As a lifelong Texan I do believe you overestimate the knowledge base of people that willing live in East Texas. Most of the technical smart folks in Texas have migrated to Austin, DFW, San Antonio or Houston for real jobs. And most of them don't have a fucking clue about encryption.
East Texas is a dream situation for attorneys considering the average knowledge is lower than the rest of this state. Have this trial in Dallas and you might get a engineer from TI or a statistician from my company on the jury. East Texas is what we in the city refer to as the "Sticks". The per capita income is half that of even the older suburbs in Dallas.
I see C and I wonder if that's the best we can do for a systems programming language. Maybe C is just a local optimum that we have just invested too much manpower into to switch to anything else?
Some people do use PGP, but they pay for it or it's an internal component in a larger system. GPG, the OSS version does have a sucky interface, but that's not the real issue people don't use it, there's three others:
1) Most people don't give a shit about encryption 2) Most people are too fucking lazy to understand/use encryption (Not being cynical, this is reality.) 3) Writing good encryption software is thankless and discouraging. There's a ton of commercial companies that use SSH and GPG that haven't donated squat to the developers.
"Did any of us make better encryption tools, despite there being available encryption libraries? Not to my knowledge."
You don't work where I do. I wrap GPG in another layer of software to make it more usable to the above average folks at my job. It's mainly limited to automated processes.
I co-lead a local programming user group and we commonly help people. Frequently we encounter people that want us to fix the bug in one line of code and don't want help in fixing the structure, the function, the readability or overall program.
The zenith of peak cynicism is when you wouldn't be surprised if the .01% (or powers that may be) decided one day to reduce the world population through NBC warfare just to maintain their power.
Besides my own, I interact with our client's IT departments as part of my role. They run the spectrum from dysfunctional to superior.
As for his post, it should have been titled: "A New Kind of Programming Language".
I don't know how to feel about this partnership. As someone whom likes C#, it makes sense. As someone that likes OSS, it brings to mind all the old accusations from the some of the OSS community about the purpose of Mono.
This may sound like an inane comment, but trying working along Excel power users for the past two decades. Most people have no idea of the crazy, huge, complicated environment that is Excel.
If you need nicotine, use a patch or gum, not a device that may spew shit in the air. If you "vape" take that stuff outside.
