xref··on Silicon Valley Bank is the second-largest US bank failure in history
With “a little” interest, not at all commensurate with the risk taxpayers took on with the bailout investment

> Unfortunately, the return paid on TARP did not keep pace with these private returns. Thus, taxpayers ended up subsidizing banks, and hence the narrative that “banks paid every penny of TARP with interest” is a bit misleading and certainly incomplete.

> But the gains from the recovery were captured disproportionately by the recipient banks. Hence a nuanced interpretation of our results is that the TARP return was less-than-fair for the risk it imposed on the taxpayers, and the banks ended up getting a subsidy to the tunes of billions of dollars in the process.

Unlucky for the UK coffee shop that wouldn’t take my USD this morning I guess? Not quite sure what you’re trying to say, if a country doesn’t want to accept usd…they don’t have to
xref··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
So does Kagi put a date on _every_ search result ala Google? One of the reasons I finally drifted away from DDG was its very spotty displaying of the age of each result. Was constantly ending up in far outdated articles

Ex searched DDG just now for “camp fire 2018” and only 1 of 10 results is dated. A lot happens in 5 years with lawsuits etc, I don’t want articles with updates from 2019!

xref··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
I was curious how much/if any unique index Kagi maintained because I also finally gave up on DDG as its repackaging of Bing became worse and worse to the point where there was no value add vs just going back to Google.

But now I’m even more hesitant on Kagi since I knew it used bing, whose results both direct and from ddg have been supremely disappointing, but it also pulls google which…I can just get direct from the horse’s mouth? So the value add seems to be whatever is in their small index. Hmm I just dunno.

> is impossible that the sun should constantly be giving out heat, without either losing heat or being supplied with new fuel. Assuming that the heat of the sun has been kept up by meteoric bodies falling into it…

Neat article, they were asking all the right questions. Calculating how long a coal body could burn, and a mechanism/quantity required to refuel it based on the mass of the solar system

I dunno, just based on how much studios believe they need to deliver in a AAA title. You seem like you’re craving a simpler experience than the enormous budget and revenue expectations dictate will get created.

I pay $20/yr for their service it’s so good, and I can turn on/off quickly per-device when I need normal dns to work, instead of having to ssh and tweak pi-hole or whatever across the whole network

xref··on Galactic settlement of low-mass stars as a resolution to the Fermi paradox
We don’t, and you have no numbers to back that up. When my blind grandma can sit in a car and it drives her from Paris to Rome though the Alps in winter, then maybe.

Keep in mind this thread’s premise is us developing an intelligence that can navigate space and maintain all requirements of that for millennia. Not driving a couple miles on a clear stretch of highway.

xref··on Galactic settlement of low-mass stars as a resolution to the Fermi paradox
Ehhh I’d side with the parent on this one, given how we thought self-driving cars were gonna be a solved problem by 2015 but how intractable the problem has turned out to be.

That was such a strange choice by Mozilla, I mean the plug-in was specifically for people who play the Mr Robot game. Even after Mozilla force-pushed it to their entire user base players still had to manually enable it to play. If the whole damn thing required manual intervention anyway why didn’t they just put it in the addon store to start with?!
