I think the parent poster was referring to how much noise there is, and I'd agree. The moment you start learning, just the fanciest stuff is shoved down your throat. So you just assume its the best and roll with it.
I find myself tinkering more with PHP now that I've been using js for the past 7 years.
At least that’s how I think of it, speculation creates nothing new. Instead it depletes resources that could have otherwise been used on something more meaningful.
I will buy it.
Is this the future of mobile?
So when you have developers learning about app dev assuming they will have an internet connection, and most of the time really fast since it’s their dev machine the apps are being built on. Caching sort of becomes and after thought and doesn’t get much attention.
Also, I do recall the api for doing this sort of stuff was very SQL like, at least in the iphone. This probably adds another layer to most devs knowing frontend only and being exposed to CRUD apis.
How do you choose which parts to share with your kids and which ones to omit?
Have you found a community that your family can use to replace the church? For me I’d think they would be people from my back home, as a visible minority that’s quite easy but I do feel that if you don’t follow the religion entirely, you’d get judged and ostracized.
Maybe it’s getting work “done” is what’s most attractive to you. I can see how it must feel to see your work right in front of you when you are writing code, but you need to be very aware of what you want. I’d not be happy if I switched fields to avoid management just to end up being a middle manager in a couple of years.
Then what?
Research before you build anything. If there’s no need for it, don’t build it.
Choose your business partners wisely. Don’t fall into the trap of working with smart assholes, if someone is an asshole - no matter how smart. The asshole-ness will take over no matter what. (That’s just one side of it, many other things to watch for).
Build trust, it takes time and effort to get this one right.
Put your name on your work. One of pg’s essays also mentions how putting your name on your work let’s society reward you. I’ve seen it happen in front of my eyes. The product with a UI that looks bootstrapped together is like magic for your customers. No matter how basic or “ugly” your think your product might be, stand beside it like it’s your first born.
Inspired by Mitchell Hashimoto's VMWare setup[0]. I setup my own computer in such a way, I now have the best of both worlds. Developing on a linux machine, where I can control everything if I wanted (down to the OS) and the ease of Notes/iMessages whenever I need it.
Window management is a pita because of internal APIs and the fact that Apple doesn't cater to people that actually care about these tools. Check out Yabai[1] which btw requires you to disable SIP (System Integrity Protection) if you want to use its full potential.
Instead you can run NixOS and choose your favourite window/tiling manager (i3).
Package manager: I still run Nix but I am not that happy with it. Either I need to spend some more time or look for an alternative. One of the problems is the ability to easily pin older versions.

But, I would encourage people to try out NixOS. Its much better than the package manager, yet it follows the same basic principles.
- Uses a simple DSL language
- 1 config file describes your entire environment, you basically use nix the language to tell your computer if you want wifi enabled or not, or if you want sound, or if you want i3 etc.
- Its easy to roll back, since the config file is versioned (like git)
I personally use a mac machine, running nixos in vmware fusion and I can't believe how long I had been using a separate machine for development and another for personal use.
I get the best of both worlds with this setup; my messages and notes are here, I get world class hardware (come at me bro), and I get to control every single aspect of my development machine.
I still use docker inside nixos, and yes I know its almost supposed to replace docker and all but I will get there one day, right now is not it.
Areas for improvement: - They should have come up with a better name: nix, Nix and NixOS are confusing (language, package manager and operating system - in that order. Yes, they went with an upper case letter for the pkg manager) - Docs NEED to be better, this is not an easy task. The language is shared between every component. - Give playgrounds to beginners, I shouldn't have to download the minimal iso and boot it on my machine to get a sense of how powerful it is. There has to be an easier way.
End of my rant. I started using it a month ago, I have run into issues with dependency pinning but I remain optimistic.
