I think I am extremely bad at matching clothes. If this website can really solve this problem for me, I would use it in a long run. So in short, I would try and if it works for me, I would continue using it. If the result is not too great, I won't.

It’s somewhat surprising to see Very Serious Researchers (apologies to Paul Krugman) using Excel. Some years ago, I was consulting on a trademark infringement case and was trying (unsuccessfully) to replicate another expert’s regression analysis. It wasn’t until I had the brainstorm to use Excel that I was able to reproduce his results – it may be better now, but at the time, Excel could propagate round-off error and catastrophically cancel like no other software!

Microsoft has lots of top researchers so it’s hard for me to understand how Excel can remain so crappy. I mean, sure, I understand in some general way that they have a large user base, it’s hard to maintain backward compatibility, there’s feature creep, and, besides all that, lots of people have different preferences in data analysis than I do. But still, it’s such a joke. Word has problems too, but I can see how these problems arise from its desirable features. The disaster that is Excel seems like more of a mystery.

This article has left me speechless.. It reminds me of what my stats prof said about this kind of research..Researchers doing this kind of research have to believe that they will find the results the pharmaceutical company wants before they conduct the study. In other words, they are not testing if the drug works; they are just showing that the drug works.

I usually don't have a concentration problem. I plan things early and get things done before the deadline. I am also generally very persistent. These traits have brought me a long way. But I have my own problems. And my own problems have to do with anxiety and depression.. And things have gone really bad before.. And even now, it is still not that easy. The point I want to make is that everyone has weaknesses. In recognizing our own weaknesses, we could sympathize with others' weaknesses even though they are different from yours. Also most importantly we should not let our own weaknesses stop us from achieving our dreams..Weaknesses are just something we have to overcome in life. Seeking help, from professionals or from friends, is a way of finding out how we could overcome weaknesses. In short I think the most important thing is to recognize one's weaknesses and be motivated in trying to find ways to overcome them.

But by doing yoga and other psychological therapy, your neurochemistry may be changed. That is how cognitive behavioural and mindfulness therapies work. I think in the end, your neurochemistry needs to be changed in order for the therapy to have an effect. But using drugs are not the only way to change your neurochemistry. I found it is a bit odd that you couldn't pick your supervisor. I think in most universities who you want to work with are up to you and the supervisors who wish to accept you. The best advice for finding a good supervisor is to ask current graduate students. Some supervisors are well known to be good supervisors among grad students whereas others are known for being super mean to graduate students.. Current grad students usually know who are good at supervising. Also ask about the style of supervising. Some supervisors are very hand off but you get little support from them. Others can help you a lot but may impose their ideas onto you.

Such a well written article on what doing a PhD is all about. Too bad that people start focus on the whether-PhD-worths-the-time debate or the PhD-earns-so-little-money talk again... That is not even the focus of the article

I am a girl. I would like to date a hard working and knowledgeable PhD guy like that rather than some small minded people who work in some companies just for money. People who do PhD are often curious people who are very passionate about learning. That alone I found very attractive.

This article makes me think there are only two kinds of people: entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs. And all entrepreneurs hate work at big companies... You see the problem? The article didn't recognize that there are variations about entrepreneurs and there are variations among big companies.

Can you expand a bit on how it has gotten worse over the years? How were you better at focusing before? How do you know it has gotten worse? I can imagine it may be especially frustrating if it is something that has been worsening over time.

This is a very good answer! I also want to add. Reference letters are extremely important! If you can get top researchers/professors to write you an awesome reference letters, your chance will be increased greatly! Another way is to contact the prof you are interested in working with directly and try to work with him/her. Many profs like to accept students who have already worked with them

I am not sure if it is relevant. The most famous Chinese dating show now has a channel on youtube and the show supports English subtitles. I just took a look at it. For courses, are you talking about undergraduate or graduate courses? Could you approach the profs directly and asking them if you could just sit in their classes? I did that and audited two graduate level courses this year... Whether you sit there or not doesn't really affect the profs in any way as long as there are seats in the class.. They are usually pretty fine with those things, especially given your condition.

This is a very interesting article!!!! I have been living alone for few months now.. My sleeping schedule starts to split into two equal halves of sleep!! I usually feel soo good after the second sleep.
