xuhu··on Oxford University vaccine shows 70% protection
Won't they have to do another trial for that effectiveness number to be official ? Otherwise the other manufacturers could have announced results earlier, due to having to wait for fewer infections.
xuhu··on Pianists for Alternatively Sized Keyboards
Swappable keyboards maybe, even for acoustic pianos ?
xuhu··on Cover Your Tracks
Still, "latest Chrome on Windows 10 and an 1080p laptop screen with Intel Graphics" should be at least ... half of the users out there ?

Yet CoverYourTracks says that even my up to date Chrome User Agent is used by one in 223 browsers, which sounds hard to believe.

xuhu··on Dutch journalist gatecrashes EU defence video conference
The journalist was laughing, but the foreign policy chief just got painted as an emperor without clothes.

And the foreign policy chief was laughing, but I bet he was asking himself "who do I send over there to stop them" while trying to maintain the laughing face.

xuhu··on I'm a dating app profile ghostwriter who pretends to be clients online
Is this different from interview coaches, weight loss coaches, college admission coaches, shrinks, financial advisors, tennis coaches, tennis psychologists, PR consultants, divorce attorneys ?

Could a spouse say "it's not fair, you hired a lawyer to help with your divorce" ?

xuhu··on Turning my smartphone into a boring productivity tool
I use userstyles to browse in black and white, 11px regular font, and no images:

    https://userstyles.org/styles/137906/s-somesites-black-white
    https://userstyles.org/styles/107911/o-small-text-hide-images
Less colorful websites -> less time browsing.
xuhu··on NAT Slipstreaming
I just tested whether my router has SIP ALG enabled with a test account on antisip.com (any provider will do), and softphones running on two devices. After initiating a call, I obtained the 'Contact:' IP and port from Wireshark live traces and used a port checker tool to test whether the router set up a forwarding rule.
xuhu··on Amazon Argues Users Don't Own Purchased Prime Video Content
They can also lock you out for 'fraud' such as starting the game twice on your pc for split-screen multiplay, running some Wine fork or virtualization that they see as anti-theft circumvention, and so on.
xuhu··on Tone-Deafness Test
I practiced with https://tonedear.com until I read that comparing intervals to melodies (like 'Hey Jude' for a minor third) is doing more harm than good.
xuhu··on Facebook Container for Firefox
Yes since version 6.2 from February: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account...
xuhu··on Facebook Container for Firefox
Sync for multi-account-containers was implemented in Feb 2020, nice! And it works on mobiles as well! Reinstalling.
xuhu··on Covid: Remdesivir 'has little or no effect' on survival, says WHO
If I was one of those 90% that survive, I'd rather recover completely than be left without smell, sight, hearing or other problems.
xuhu··on Covid virus ‘survives for 28 days’ in lab conditions
I bought one bag of chips in 2020, versus 100 bags last year. It's because I check my phone while I'm in the house.
xuhu··on I built a lay-down desk
Yes, it's called KindleLazy.
xuhu··on I built a lay-down desk
I suspended a kindle over my bed on two 2-meter rails used for reinforcing wall edges. Best reading I did while recovering from leg injuries, but risky as you mentioned.
xuhu··on Universal Split Screen
Looking at some of the setup guide videos, I guess portrait mode for the monitor would work better as two landscape game windows would fit better on it.
xuhu··on I Want to Fix Goodreads
How did you define the actual "best books" ? I usually pick a group (Goodreads users in country x), scrape the books of all its users, and sort them by frequency: https://github.com/harjoc/goodreads-group-books
xuhu··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
Also lower is the number of transactions. The ratio stays the same.
xuhu··on Pilo: Raspberry Pi-Powered Lights-Out Remote Server Management
If you give up the video capture part, a smart plug and a Raspberry Pi that can send Wake on Lan packets and can act as an SSH gateway should work, without extra parts. My beige Linux boxes currently use a $20 8-port switch and a Pi that's reachable via port forwarding.
xuhu··on Micro-Optimizing .tar.gz Archives by Changing File Order
Some results here, impressive: http://schnaader.info/precomp_results.php
xuhu··on Micro-Optimizing .tar.gz Archives by Changing File Order
Unpacking already packed files before adding them to the archive could also improve compression, if the packed files contain common parts (or were packed in a less sophisticated format).
xuhu··on Show HN: Gmail CLI Utils (bulk delete mail by query, get/create filters)
Use a filter like "has:attachment larger:10mb in:all". For each 100 deleted emails you get 1GB of free space back.
xuhu··on OpenBSD was right to disable hyperthreading [video]
I guess you mean i7-9700k instead of i7-9700.
xuhu··on Termshark – A terminal UI for tshark, inspired by Wireshark
There was some discussion about opening a new wireshark window at the current location so you could navigate like in a browser more or less. It didn't go anywhere https://seclists.org/wireshark/2015/Apr/97
xuhu··on Ubuntu 18.04: Unity is gone, Gnome is back, and Ubuntu has never been better
Swtich to lightdm from gdm3 and you'll be able to choose it in the login screen.
xuhu··on Tesla driver reproduces fatal autopilot accident [video]
I assume the driver didn't want to wait and see if the car brakes at the very last moment, so it's hard to determine if the car would brake in this case.
xuhu··on Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired because I resisted “illegal” diversity efforts
There is no victim. This isn't chattel slavery. Women can say no to shitty culture and find another job. Take some of that good money save up a 6 month emergency fund and GTFO. There is no reason you should be going into work everday with a curdled stomach.
xuhu··on Show HN: Submerger – A SRT subtitles merger useful to study new languages
Wonder what two (or three) languages one should use this with: audio in new_lang, and subs in new_lang and your_native_lang ? Or some other combination ?
xuhu··on GDB 8.1 Released
starti, rbreak and ptype sound good even if they've been available as idioms before.
xuhu··on Timg – Terminal Image Viewer
Does this or any of the mentioned alternatives work over ssh ?
