xtc··on Dave Eggers made me quit Twitter for a week
Michele Filgate made me quit reading Salon forever.
xtc··on Securing a Linux Server
Change default SSH ports should be mentioned right away.
xtc··on Strike three for SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket (2008)
'"For my part, I will never give up and I mean never," Musk said.'

I found this to be a great article to re-read in retrospect. His determinism is truly applicable to everyone's lives.

xtc··on It's the 21st century – why are we working so much?
I don't think the two need to be mutually exclusive. Why can't high quality medicinal practices be coupled with lower costs if there's not reason for the costs to be higher? That was my question. Just accepting high costs and arguing the opposite extreme isn't going to help anyone or drive down prices.
xtc··on It's the 21st century – why are we working so much?
Is it justifiable to assume that the cost of health care has been rising to approximately match the quality and technological improvement worldwide?

Or is it more likely that the cost has sky-rocketed out of proportion with the quality of health care (in this country or in the world) with no good reason?

xtc··on YouTube adds Play icon to page titles so you can see which tabs are making noise
I agree. I scrobble to last.fm and usually just dig around the similar artists area whenever I find new music. Finding IDs of tracks I enjoy on mixes are also another source for my library.
xtc··on NFC Ring
Neat idea. A good spin on wearable computing.
xtc··on Trinity College experiment succeeds after 69 years
"Petroleum-derived pitch is black in colour, hence the adjectival phrase, 'pitch-black'."

That was the most interesting thing I found in this experiment.

xtc··on Poll: How old are you?
19 here. I began reading a few of pg's most popular essays when I was 17 then found out about Y Combinator and just dug around a little. Now I'm here.
xtc··on Meldium (YC W13) nets $1M to make sense out of password management
I first read it as Medium and was very confused for a second.
xtc··on SpaceX's Grasshopper Successfully Flew 325 Metres
I can't wait.
xtc··on SpaceX's Grasshopper Successfully Flew 325 Metres
Honestly I would like to see some spectacular failures. Just as Gwynne stated recently, if SpaceX doesn't generate a few craters with this program during testing it means they aren't trying as hard as they can. I'm glad Grasshopper will have its flight ceiling lifted soon with the new testing facility.

Not to say a 100% flight record wouldn't be fantastic, but I'd really enjoy seeing the trend of doubling height to continue, or even greater.

xtc··on Distributed Everything
Shameless self-promotion while also using the same service you denounce. Why did you post your criticism of Medium on Medium? You wanted a larger audience to hear your opinion. That's what the majority of writers on services like Medium are aiming for. Plenty of people currently joining Medium in troves are probably just as capable of creating their own blog, and I wouldn't be surprised if a majority of them use both. Syndicated sites are where people come to have their voice heard. Just like how this was posted on Hacker News, a central site where like-minded individuals enjoy viewing pertinent information and have a larger discussion about these matters. Isn't that one of the primary functions of the internet?

Plus, using names like 'Shitter' and 'F*book' made me discredit your argument rather quick, personally. What's next, is 'Micro$oft' also keeping you down? Or would you rather everyone create their own OS?

On another note, IRC is a safe-haven? That's fascinating news.

xtc··on Coming Out as a Porn Addict
In their eyes it beats a carbonated beverage addiction.
xtc··on USA must not hunt down whistleblower Edward Snowden
A lot of hyperbole in that statement making it really off-base. You may think it's criminal/illegal activity, but the problem is it's completely within the law we have created. Whether or not it should be legal is a different topic.

The actions from what we've seen so far are completely legal; what Snowden did is not. It's incredibly simple.

xtc··on Reddit co-founder on NSA snooping [video]
Glossing over the data that you could glean from reddit was a mistake. Even if there isn't that much valuable data directly from reddit's back-end it's probably more useful to tie it to data from the same users extracted from other websites. You shouldn't have down-played that.
xtc··on A Python 3 implementation for client-side web programming
Why not both?
xtc··on Sucks to be an old engineer
"You know what they do with engineers when they turn 40? They take them out and shoot them."
xtc··on Former Google Exec Turns Whistleblower On Company’s Tax Avoidance In The UK
Whistleblowers pointing fingers in the wrong direction. What they're doing is most certainly legal. What should be looked as is the legislation enabling it. Or rather if it's even a bad thing in the first place.
xtc··on Updated Packages – Python 3.3
Ubuntu also thinks Unity is a good idea.
xtc··on RapidShare will delete free users' data over 5GB tonight
I had been a long-time premium user of Rapidshare through it's peak in 2007 to 2009 or so. Their service was wonderful (or so it seemed) until almost nobody used it anymore. The business model that Rapidshare held on to is clearly failing them as more and more users are switching to other sites that are either free or not that expensive (Mega, Mediafire, etc.)
xtc··on SpaceX Launching Dragon Capsule to Space Station
Anyone else here on the Causeway for the launch?
xtc··on AMD ships 16-core x86 3ghz CPU
Not yet.
xtc··on Show HN: I'm 14, I learned Objective-C, and this is my first iPhone game
...I'm not alone.

I had no idea the author was 14 when he wrote it. I was reading it when I was only three years younger as my first programming book. Unfortunately it wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but it definitely helped me get started in the world of programming.

xtc··on No, "hacker" really does mean "hacker"
The article specified the first use of the term as applied to a criminal act, not just in general.
xtc··on Student Is Sanctioned for Creating Class-Registration Web Site
I'll be starting my Freshman year at UCF in the Fall. I would have loved to use this as compared to myUCF when waiting for my preferred Calc I class to open up. It was a hassle even to just check it every time, and I was never given a clear answer half the time.
xtc··on Show HN: A new way to view IAmA's on Reddit
Once it denotes nested questions it will be perfected. Nice work.
xtc··on Incredibox - Background music for programming.
SomaFM is the key. Cliqhop + Groovesalad. http://somafm.com/
xtc··on Microsoft kills Zune, Windows Live brands; Live ID renamed to Microsoft Account
As a Zune user since the first gen I'm pretty disappointed it didn't take off. I honestly can't imagine having to find another decent portable media player that works so well. Now I just need to keep my Zune HD functional for the rest of time.
xtc··on Stream of random coding music
I recommend almost any of SomaFM's channels, especially if you don't want to be anchored to grooveshark. Cliqhop and Groovesalad are my favorite.
