PS: I'm not saying that there is uniform initial connectivity. Just, the prediction level units (cortical columns) are unable to predict anything until they learn "something".
All this philosophical labyrinth of words seems futile. We need to have a right system level model of the cortex and subcortical structures to progress. I feel like we are trying to resolve this problem looking at the quantum effects in the transistors (using the previously cited analogy) [neuroscience] and looking to a datacenter [cognitive science]. We need to choose the right level of abstraction. We haven't figured out what is the right one in the last 100 year. We will do... and perhaps discover that Cortico-thalamic pathway in the von Neumman base of our OS...
The hardware issue is terrifying. And the worst part, it seems not possible to fix it without trowing away decades of performance enhancements. This epic screw-up of epic dimensions from computer architecture guys won't go away that easy.
> Side-channel attacks [20],[21], [22], [23], [24], [25] are beyond the scope of the paper
If all current hardware (i.e. OOO and caches) is vulnerable to speculative side-channel attacks, how they dare to say that is secure? With current hardware, nothing is secure (full stop)
This seems really close to the metal, either to have a non-negligible maintenance cost or not being able to fully exploit the hardware at use.
We will not wait for that long. When the fundamental "piece" comes out, all our current knowledge in neuroscience will fall into place very quickly.
And requires an OS to run too. That's another dependency! This and memory leak, seems quite forced. Ad homminens doesn't help either.
