xtracto··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
For someone (as me) in Mexico, they are exactly the same.

Third world societies are not "brainwashed" one way or another with respect to that.

We just see those governments throwing shade at each other. And bullying us ina similar way.

xtracto··on OpenAI Says It Will Not Release Newest A.I. Model Over Safety Concerns
This. We use both opus 5.5 and 6 Sol in a way that allows us to compare their performance. Opus is considerably better.
xtracto··on We're gonna need a lot more mathematicians
Imagine the first time electric calculators calculated the square root of 5. I'm sure people would verify again and again if what the circuits calculated was right.

Then in the 80s, you presses 2 buttons and there you had it in your classroom without thinking twice if the electricity arrived correctly at the transistors.

How crazy will the world be once our [current gen] ANN are like that!

What an amazing thought.

xtracto··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I don't understand why there isn't something as simple as PopcornTime (open source, nobody owns it, nobody hosts it, you run it and creates a server you can use, simple), which includes TV stuff (like EZTV.it had it ten years ago) and sport streams (even with info from Rojadirecta stuff, "cleaned") now.

It's something that a good weekend with a local abliterated Qwen 3.8 local model could cook.

xtracto··on I said no and Apple said yes
That's the problem with these things. Personal preference plays a huge role. And these discussions bring so many people setting their preferences as THE TRUTH.

we should strive and push to keep having these a alternatives. Which the industry is trying to remove.

xtracto··on I said no and Apple said yes
As someone who's first language is Spanish, that was completely unnecessary. You may ot know but in America Spanish is the 2nd most spoken language, with almost 20% of the population speaking it.

So in a US centric forum, most likely you'll find bilingual people that live in the US.

xtracto··on Show HN: Mini-AGI – Dynamic continual learning model trained on 8GB VRAM
This is pretty cool, thanks for sharing. Whe I read it first and saw "continual" I thought for a minute that it was implementing an idea I've been thinking about:

I want to have an agent that thinks continually/non-stop. Imagine a loop of "train of thought" that goes into the LLM and then out. Keep it going so that it "rumiates" thr way we do.

Then, add some sort of "messages" or IRQs when I want to communicate with it. To ask it things and whatnot. I think that sort of cycle in addition to this learning you are doing is what is missing for real AGI.

xtracto··on I Don't Like LLMs
>what happens when a malicious group or nation state decides to let loose?

less than what would happen when a malicious group or nation let Anthrax loose? Or a bunch of Nuclear waste gets into construction beams and other materials (i.e. due to stupidity instead of malice).

xtracto··on I Don't Like LLMs
I agree so much with this. I keep reading that the general "feeling" of society when an LLM does something gives them independency "it broke away and hacked Huggin Face". Like, no, it did what it was designed to do, but something YOU the developer didn't envision.

Is like the "But most of all, Samy is my Hero" worm, or the plethora of Viruses in Windows 95 or MSDOS that ended up breaking the computers as an (unplanned) effect. The people that implemented them and run them were still responsible.

We need to start holding people developing this software responsible. The same thing happened with Credit Card Payments online: In the beginning was like "ooh, we were hacked!" or whatever. Nowadays (in theory...) if they hack your site and you have Credit Card data YOU are liable.

LLM development companies must grow some... responsibility.

xtracto··on Homebrew 7.0.0
I think they would be able to support older architectures under a paid contract if absolutely needed, for the right price.

Other than that, I'm grateful for the free software.

xtracto··on Logo Programming Language
I was also introduced to computer programming using LOGO back in 1989. I remember drawing houses and stick figures in it.

Fast forward around 2010, I gave Agent Based Simulation workshop courses to PhD students using NetLogo , which at the time was very popular in the Social Sciences.

It was very interesting to teach programming to non-tech very intelligent people. Some of them came up with really cool simulation ideas. I loved that part of my career.

xtracto··on Mexican student creates an acoustic fire extinguisher to put out fire in seconds
It's shitty reporting. The girl "discovered" the effect by herself, devised a way to use it as a project, and shitty newscasters blew it out of proportion [pun intended]
xtracto··on Mexican student creates an acoustic fire extinguisher to put out fire in seconds
Haha I loved this: in a thread where everybody is talking about the technology, the merits of the kid "discovering" it and all that, invariably there's the guy who enters the room and shouts "why does people care that she is Mexican!!"

Like... nobody cared, until the guy mentions it. And then he replies back "no I don't care she's Mexican, why do you bring their origin!!!"

FWIW I saw these news in my local news Spanish language sources (yep, Im Mexican too) a couple of days ago. And found the majority of the reporting at that time was exactly a "cool science project" thing.

When I saw it here on HN I was surprised. I even thought like "wow, maybe I didn't put a lot of attention, and it's something bigger". But apparently it's just sloppy reporting, in a telephone-game kind of thing: Some Chilean news saw the headline, and decided to report it as "Mexican 16yo invents X", which draws clicks. Then English based news took it and further deformed the actual facts.

Hopefully this kid gets invited to some podcasts or whatnot and gets something from this. Also hopefully it helps other kids get more interested in sciency projects.

It describes the culture of both companies at that time very clearly.

I think the difference between Apple and Microsoft is that Steve was a "product" CEO. He would bot only send that email, but in addition he would somehow oversee/sypervise those changes ALL the way until he was satisfied.

xtracto··on 'You Can See Everything' Review: Nathan Fielder's Doc About Elizabeth Holmes
Meh, from the documentaries I have seen and reading about her, to me it seems that she is hungry for attention. She will do whatever she vmcan to get attention, and she has succeeded once more with this documentary. She is also getting your money.

I dont understand why dont people stop beating that death horse. She is a scanner and fraudster. She defrauded a lot of people and is in jail for that. Move on. Let her rot in the obscurity in she belongs to

xtracto··on 1Password Replied to My Disappointment
I subscribe to a similar view: I admire things and ideas produced by "worse people" (people that have done worst things in my opinion) than this dude.

It's like the Iced Earth singer drama, or Kevin Spacey. I admire their work, I enjoy their performances, still I think their actions are deplorable and will be happy if they are brought to justice.

Principal AI/ML Engineer and hands-on engineering leader (CTO, VP, Head of Engineering), 20+ years in software, PhD in Computer Science. The last 8 years have been remote fintech roles where I stayed in the code while building and running teams.

Currently at Aloi.tech (AI tax assistance): LLM pipeline for invoice analysis with RAG, fine-tuning of open-source and closed LLMs, and a custom OLAP framework for GB-scale invoicing data. Before that, CTO at Bax Blockchain Services: architected a B2B crypto exchange from scratch (event-driven microservices, RabbitMQ, AWS ECS, Terraform, multi-environment IaC), owned security (WAF, GuardDuty, Inspector, WireGuard), operated a Liquid Network node and hot wallet, and led a 20+ person engineering team. At PrimeTrust, VP of AI/ML & Lead Architect: built the AI/ML team for fraud detection (graph analysis on AWS Neptune, K-NN anomaly detection), designed a Cassandra ledger that took transaction processing from hundreds to tens of thousands per second, and drove the monolith-to-microservices migration. At Paystand, Head of Engineering & Product: led SOC 2 and PCI-DSS Level 1 compliance, cut AWS costs 30%, and grew the Mexico engineering office from 1 to 15. Earlier: Head of Engineering & Data Science at Kueski (ML credit risk models in production, ISO 27001), Ooyala, and academic research.

Looking for: Principal/Staff AI/ML Engineer, ML/LLM infrastructure, CTO / VP / Head of Engineering at an early-to-growth-stage startup, fractional CTO or technical advisor, or founding engineer on a small technical team. Fintech, legaltech, and data-heavy products preferred but not required.

Open to full-time, contracting, and advisory.

Available: Immediately

Compensation Range: $200,000+ USD yearly

xtracto··on TurboKV: Insanely fast Rust key-value store
More or less. I think the use of CPU specific instructions can make an compiled program different than "the rest". Although nowadays some compilers are clever enough to do better than manual optimization.

Anyone knows what are those Chinese chips? Can they be bought? (Assuming im not i the US, And actually im in a 3rd world country).
xtracto··on The End of Programming
Great take, two things come to mind:

First, the "all too small context window" reminds me of GetRight, mp3pro and a lot of other artifacts we invented in the 80s and 90s to deal with the limited internet bandwidth of then. We created artifacts to "achieve things" with the limited technology at hand. In 2026, ive got a 500 mbps simetric home connection. The same way, RAGs and all related stuff are artifacts to help us deal with today's tech limitations. In 10 years, it will be a non issue.

Second, I agree on the architectural patterns. Building (commercial) software will become a real Engineering career. Engineers will define the blueprints of the functionality of software, as well as the "materials" (technology, practices to use, measurement limits, ranges, etc) of tge software to be built, the same way Architects and Civil Engineers do when designing a Skyscraper or a bridge to be built.

As you very well put it, there will still be the "artisan" programmer, who builds whatever code by hand. But that will be as a hobby or some personal project.
