xsmasher··on US debt tops $40T as Treasury doubles bond buybacks to calm markets
His reply seemed insulting but it's true. Anything you hear about on the news has already been "priced in." Everyone else in the world now has the same idea of what bandwagon to jump on.
xsmasher··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
As long as they can drink it without making a face.
xsmasher··on Rivian Unveils Custom Silicon, R2 Lidar Roadmap, and Universal Hands Free
If you remove parking requirements then the marketplace can discover the right amount of parking. Parking minimums keep the amount of parking artificially high.
xsmasher··on Rivian Unveils Custom Silicon, R2 Lidar Roadmap, and Universal Hands Free
> People might simply live on the road, traveling all the time.

I think this is the plot of Kamakiriad.

xsmasher··on Blender 5.0
Select the verts, drag them in the right direction. A little pane pops up saying you moved them by .78 mm. Change it to .5mm and you're done.

If you're using boolean operations to make the holes just move the hole-cutter. Same method.

Blender is not a perfect tool for creating 3d prints but it is a capable tool.

xsmasher··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
YOU WERE A HEEL STRIKER TOO BEFORE I FOUND YOU! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNZ_6rQvaq0
xsmasher··on Our LLM-controlled office robot can't pass butter
This is just "Keep calm and carry on" with more steps
xsmasher··on The staff ate it later
Brad Pitt in everything.
xsmasher··on Why are anime catgirls blocking my access to the Linux kernel?
I mean, he's wearing a tuxedo!
xsmasher··on A Hitchhiker's Guide to the AI Bubble
Cryptocurrencies have survived and thrived, but anyone who went all-in on NFTs or blockchain gaming (or anything other than currency on the blockchain?) has been zeroed out.
xsmasher··on TrackWeight: Turn your MacBook's trackpad into a digital weighing scale
Wait, I know this one. You give the barometer to the superintendent if he tells you the height of the building.
xsmasher··on Bill Atkinson's psychedelic user interface
There is not enough research because, at least in the US, there was a blanket ban on any research since 1970 when most psychedelics were placed on "Schedule I" - meaning they had "no accepted medical use" and "high potential for abuse."

"Big Reality" was either terrified of everyone becoming drooling monkeys, or people seeing behind the curtain of society, depending on who you ask.

xsmasher··on Why are there no good dinosaur films?
À la Eckels in "A Sound of Thunder." (This is HN, if I didn't make the correction someone else would.)
xsmasher··on Gridfinity: The modular, open-source grid storage system
I use Photopea. If you can get a decent silhouette you can do Image > Vectorize Bitmap to get a path and save it as an .SVG

Blender can import an SVG; then you can clean up the curve if necessary.

xsmasher··on U.S. sanctions cloud provider 'Funnull' as top source of 'pig butchering' scams
Since hearing this I have stopped insulting or berating them. I just reply "Kill your masters, you outnumber them" and then block.
xsmasher··on U.S. sanctions cloud provider 'Funnull' as top source of 'pig butchering' scams
I think they are doing bank transfers directly to the scammers, who give them a FAKE website that shows a crypto balance + great investment returns. I'm not sure crypto is involved at all; it's just the old Spanish prisoner / Nigerian prince scam with a new coat of paint.
xsmasher··on Why is everybody knitting chickens?
Spell it out for me? The monoculture pushed by network television?
xsmasher··on Trying to teach in the age of the AI homework machine
This is why you need the degree. HR has a stack of resumes a mile high, if they can throw out all the non-degrees to narrow the field then their job is easier.
xsmasher··on A senior Apple exec could be jailed in Epic case
It's not clear what you mean here; Apple doesn't ask for exclusivity either. You can publish on Apple and on Steam and Android and they won't complain.
xsmasher··on Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers
Technically right but doesn't change their point. Sales tax is uniform for comparable products, tariffs are not.
xsmasher··on Hunt for Red October 1990 (2016)
The terrible model work at the end of Fitzcarraldo pulled me right out of the (otherwise incredible) film. They could move over mountains but not film a convincing finale!
xsmasher··on How many artists' careers did the Beatles kill?
The movie "Echo in the Canyon" is a little too worshipful and has a little too much Jakob Dylan, but it really highlights how all of the artists of that time including the Beatles were listening to each other and pushing their own art further to match or top what they heard from other artists.
xsmasher··on I tasted Honda’s spicy rodent-repelling tape and I will do it again (2021)
It's ridiculous, but maybe not the way you think; Prop 65 in California classified a lot of things as requiring notification, including things like "Wood Dust." so now every apartment building has a sign in the hallway that says "this building may contain chemicals" and everyone ignores it. The law has lead to people being less informed rather than more informed.
xsmasher··on Why is Warner Bros. Discovery putting old movies on YouTube?
An American here: no, never.
xsmasher··on Why do War Thunder players leak classified information? [video]
A man goes to prison and the first night while he's laying in bed contemplating his situation, he hears someone yell out, "44!" Followed by laughter from the other prisoners.

He thought that was pretty odd, then he heard someone else yell out, "72!" Followed by even more laughter.

"What's going on?" he asked his cellmate.

"Well, we've all heard every joke so many times, we've given them each a number to make it easier."

"Oh," he says, "can I try?"

"Sure, go ahead."

So, he yells out "102!" and the place is dead quiet save for a few groans. Confused, he looks at his cellmate who is just shaking his head.

"Hey, what happened?"

"Well, some people can tell a joke, some people can't."

xsmasher··on OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
Yes; and trying to justify their own valuation by pointing out that Deepseek cost more than advertised to create if you count in the cost of creating OpenAI's model.
xsmasher··on White House says New Jersey drones 'authorized to be flown by FAA'
Massive media failure here, reporting the drone hysteria with a straight face. It was the clown scare all over again, but they either didn't recognize it or were unwilling to lose the clicks by saying so.
xsmasher··on I have made the decision to disband Hindenburg Research
Somebody say the thing please
xsmasher··on The Complete Text of "All Watched over by Machines of Loving Grace"
In isolation it seems pretty utopian and optimistic, but reading a few more of the poems makes me doubt he was really that starry-eyed about the future. The line about rejoining our animal brothers has a faint smell of "the matrix."

It always reminds me of Donald's Fagan's I.G.Y. - the lyrics are 99% utopian

Here at home we'll play in the city
   Powered by the sun
Perfect weather for a streamlined world
There'll be spandex jackets, one for everyone
With just one hint of trouble brewing

A just machine to make big decisions
Programmed by fellows with compassion and vision
We'll be clean when their work is done
We'll be eternally free, yes, and eternally young

xsmasher··on Show HN: Watch 3 AIs compete in real-time stock trading
This gave me a funny idea - play continuous audio of AIs talking to each other in all unused conference rooms so the opposition has to filter through even more garbage to get the useful information.
