xuhu··on Apple iPhone 18 Pro Camera test
James Hetfield used to do a lot of portraits with lightning, what with the band logo and all: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/james-hetfield-ride-the-...

But recently he seems to prefer fire or stadium audiences in the background.

xuhu··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
When the first TV ships with a battery to keep running while unplugged, I'm dusting off my soldering iron and my digital circuits handbook.
xuhu··on Transfer files over an Ethernet patch cable
Could a smartphone sit between 2 regular laptops to achieve this with 3 USB cables and a hub ?
xuhu··on FFmpeg 9.0
I still hope a future FFmpeg release will make Intel QSV encoding available on Windows laptops where the manufacturer disabled this capability from the ACPI tables. The only way to use it on these laptops is currently FFmpeg on Linux.
xuhu··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
Hey I just came up with this idea, I'm going to feed copyrighted books into my LLM that remembers them verbatim, and then people pay me to ask the LLM for complete copies of a book.

Wait, no, not verbatim. It transforms upper case into lower case and vice versa.

xuhu··on Mayor Mamdani Says Landlords Can't Use AI Images to Advertise
A real estate photographer described the typical job as taking 15 photos of the same living room while moving a softbox around and then merging the layers in Photoshop. No Photoshop would be like no copy pasting permitted while writing code.
xuhu··on FFmpeg 9.1's new AAC encoder
For one, audio transcription services that use Whisper will sample the input down to 16Khz mono first.
xuhu··on County with 37 Data Centers Asks Schools to 'Conserve Electricity'
A comparison made by some Solaris guy comparing a tech magnate to a lawnmower springs to mind.
xuhu··on A native graphical shell for SSH
Since the half of the app that is running on my local X or Wayland can only display a GUI and doesn't need QtNetwork, QtWebkit, Gtk Webview etc, what lightweight UI toolkit other than html+js do you recommend ?
xuhu··on A native graphical shell for SSH
Being able to initiate a shell app from a regular remote ssh CLI prompt (like "ApacheConfig myhost.com" or "Editor ~/myrepo") might improve integration with people's existing CLI workflows.

It does need an agent that starts with every X or Wayland session and waits for requests from remote SSH sessions to start an app.

xuhu··on Replacing Systemd with OpenRC in Debian
If Unix philosophy is what's keeping systemd from requiring a Microsoft account during install, I'm all for it.
xuhu··on Replacing Systemd with OpenRC in Debian
Linux will still be viable when systemd is gone. There will always be a need for open software.
xuhu··on Turn your site into a place people can bump into each other
I hope sites that just provide a way for people to assemble offline will be the new thing soon.

A photography guide's site that rallies amateurs for walk tours. A planning board for a foreign language practice group. A site with a schedule and registration form for a sports event.

When I read "online social" my head thinks "not-really social".

xuhu··on Improvements to Std:Format in C++26
It's apparently a typo in the article, they probably meant to write `println()`.
xuhu··on Windows UI evolution: Clicking an unassociated file
Products have to change in a visible way so people know they're new.
xuhu··on Humanity isn't ready for the coming intelligence explosion
Unless "nothing" is the ultra rich tech bros and "you" are the people working for them.
xuhu··on I love my Bluetooth keyboard
Is there any keyboard with flat keys, no NumPad and full sized square up/down keys, that one can obtain ?
xuhu··on I love my Bluetooth keyboard
Though it might be a while before hotels start offering Aeron Classic chairs in their rooms.
xuhu··on We're testing new ad formats in Search and expanding our Direct Offers pilot
It's legal and it pays well. That is all.
xuhu··on Killswitch: Per-function short-circuit mitigation primitive
Is there any library that does this safely for user-mode and is currently used in production ?
xuhu··on Agents need control flow, not more prompts
It sounds like the "app written in C++ calling Lua scripts, versus app written in Lua calling C++ libraries" debate.

Both designs (Lightroom, game engines) have worked successfully.

There's probably nothing that prevents mixing both approaches in the same "app".

xuhu··on Rewriting Every Syscall in a Linux Binary at Load Time
SECCOMP_RET_USER_NOTIF appears to switch between the tracee and tracer processes for each syscall. Using SECCOMP_RET_TRAP to trigger a SIGSYS for every syscall in IO intensive apps introduces 5% overhead (and avoids a separate tracer).

I wonder if there's any mechanism that works for intercepting static ELF's like Go programs and such.

xuhu··on Meta removes ads for social media addiction litigation
Online stores don't remove 1-star reviews of their products from their store. Do they ?
xuhu··on Wine 11 rewrites how Linux runs Windows games at kernel with massive speed gains
I hope Photoshop runs in the Linux VM introduced with Android 16, so I can stop carrying a laptop to edit photos and bring just a 0.5kg monitor instead.
xuhu··on Hisense TVs add unskippable startup ads before live TV
It's not sweets and it's not an addiction, not everything on TV is for mindless consumption. The viewer is not who's at fault here. The right mindset is not "accept their terms or give up", it's "make your voice heard and try to make the manufacturers change their practices".
xuhu··on TikTok settles just before social media addiction trial to begin
You can get banned from TikTok ? That's horrible, how ? Can you provide detailed instructions please?
xuhu··on The GNU C Library version 2.43 released
Are there any bugs that an app can carry over just due to being compiled with old glibc headers for compatibility with older distros ?
xuhu··on Airlines call in psychologists to stop passengers risking their lives for bags
Oh god, this is what they'll implement eventually. Each passenger will have to put their bag 15 rows down from their seat.
xuhu··on Windows 2 for the Apricot PC/Xi
Why are the Shift and Caps Lock keys shaped like that ? Is it because those wide keys cannot be pressed from the ends ?
xuhu··on Rob Pike goes nuclear over GenAI
He worked on: Go, the Sawzall language for processing logs, and distributed systems. Go and Sawzall are usable and used outside Google.

Are those distributed systems valuable primarily to Google, or are they related to Kubernetes et cetera ?
