xradionut··on Game Programming Patterns
"If there is one pattern this book couldn’t live without, this is it. Game loops are the quintessential example of a "game programming pattern". Almost every game has one, no two are exactly alike, and relatively few programs outside of games use them."

I've borrowed many of the game loop and other game programming principles when developing code for controlling external equipment like robots and radio transceivers. It's a better model than some of the crazy state machine code I'd written in the past.

xradionut··on A thorough PGP tutorial
Making GPG and programs that use it easier to use would be nice. But the primary issue is that many people that should be able to comprehend PKI basics and necessary background material to use it, are too "busy" or "lazy" to spend the limited time to even scratch the surface.

I face this daily, since I'm the go-to guy at my office for scripting/coding solutions for these folks. They just want it to work without having to learn or understand their decisions. And these are the same people that will spend hours figuring out complex lunch accounting issues or read volumes on video game strategies or rebuild engines.

You can improve the written documentation with diagrams or produce a graphic novel for the reading impaired.
xradionut··on Ask HN: Why don't companies open-source the source code of their old products?
To OP:

How long have you been in development, specifically corporate development?

Imagine code with no modern tools or development process and a limited number of people that might understand how and why it was written. Code written under pressure or by overly clever geniuses. Code not under source control with no or little documentation. Code written for companies that don't exist or have changed hands numerous times. Archived to media that no one has computers or drives or OSes for...

xradionut··on Update on Novena Open Laptop
If you read bunnies post carefully, this probably isn't the open laptop that most people are hoping for. It's tailor made for an EE that does a lot of high speed digital work and wants an open laptop. RTFM indeed!
xradionut··on Why Green Architecture Hardly Ever Deserves the Name
Energy efficient architecture is much easier on the residential level if properly applied. Unfortunately many of the better concepts run afoul of over zealous city regs and development restrictions. Plus residential developers have no monetary incentives for changing their crappy processes.
xradionut··on Why a more transparent NSA would be good for Barack Obama
Here's a bad food analogy:

The two parties are two separate flavors of ice cream. Everyone loves ice cream, so they argue whether chocolate or vanilla is better. What they really need is an actual balanced diet, but that's not going to happen since most of the voting public is politically a 4 year old child that wants ice cream...

xradionut··on EU Parliament supports the possible suspension of U.S. data sharing agreements
Civil disobedience in the US is either caged in "free speech areas", co-opted by undercover police, or totally ignored/denigrated by the media. The power wielders learned their lessons in the '60s and have worked on eliminated this issue since the '70s.
xradionut··on US sends pre-emptive warrant to Ireland to stop Snowden flight refuelling there
US has other points of leverage on the Irish.

(How about we close this nice tax scam you got going...)

xradionut··on US sends pre-emptive warrant to Ireland to stop Snowden flight refuelling there
Which is funny since many of the US wealthy regard their homes outsides the States as bailout refuges if the situation in the States gets hostile to them. (Which is probably a good insurance policy...)
xradionut··on EU Parliament supports the possible suspension of U.S. data sharing agreements
"These protests had no effect."

It's easy to counter mass protests. Either under-report them or co-opt them. If the power structure ignores voters and protests, the only other recourses are apathy or violence, both which don't have good consequences either.

xradionut··on A few words on Doug Engelbart
I think the huge focus on web development set CS back at least two decades in certain areas. The industry has been so intent on reinventing applications through the browser, it's lost ground in what can happen in areas like Engelbert's or Smalltalk or real hypertext.
xradionut··on Restore the Fourth
We do care, it's just that we are cynical about real change that actually makes a difference for the populous at large. Any course of action won't have results or will have bad results.
xradionut··on Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade
Personal firearms are worthless against NBC weapons. And I wouldn't be surprised to know genetic weapons are being developed...
xradionut··on Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade
"It's making itself vulnerable."

It's not vulnerable, it's more dangerous.

It's just that more people are finally see the men behind the curtains and realizing that they are just as petty and human as the rest of us, but have insane amounts of power. And are not willing to give up any of that power or even display any true global leadership or responsibility.

Realize that "these people" have absolute power. And as time goes on, don't need as much as the population around to maintain their status or luxuries. What would you do in their place if faced with a angry populous?

xradionut··on Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade
And Jesus could be interpreted as an alien visitor playing a prank on us primates. Works both ways.

I doubt that he's taking the book literally. It would be hard to follow the old testament to a T. (Maybe he's betting Pascal's Wager or having a spiritual life really does help him get through the rest of this irrational life's crazy times.)

As for geology, it's pretty evident that prophets that wrote the "Truth" millennia in the past probably didn't listen when the voices from on high droned on about plate tectonics and such.

xradionut··on Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade
Wrong. The people that control the USA/world are the bullies. We in the States are as powerless as you.

The System's rigged, but we still have to play...

xradionut··on Bolivia to file UN complaint over airspace blockade
You, the US and the rest of the world are nuclear/conventional weapon and economic hostages to those actually in power. Once you realize that you really can't change truly change that, you will become enlightened.

NSA whistleblower...

:)

xradionut··on Python Tools for Visual Studio
You are fighting various other teams in Redmond/power users that have issues with OSS and technology that's cross platform and not from the Mothership. Python/Iron Python would have been a great default language for administrative scripting , but nope, they had to reinvent the wheel with PowerShell.

(I've had MVPs yell at me for discussing data analysis with Python, even on Windows.)

xradionut··on Microsoft is retiring TechNet subscriptions
Especially those folks that need control of their data. And don't want the abysmal Azure upload speeds. Nor NSA access to their data.
xradionut··on Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow
"Well I do hate to say it but we've always had an "us or them" mentality to the rest of the world. I mean we were so isolationist that we were willing to watch Europe burn from afar rather than do anything. There's no telling what would have happened without Pearl Harbor; the U.S. may never have joined the war against Germany at all, in fact."

The rich would have made more money selling arms to both sides. (In fact some did.)

xradionut··on Windows 8.1 Preview

xradionut··on Windows 8.1 Preview
CLI/PowerShell.

Also there's the meta-decision that comes from questioning Redmond's judgment and actually looking at alternatives.

xradionut··on Windows 8.1 Preview
I wanted to shout "Get your touch screen shit out of my server rack." Then I realize that I can run Server 2012 without a GUI or not. (evil smile)

The one good thing about Windows 8 in my world is that it's forcing people to make decisions they have been putting off for years.

xradionut··on Our web development workflow is completely broken
I give it two decades.

People are trying to "fix" the web, when it should be replaced or redesigned. Thus problem is human, not technical. Whom should decide what replaces all the TLA that is required for the "modern" web? Too much time and money is invested in browsers, servers, languages, frameworks, training, tools etc...

Not that's all bad. A lot of technology that wouldn't have been developed, has been. It's changed a lot since I started building sites in '94. But I still can build nicer apps for the desktop, with better interfaces, better performance using a single programming language faster than I can develop "rough" equivalent web application.

xradionut··on Announcing Microsoft Ventures for startups
Sounds like they are priming the pump for Metro and Azure as well as trying to get some new blood on their side.

I've been tempted to go down this road, but then my memory of previous startup experiences and the number of times I've been pissed off about shit from Redmond stops me.
