xriddle··on Advertising as a major source of human dissatisfaction (2019) [pdf]
Yet how many of our jobs wouldn't exist without advertising ... I'm not saying it's right or wrong just a fact. Advertising is foundational to many modern industries, especially digital ones. Social platforms, media companies, search engines, news, free apps, podcasts, streaming tiers. A ton of your daily internet exists because ads bankroll the whole mess. Without advertising, half the tech economy collapses into subscription-only fiefdoms. Unfortunately if advertising vanished tomorrow, lots of companies would die, tons of jobs would evaporate, and the economy would contort into something unrecognizable.

xriddle··on What Demonic Possession Is Like from a Vatican-Trained Exorcist
As an atheist if I saw this (levitation) in person I would very quickly become a believer. That said the lack of any real evidence is telling considering this would be the greatest marketing material for recruiting new members.
xriddle··on Quebec's public health insurer hangs up on Anglophone woman for speaking English
As an "eligle" (yes, you need permission to be spoken to in English) anglophone, born and raised in Quebecistan, relocation is becoming a real consideration. The amount of resources wasted on language issues while so many other more pertinent issues need addressing is unconscionable.

xriddle··on Lessons Learned from 1 Year of Intermittent Fasting
>> To build muscle, you need to eat more calories than you burn. You need to have a net calorie surplus.

>Not true, can be done, you can find examples on the internet.

>There is no need for a caloric surplus to build muscles. Muscles are build from amino acids, not "calories". The body "eats up" muscles LAST: it will go through your fat first.

Per the latest science, discussed at length in this podcast, and despite any anecdata, this is false. You cannot synthesize muscle without adequate protein (aprox. 1gr per lbs of bodyweight) and a caloric surplus unless anabolic steroids are used. If you have sources for your claim of body recomposition other than ancedata please do provide it.

xriddle··on Ask HN: What supplements do you take that have good scientific backing?
Came here for advice but gotta say I'm disappointed so few comments mention any scientific sources. Something I would expect on HN.
xriddle··on Montreal is what North America could be
Born and raised here 40+ years ... The language laws are ridiculous and getting worse, the roads are horrible and getting worse, traffic is horrible and getting worse, salaries are not on par with the rest of Canada and our winters would be considered apocalyptic to anyone not used to it. If you're listening North America, nothing to see here move along. I would move in a heartbeat if my family roots weren't here.

xriddle··on Fruit eating possibly linked to primates' large brain evolution (2017)
Unlike glucose, fructose (sugar from fruit) is metabolized by the liver, and then converted to fat. Maybe fruit eaters were simply able to store more energy as fat which supplied the nutrition and/or extended survival required to evolve larger brains.
xriddle··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
OP is a class act. I reached out to him the first time he posted this and he was really helpful with answering my questions. I applied then and am now one class away from finishing my Masters in Cybersecurity. I have 20 years experience in the field and am in a stable, well paying position that I don't plan to leave. This was a vanity degree for me but I also wanted to learn something in the process. So I took my time an emersed myself in the course material even though I could have probably tested out of most courses within a few days. Like any school, WGU will allow you to get what you want out of it. You want a checkmark? WGU will allow you to can get that cheaper than anywhere else. You want to really learn and get credit for it? Then take your time and you wont be disappointed. Are you done learning after your degree? Nope, but as a lifelong learner my experience at WGU was great and am glad I went for it.

xriddle··on Ask HN: Life Changing Books?
After being forced into evangelical Christianity at a young age, no 2 books were more eye-opening and life-changing for me than:

Letter To A Christian Nation - Sam Harris The God Delusion - Richard Dawkins

The moment you realize you've been lied to your whole life is horrific and liberating ... it's hard to describe. Took many years to "let go" but i don't think it would have been possible without these 2 books for me.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for doing this again. Is a work authorization visa (TN H1B etc) required to be hired for a remote US position for a Canadian not looking to relocate just yet.

Thanks

xriddle··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
I've been wanting to build one for a while but I see so many pre-owned infrared saunas available on the cheap. Any consensus if it's just as good? The article references one study that used infrared that reported positive effect.

xriddle··on Ableton Live 11
Not to thread-jack, but are there any worthy open-sourced competitors to Ableton? I'm just getting into DAWs and was thinking of buying Ableton Live but haven't had the time to explore/compare other options. My musician buddies all tell me not to waste my time and just buy it.

Last follow-up reply- I promise....How would someone like myself go about demonstrating their eligibility for and O-1? Would someone in my position look for a job first and then have the hiring employer worry about this or is this something I should do on my own before applying to jobs? BTW thanks for being generous with your time and doing all this.

Yes i'm currently in Canada now ... No it would not be for my employer. I don't have a job offer currently. I would like to know if it's even possible before attempting to apply for jobs.

Hi Peter, I'm a dual citizen Canadian(born)/Italian (passport) with 20+ years experience in Tech. Co-Founded and sold my own business and now CTO of the company that acquired my business. I don't have an actual degree and my highest education level is a private college degree from a tech trade school called a DEP and some industry specific certifications like CISSP, CISM , CEH, MCSE. What's the easiest way for me to get visa sponsorship, if any?

Thanks
