xs83··on German transport minister warns of weekend driving ban
Ask Volkswagen - pretty sure they have a solution to this required reporting
xs83··on Ask HN: What do you need to know to be good at the Unix Command Line?
You need to use it as your primary OS and learn by doing.

Start on the basis that you shouldnt have to download something to do what you need, it all comes pre-installed and go from there.

Need to process some text files? Use awk & sed etc Need to partition and format a drive? use fdisk, parted etc Need to encrypt a drive / folder - use LUKS

Everything you need is on the system itself including the files to run tests on, the rest of it will come with normal usage.

xs83··on Ask HN: What tool(s) do you use to code review and deploy SQL scripts?
For what use case?

If it is for a CMS / Web based thing that modifies the structure of the database or inserts some seed data - Use Migrations

If it is for some ETL type job where you are using SQL then migrating to a tool like DBT is probably wise.

xs83··on Intel's "Gaudi 3" AI accelerator chip may give Nvidia's H100 a run for its money
Then I look forward to seeing Intel provide something as user friendly as CUDA for developers to use and for it to have things like RAPIDS.ai supported by Intel
xs83··on Intel's "Gaudi 3" AI accelerator chip may give Nvidia's H100 a run for its money
The lead that Nvidia has over every other chip maker is as much in software and libraries as it is in technology. CUDA and the libraries that implement it (like Rapids.ai) make it easy for data engineers and others who need to use GPU's.

Until the others provide this level of user friendliness I dont see how they compete.

xs83··on How we built the Find My Device network with user security and privacy in mind
So secure that my Galaxy device refuses to use it. Is there something in the Samsung Ecosystem that disables the use of the core android one? I know I can use Samsung Smart things but the rest of my life is in the Google Ecosystem and I would prefer to be able to track my phone through that, especially as last time I needed it Samsung required me to 2FA with my phone to use find my device
xs83··on Ask HN: Best E-Ink reader in 2024?
I have just bought the Kobo Libra 2 and I am very impressed, I have been using a Gen2 Kindle forever but finally decided I needed one with a backlight. Libra 2 is waterproof and seeing as I frequently read in the pool on holiday or in the hot tub etc this was a great feature for me.

For your specific use case I would look at something like the ReMarkable or Supernote as they are almost A4 sized readers and would allow you to annotate the papers etc

xs83··on PM2: Production Process Manager with a Built-In Load Balancer
PM2 fits the job perfectly when you want to start managed processes from the CLI without a config like you would with something SystemD or SupervisorD). It has some nice interfaces for observability.

Its more lightweight than spinning up Docker containers for each process

xs83··on Launch HN: Okapi (YC W24) – A new, flexible CRM with good UX
Going through auth by clicking on Google Sign in to be met with "Please sign up with you work email" is pretty poor CX.
xs83··on HashiCorp Exploring Potential Sale
Google also pushes Terraform as its core IaC so that would be a great fit actually!
xs83··on Meta Has Had Enough of Australia's Link Tax Shakedown; Will Not Renew Any Deals
Yeah I think this was ridiculous, the news sites get money from being unreadable due to advertising, Meta, Twitter etc drive new people to those pages.

Its a dying medium that deserves to die IMO

xs83··on Planito: A 9-day week for a balanced life
Does this assume that you give up on everyone you normally get to see on normal weekends or that you are a loner and have no friends?
xs83··on Prophet: Automatic Forecasting Procedure
Im a Data Engineer in a large consulting company and I have been incredibly impressed with AutoGluon for forecasting. You can build and train a model in around 10 lines of code and it frequently gets into the top 3 or 4% of competitions on Kaggle without much data pre-processing
xs83··on Firefox desktop extensions coming soon for the upcoming Android release
If Adblock works on this then I will switch to Firefox from Chrome - the internet is unusable without it
xs83··on DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber sue New York City over minimum wage law
This! We have DoorDash in Australia but the drivers cannot see whether a tip is added (it usually isnt - because we have minimum wage laws here too). The stories I hear about them just ignoring the orders because they are shown there is a tip and that tip is not acceptable to them is ridiculous to me, it's a pay to win strategy that has no place in a supposed civil society.

I am fine overpaying (the restaurants need to cover the frankly ridiculous 30%+ fees they charge) AND then a delivery fee on top to sit on my fat ass in my jammies and have delicious food delivered to me. I am not fine with a bidding structure where my food might sit there cold until someone decides that my "tip" is acceptable

xs83··on Ask HN: Suing Facebook in small claims?
Cancel your credit card (report it as lost) - Facebook will soon chase
xs83··on Ask HN: Math for Programmers?
Counter point - I am terrible at Maths, like awful.

I failed Maths for Computer Science in my degree but managed to get a pass on it as all my other grades were great. Overall it has really not affected my life in any way or my career throughout my 15 years as a code monkey through many roles into now a CTO position for the past 5.

There are a lot of things and patterns you pick up as you go, and maybe I just got lucky and was in the sweet spot of tools developing fast enough to act like a permanent crutch for lack of mathematic ability.

I guess this is different if I were planning to be a game programmer but for a web focused engineer it has been absolutely fine

xs83··on Launch HN: Infisical (YC W23) – Open-source secrets manager for developers
I don't see Terraform in your docs? Is it hidden away somewhere or not fully supported?
xs83··on Ask HN: What is the most pleasant, uncomplicated full stack to start with?
I think it makes sense for everything Javascript right now, pick a framework like Nest.js and a good ORM like MikroORM and get going.
xs83··on Bard and new AI features in Search
I think simply there are 2 killer features in LLM's vs Google search for me:

1 - Natural Language with prepositions and easy ways to include, exclude and filter 2 - Refinement - "No that wasn't quite right because X - please factor this in and try again" is a lot more intuitive than multiple rounds of operator uses and "memory exclusion" of pages you have already seen.

I find that chatGPT will give me what I need within a few iterations, Google search sometimes takes a lot of searching and reading to get an idea of what I need.

I feel like ChatGPT + Github Code search could be a killer combination for programmers

xs83··on Ask HN: What made your startup fail?
Previous start-up failed because we ran out of money, this was due to constant pivoting and not following through correctly when we actually got something that was bringing in revenue.

I feel my current one is going the same direction too unfortunately, development is the only department delivering, no contracts coming through at all

xs83··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
We don't - at least not all of us.

I have a mandatory 1 day in the office for the staff, the office is there for anyone to work from at any time - no one ever takes it up, they are very comfortable working at home.

And I get it - I prefer working at home too - I also love our 1 day in the office where we can have a laugh with each other, get lunch together and generally bond as a team, but as the CTO of a company where pretty much my entire dev team are introverted , its not a big priority for me to have to get people back into the office.

xs83··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
Yeah its rare here that it goes on the paper receipt, I found that confusing in the US too because I had already paid, so do they take a second charge out for the tip afterwards?

I don't think I have signed a credit card slip in 10 years here in Australia and haven't even inserted my card in the last 5 - everything is tap and go!

xs83··on Easter egg in flight path of last 747 delivery flight
Ok but the dev in me needs to know if this was done manually or programmed into the flight computer, I am assuming the latter as it looks meticulously done!
xs83··on We ship the most code on Friday
"I'll take 'reasons I would never want to work at Railway for $1000' please Alex"
xs83··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
It's starting to crop up here in Australia too - thankfully Aussies are pretty stoic about looking them in the eyes and clicking "No Tip".

To be clear - I will tip for exceptional service or if we have been a particularly difficult table (dietary requirements, number of people etc), but its an exception rather than the rule and its rarely more than 10%.

However often in these cases a surcharge is already added or the meal has been altered in such a way as to negate these issues (Set menu only for tables of 5 or more is common).

Asking me to tip for basic service is going to be refused.

xs83··on Ask HN: How do you balance support and sprint tickets?
This is the way.
xs83··on A first person shooter in 571 lines of GNU Awk (2016)
TIL that AWK is basically a fully featured programming language ( ⊙⊙)
xs83··on Ask HN: How much longer will we have free access to ChatGPT?
I think it needs more work - its very good at information retrieval but it is also returning quite a lot of noise (specifically in the coding space). I have found it invaluable for helping me out with the poorly documented and sometimes esoteric Terraform modules I work with - but it rarely produces something that doesn't have an inherent flaw in. When questioned on it - it often says "yes you are correct - that is an error" and then produces an entirely different set of code.

Its hugely impressive but I think it still has a way to go before I would pay something meaningful for it, maybe the next release will solve a lot of things once the models are retrained now the public has had time to stress test it?

xs83··on Google combines Maps and Waze teams in restructuring move
Didnt they say that they would always be separate teams? Im not surprised by this move but surprised because I could swear when they bought it they said they would maintain both teams...
