1,003 karma · joined April 17, 2019

Ethically challenged software engineer working for a major tech company you know. Former technical consultant for the Netflix show ‘Black Mirror’.

My opinions may not always be popular, but they’re usually right, founded on inconvenient truths I’ve observed about our society.

Help me get to 1000 karma and I’ll stop posting forever.

xwdv··on Omegle 2009-2023
To the founder of Omegle, I would say: do not lose heart. The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice. In the end, we will prevail over those who destroy the good works of others under the guise of false victimhood and social justice, and build a very special place in hell for them, where we will condemn them for all eternity.
xwdv··on Dietary restriction of isoleucine increases healthspan and lifespan in mice
I really doubt these low protein diets have any capacity to extend lifespan and healthspan in humans.

The amount of wear and tear on a human body, especially voluntary wear through exercise, simply requires ample nutrients for adequate recovery – and that means amino acids.

xwdv··on Device keeps brain alive, functioning separate from body
There was recently an article posted about inducing lucid dreams on demand. Why not remove a brain from a skull and induce lucid dreams on it perpetually? Perhaps then there could be a way to read brainwaves to see how the mind is doing, maybe even extract crude imagery.

Perhaps this a way to offer some life extension for the terminally ill.

xwdv··on I Got the Fed to Release Its 2011 "Treasury Default" Playbook
What they didn’t foresee is that some people are immune to peer pressure because their goal is to inflict harm.
xwdv··on I Got the Fed to Release Its 2011 "Treasury Default" Playbook
If there’s anything I’ve learned in the past decade is that way, way too much of our government relies on people in power being rational actors with good intentions.

If they wanted to raise hell they could simply make the worst decision and there’s nothing that can be done about it.

xwdv··on Microdot
But why?
xwdv··on Waze will now warn drivers about crash dangers using historical data
Waze is great but I have no idea how they make money and I fear now I’m the product.
xwdv··on The coolest robot I've ever built [video]
An exposed CRT like that is quite dangerous no? Capacity discharge could easily kill.
xwdv··on WeWork Goes Bankrupt
Are WeWorks still good places to socialize with certain types of entrepreneurial people or are they out of style?
xwdv··on UHZ1: NASA telescopes discover record-breaking black hole
This is only true because the speed of light is fairly low relative to the size of the universe. If it was infinite, we’d be bathed in light.
xwdv··on Ask HN: How do you start a research based company?
Don’t start a research based company for money, start it for clout. You can say you are researching cutting edge AI stuff, but not really. And no one is going to validate your claims. It’s research. It’s mysterious, exclusive, inaccessible, and sometimes it’s expected for nothing of value to be produced. A research based company could be as simple as a legit looking website with some relevant and highly technical blog posts pushed out to social media.

Best part, you can use this clout to pick up a few contracts along the way and do some work for clients with actual interest in the field. There’s your money.

While studying my post grad some friends and I started a very prestigious computer vision research company. It was all presented as a very serious co with computer scientists who knew what they were doing. We had $0 in revenue, and our demos were mostly just us playing around with various off the shelf libraries behind the scenes and presenting it to the masses. This gave us glowing resumes and credibility in the industry. We later got real jobs with big tech companies.

xwdv··on A Zoomer explains her generation's malaise to older generations
It gets worse: in a society where children are a luxury requiring careful investment and sacrifice to conceive, child abuse will be far more rampant, as there will be growing pressure from parents to make their children some sort of positive ROI, otherwise why even bother having them?
xwdv··on California wants to end Cupertino's tax deal with Apple
Yup. It’s a shit state now, I used to live up in Northern California for a while. Proposals for the 51st state of Jefferson have been gaining popularity again. I’d love to see it happen as it would probably get me to move back to that region, but not under the current governance.
xwdv··on A Video Game That Pays: Lessons Learned from Working Remotely
It is a privilege to only have to play video games for fun.

In college, I played World of Warcraft just to farm gold, just to get by.

xwdv··on A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time
This could be liberating or terrifying. If you don’t notice time passing, does it feel like you’re just in some eternal existence beyond time, where you have all the time in the world? Or do you just instantly come to a realization some day that time is up and you’re dead?
xwdv··on Berlin's famed nightclubs, losing customers, face an uncertain future
Can you give an example? It seems like being freaky just means dancing like a crazy person. Hardly much repercussion for that.
xwdv··on Telnet BBS Guide
What exactly would you have done differently to appreciate the magic?
xwdv··on Nuclear Conversion for Starship
Not really any more terrifying than driving around in vehicles powered by thousands of tiny explosions per minute.
xwdv··on Scarlett Johansson hits AI app with legal action for cloning her voice in an ad
Usually it is insufficient justification for those who want to profit off something people do freely for fun.
xwdv··on Why You Should Write Your Own Static Site Generator
Considering that a vast majority of people who decide to learn a static site generator never end up really developing their static site much beyond a few articles talking about their static site generation process, I think there is definitely more value in just going all the way and writing your own static site generator from scratch. The code is the true purpose, not the final output. And the thing about a static site generator is, once it works – you’re done. You can put the project away and move on to other common things like building a tile map editor, etc.
xwdv··on Scarlett Johansson hits AI app with legal action for cloning her voice in an ad
We should be free to use celebrity voices for private purposes. I would love if I could replace Siri’s voice with Scarlett Johansson instead.
xwdv··on As the public begins to believe Google isn’t as useful, what happens to SEO?
SEO has always been a moving target. So now it’s all about social media optimization. Think channels, not search results.
xwdv··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
I think some gatekeeping is warranted. If I stitch a wound it doesn’t suddenly mean I’m a doctor.

Similarly, using AI to develop a game makes you as much of a game developer as someone who hires someone to make a game for them. And some development studios are basically that, people hiring developers to make games. But AI can’t compete well with that.

It’s like coming up with a new fusion power plant, but it takes more energy to run than what it produces. Inspiring, but useless.

xwdv··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
Some people are really good at art, some aren’t.

Regardless, I can pull down some off the shelf assets from an asset store and make a game with them.

xwdv··on Copying Angry Birds with nothing but AI
Everyone will think this impressive, but they’re not game developers.

You could literally make all this in probably 24 hours and not spend any time mucking around with prompts.

Like what are we even seeing here? Basically a tech demo of a physics engine, a little UI interaction for throwing a collidable entity into other entities, and some code for setting up a level?

Show me the maintenance, adding new features, bug fixing, cross platform compatibility, shaders, networking code, sound, etc.

xwdv··on People with autism less likely to succumb to bystander effect, research finds
The crazy thing is, the chance of someone dying is about the same as the chances of you losing your checked bags.
xwdv··on Can you use your "free will"? Try your hand
This is one of the kind of tests we can perform on an individual in the future if we suspect they are artificial. A standard human should be fairly predictable, but an artificial person is more likely to produce true random patterns when asked to type randomly.
xwdv··on Meta sued by states over harmful youth marketing
Just 25 more karma and I can finally stop posting.
xwdv··on People with autism less likely to succumb to bystander effect, research finds
The reason becomes apparent when you take a carry on bag and find yourself desperately searching for somewhere to put it in an overhead bin, but there is none. You boarded too late and everyone ahead of you stole your allotted space.

NOW you have to check in your carry on. And waste time waiting for your bag at the baggage claim. If it even makes it. Your bag has much higher chance of being lost if checked in late.

xwdv··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
See this is already more work than I’d want to do. I hate strip clubs. And I don’t want to grease palms in some shady underworld to get access to escorts. Literally just want to pay someone to come over, get me off, then I go about my day. It should be like getting a massage, not negotiating for drugs.
