think it's fine sometimes to defend them...

xwolfi··on EasyOS: An experimental Linux distribution
It's like crypto: you wouldnt attract anyone paying nearly enough if you had to invest to solve current problems without any idea if you even could. Might as well re-solve inefficiently past problems and you might catch a few passer bys.
xwolfi··on Why "Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" matters (2011)
Or as I tell my colleagues who try to push for more abstract syntax: do you want your brain to do compilation each time your read something, or just have verbose text giving hints at each line ?

It s weird people prefer reading implicit text.

xwolfi··on Maintaining large-scale AI capacity at Meta
And you wonder sometimes if the products being advertised, themselves, couldn't matter more than the targets reading them. We've learned to recognize crappy offering and AI can try to make me read more and more ads relevant to what I'm saying, if it's a crap product, I won't pay anyway :(
xwolfi··on Intel pauses work on $25B Israel fab
Build it in France and Italy and come back tell me about capital management :)
xwolfi··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
But then if I write a Pulitzer prize article called "No snark intended: How the web became such a toxic place", where your comment, and all other of ur comments for good measure, figure prominently while I ridicule you and this habit of dumbing down complex problems to reduce them to little witty bites, maybe you'd feel I stole something.

Not something big, not something you can enforce, but you d feel very annoyed Im making good money on something you wrote while you get nothing. I think ?

xwolfi··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
Yeah they probably were still working on the last buzzword
xwolfi··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
But what is it exactly?
xwolfi··on Televised Music Is a Pointless Rigmarole (1968)
But arte is clearly not good because of music. They do some, but what we watch it for are their mindblowing and regular documentaries they either produce or purchase. As well as their debate shows (I can spend a month watching their daily debates show C dans l'air).

But there is something I learned eventually: I work deep in finance now, on a trading floor in HK, and all their cool documentaries about Finance feel to me, now, very populist and not very honest: so they probably have an agenda trending left wing at least in France. Which is fine, just need to know.

I think AI is BS, but if it could voice-translate to English most of Arte, maybe that'd be interesting enough.

xwolfi··on Unexpected anti-patterns for engineering leaders
And you ignore the fact that maybe you are more to credit for his success than he was. Engineers aren't fungible, aren't all the same, arent all compatible with each other and the manager. Your conclusion is the right one but can we always make it happen ? No.
xwolfi··on AI Overviews: About last week
Well I think in that case that'd be like your dog biting a naughty child in a park. It's not exactly entirely your fault, it's not the dog's fault, the kid is not entirely always innocent either. Put down the dog, fine the owner, scold the child and move on.
xwolfi··on AI Overviews: About last week
It's impossible to get it right: it's not search anymore, it's editorialising. And for computers to do it while adding value will take time, and probably more than applied statistics. Like maybe they should experience it themselves, go against the flow sometimes, have an actual, political even, opinion. A desire, an agenda.

I see people asking the stuff for opinions, like "what should I do when X": you think it's search? You think it's "hard"? It's just insane and there will be a huge hangover once the limits have been properly understood. Puts on Nvidia.

Google is whining that their billions of dollars invested in a thinking machine, an artificial "intelligence" in their own words, is unable to guess when it s been made a fool of, and gets a beautiful F on the Turing test, sigh: but at least it's more interesting than the "metaverse" virtual real estate grift I guess that their main advertising competitor attempted.

xwolfi··on AI Overviews: About last week
Bah, we just have to wait for the next batch of GPU they get so that giant datacenters can be equipped to give us 0.2% more accurate results about how to eat rocks..

Cant wait for the next-gen ads !

xwolfi··on “Imprecise” language models are smaller, speedier, and nearly as accurate
Yup, your response makes me think they should just use a calculator, like everyone.
xwolfi··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
The answer is simple: the single most valuable asset at OpenAI appears to be Altman bullshitting about science fiction AI, and nothing else. When he disappear, value plumetted, partners evaporated, clients stopped paying, competitors rushed to hire him, etc.

It's like Elon 'Electric Jesus' Musk, without him, they're just selling shitty cars nobody quite like. So he can get paid more than all profit Tesla ever made, because without him, there would be 0 profit anyway.

Talk to Tesla owners: they are surprised by how shit the car is, but they feel like mini Elons. That's probably similar at OpenAI ?

xwolfi··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
Sir, let me introduce you to Elon Musk, whose board chairman talk of like a little child you need to please with candies so he can bullshit well at earnings to pump the stock.

Joke aside, the CEO can be a promoter of hype with no particular management skills - if the shareholders, via the board, are happy with that, their money their risks.

xwolfi··on Resume Tip: Hacking "AI" screening of resumes
Obscure to me too !
xwolfi··on I uploaded 11 years of my Day One Journal data to GPT-4o
I don't know if that was as asinine, all-pervasive and exhausting as the AI one. Altman bought millions of dollars of video game cards to make a website that can invent sentences by parsing hundreds of years of human work to guesstimate what passes for expected, and now each time I go to a meeting like "Algo trading, onboarding client X" in my company just yday, a frigging asshole always asks: "And AI, have you thought of AI to trade algorithmically". And the head of algo, a PhD in mathematics, C++ developer, actual money maker, sigh one more time "yes, we're studying what it can do ofc, since it's the future of everything".

The asshole asking that question is always the same: optimal level of incompetence, insecure about his position, aggressive with anyone "resisting change" when we try to save him from himself, and gone within 2 years. Sigh, the time we lose, and as I grow older and navigate those hypes, I feel half of humanity is some sort of social scamming parasite. I just am too shy to try and be one myself.

xwolfi··on I uploaded 11 years of my Day One Journal data to GPT-4o
And Altman is a disgusting guru, it's so painfully obvious but somehow he gets the same amount of pushback as Enron "Electric Jesus" Musk, but for half the accomplishment: at least Enron built cars, lots of cars. Shitty cars, but cars.

Mr Altman (whom everyone calls Sam like he's their friendly post-human overload) is just a cringe VC scammer, not very sure why he's there in the first place, sending "Her" to create some hype 2 days before being called out like a pervert by an actress :D

It's hard to see a train going full speed towards a wall and everyone congratulating the pilot for his ability to go that fast, sigh.

To be fair to LinkedIn, everyone knows it's not expected to be real stories... it's just fun and silly to post random corporate drone bullshit and see people jokingly reply "you inspired me today to thank my boss" or some such.

Anyone who think anything on LinkedIn is not a comedy is missing half of what makes humanity so awesome I think :D They'd be the same who forbid alcohol or dancing and take everything at face value :D

xwolfi··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
On your opposite side, they think if Biden wins babies will die horrible deaths.

American politics are full of superlatives, and very devoid of any real actions. Once the hero or the devil gets elected, nothing happens much.

xwolfi··on Leaked OpenAI documents reveal aggressive tactics toward former employees
You did well: there is never a rule against one-off contract. I can assure you the CEO has a one-off contract, and that lawyer has a one-off contract, at the very least :D
xwolfi··on On the trail of my identity thief
But we didn't ask the bank for any of this. They can just check my fingerprint each time I go to an ATM and provide no card, and I'll survive. They built these systems, we can't do without them anymore, and on top of it I have to secure their identity checks?

Someone stole 2k$ from me by using my CC number recently. Well, awesome, why wasn't there even an OTP ? When I want to buy a 10$ crap on Amazon they send me 3 SMS... They leave these things a bit open to reduce friction, they have to pay for it. My bank paid me back the same day, and that was the least they could do.

xwolfi··on Computer scientists invent an efficient new way to count
Imagine a million elements. How big must your hashtable be ? The article explains it very well, did you miss it ? It's a way to save memory.

But to be honest I implemented it, ran it on Hamlet, and it's very wrong, it's barely useful but maybe if you just need a vague idea...

xwolfi··on Claude is now available in Europe
Yes, let's take very seriously every joke random people do online. Dude come on, been 300 years, you should have discovered humor by now.

Monkeys who've trained since birth to use sign language, and can reply incredible questions, have the same issue. The researchers noticed they never once asked a question like "why is the sky blue?" or "why do you dress up". Zero initiating conversation, but they do reply when you ask what they want.

I suppose it would cost even more electricity to have ChatGPT musing alone though, burning through its nvidia cards...

xwolfi··on Limited Run Games selling burned CD-R games which don't work
I was also surprised when I noticed all my dreamcast backups were completely rotten - I thought discs were meant to last forever...

Instead now I have an active 50TB NAS with disk swapping once in a while... but it's not at all "durable" the way I thought things should be when I was younger... it's actively monitored instead.

xwolfi··on Understanding and avoiding visually ambiguous characters in IDs
I have one on my passport number. I still dont know which it is so I alternate. Hasn't been a problem to anyone yet when registering for planes and crossing borders: the picture is clear, it can be both lol
xwolfi··on Huawei's latest flagship smartphone contains no world-shaking silicon surprises
Terrify ? I'm French and live in China: nobody in France is terrified by the US or China being better at chips. We're better at other things and import chips by giving them euros, and the fools take the trade, so we continue.

And in China, frankly, we have so much needs internally, it's more to power our own crap than to send weapons, or overpower foreign markets. We barely speak English and the americans don't take much Yuans, so their stuff is expensive :(

Be less terrified, and maybe contribute more than just patent rents? It's ok to compete, we're not gonna be at war. Or if we are, we are so corrupt that we put water in the fuel tanks of our missiles: you have nothing to fear.

xwolfi··on Embezzlers Are Nice People (2017)
But they paid for said misdeeds, it's not that important that they pay forever, is it ? I mean it sounds annoying to allow an embezzler to be an accountant again, but I mean, he did his time, he's supposed to have reformed, what are we gonna do ? Consider that never again in his life he's gonna be honest ?
