xradionut··on The limits of Google’s openness
Microsoft has made many recent decisions that have irritated or pissed off people including their customers and developers.

In this case I understand that they have valid grievances with Google, but there's this German word, schadenfreude, that comes to mind.

*schadenfreude requires a HN Enterprise reply agreement before being used in a post. :)

xradionut··on Be a sociopath—or just act like one
Charles Manson's favorite book was "How to Win Friends and Influence People".
xradionut··on Smalltalk runtime in the browser
Squeak is a easy way to learn Smalltalk.
xradionut··on Google Blindness
The original poster is a developer. A developer for Apple platforms. Chances are this affected him and if not, it did affected his peers. Yet he never mentions the massively embarrassing outage...
xradionut··on Google Blindness
Marco so conveniently forgot the whole debacle of Apple's developer resources and sites being down for almost two weeks.
xradionut··on WebGL to add 3D hover effects to your website
I agree. It may be useful in certain web applications, but chances are it will end up being used for advertising and "effects" that are annoying and unwanted.
xradionut··on Go for System Administrators
It's not go. It's the fact I work with admins and analysts that are not formally trained developers. Python and PowerShell are their tools.
xradionut··on Technology enables crops to take nitrogen from the air
"And the farmers will continue to over fertilize."

The smart corporate farmers don't over fertilize, it costs real money. Research the technology that they use, satellites, GPS and automated tractors/spray rigs that adjust in real time for specific soil needs.

xradionut··on Stop Thinking That Tech Hacks Are the Solution to Our Surveillance Woes
"majority of the population is absolutely fine with the status quo"

The majority isn't happy, they just aren't hungry enough to make changes. Plus what can the majority do when the political/economic/information system is totally rigged against them? Voting doesn't work in the national arena, protests don't work and revolutions/social disorder have a high chance of failure, death, destruction and worse government.

xradionut··on Go for System Administrators
My coworkers whom aren't gurus can read and edit Python code. Go? I doubt it...
xradionut··on Hex, Lies and Startups
Including "friends and family". (Except for OSS and local user group training...)

Family? Yes, family. I only do free computer work for my spouse and her mom. No one else. Any siblings, aunt's, uncles, neighbors, etc... get the standard look of stupidity and are referred to my cousin who will charge them, but does good work.

xradionut··on Email service used by Snowden shuts down, warns against using US-based companies
This is an issue among programmers and technical people because it affects us politically and monetarily. Who wants to use SAAS (aka Amazon, Azure, etc), when security is compromised? Why can't I trust Google, Yahoo or Microsoft? Why should I build any services or web sites when they can pulled/compromised just because a certain user or group accessed them or I pissed someone of power off?

Yuck is right. The truth is yucky. "The truth will set you free, but it's gonna piss you off first"

xradionut··on In Tough Times, Abandon Your Employees
In the case of many consumers and Walmart, the consumer doesn't have the money to pay for the alternative. It's the only affordable market in their area.

In the case of Goldman Sachs, consumers are not involved, the company has so much power, no one in government dares to strongly enforce the laws, short of a slap on the wrist. In a utopian "ethical" world, GS would have been dead in the 1930s...

xradionut··on In Tough Times, Abandon Your Employees
Stop bagging on Microsoft!

;)

xradionut··on In Tough Times, Abandon Your Employees
" It isn't a meme, its a rule. And it is enforced (or not) by the SEC and the shareholders themselves."

Enforced "selectively" by the SEC...

xradionut··on EFF: "Parallel construction" is really intelligence laundering
"Now, there are bad prosecutors out there. People motivated by politics and self interest, but they are the few."

There's probably more than a few. Consider the large number of cases that have been overturned in Illinois and Texas over that last decade or so. Many of these folks were railroaded and only saved by volunteers and brave attorneys.

And for all the damage these "common" criminals did, consider that much of the recent massive economic fraud done and damage caused by well connected "businessmen" and "bankers" will not go punished due to lack of enforcement and statue of limitations.

TANJ!

xradionut··on The Sun's Magnetic Field is about to Flip
It's easier than you think to "capture" selected chunks of the RF spectrum. DOD, etc, have had this capability for decades, civilians have had scanners and broadband radios for decades. Amateurs can record entire HF bands and decode multiple CW and other signals in real time with modern receivers and computing power.
xradionut··on The Sun's Magnetic Field is about to Flip
Amateur radio can be rewarding. You can build radios/antennas, explore physics, yak with folks around the world without internet/telecom companies or do public service. Current nifty ham technology is SDR, (Software Defined Radio).
xradionut··on How the Pentagon's payroll quagmire traps America's soldiers
Problems with pay were one of the primary reasons I didn't reenlist. This was an issue in the 80's. I lost days of personal time talking to yeomen, chiefs and officers just because every other check was late or missing. Turned out for the best, since I would have ended up on the USS Stark since my current ship was going to be decommissioned.
xradionut··on LinkedIn rejects engineering ads with female images, bans account
You can go to any tech conference and find attractive engineers and programmers of any gender.

My bad! Those are recruiters... :)

xradionut··on LinkedIn rejects engineering ads with female images, bans account
So a possible theory is that the images are being rejected because they are attractive?
xradionut··on Creator of xkcd Reveals Secret Backstory of His Epic 3,990-Panel Comic
Not really.

Inferring epoch from constellations is an old sci-fi theme and a topic that's discussed in basic astronomy classes. Considering the knowledge base and nature of this web comic's readership, I'd expect that this would intrigue and capture a certain percentage. (Smart people are smart and usually inquisitive...)

xradionut··on Did Goldman Overstep in Criminally Charging Its Ex-Programmer?
Why boycott GS? It's their state, country and mostly their world to loot. They have been above the law for over 80 years. They own the current administration, courts and congress. I wouldn't doubt it if someone claimed they had access to much of the NSA collection due to the amount of influence they have...
