xerox13ster··on FTC announces "click-to-cancel" rule making it easier to cancel subscriptions
It's not worth the bits this line was printed to screen with.

Trump will do away with the FTC because it stands in the way of their goal of dismantling the executive administration. The only thing JD Vance supports about keeping Lina Khan is keeping her captured and institutionally bound so she cannot bring legislation forward against their agenda as a citizen.

I'm a software engineer that is tired of attempting to transition into the industry by taking adjacent jobs in tech. My decade long career has been defined by me taking a role on an IT/tech support team and finding ways to create software solutions for my work in order to demonstrate my engineering ability. This strategy has been unsuccessful aside from exposing me to software development at every layer of the stack with a large variety of disparate systems.

If you need a software engineer who's not going to shy away from any technology you put in front of her, I'm your gal.

xerox13ster··on Please Don't Make Me Download Another App
I'm extremely confused by your first statement. If I take out all the parenthethicals, I get:

"My idea of an operating system design, that all I/O must use capabilities."

Any OS feature is a capability. Time and date are not I/O. What does capability mean to you?

Then you go on to say that the built in language will allow definition of proxy capabilities "and the C programming language can also be used"

How exactly does the inclusion of C avoid invasion of privacy? What such invasions? How does the conclusion follow?

I am sincere, please help me make sense of what you are saying.

xerox13ster··on The True Weight of Medieval Weapons – Fact and Fiction
Bill Gates (in his younger, athletic days) could leap over an office chair from a standing position without touching the back of the chair, and was very proud of it.
xerox13ster··on A Tall Tale: Photograph of the Cardiff Giant (Ca. 1869)
I think this was the inspiration behind the name of the computer developed by Gordon, Cameron, and Joe MacMillan at Cardiff Electric in Halt and Catch Fire. IIRC Gordon loses his mind from stress and starts digging a huge hole in the backyard during a storm while telling his daughters the tall tale and that's how he decided to name it the Giant.

xerox13ster··on AGI is far from inevitable
No no no no no no stop stop stop stop stop. I can’t with this stuff, Jerry (emphasized as Rick Sanchez), you’re gonna drive me back into the cave of existential dread I crawled into in 2013 after discovering this the first time. Took me years to crawl out and I was obsessed with the Control Problem that entire time. Naively “secure” in the “knowledge” that AI researchers would need to solve the Control Problem before they considered it safe to develop AGI or anything that looks like it.

There’s been a roiling, churning pool of thought under the surface of my mind in the wake of GPT 3.5s release telling me Sam doesn’t care about the Control Problem and I’ve been good at ignoring it but no that cat is out of the bag.

If Roko is real, I think we have already failed at our attempts at appeasement and we are living in the hell simulation created to torture anyone who resisted or did not seek to help.

xerox13ster··on Bop Spotter
See I’m not sure that it is legal. If they are re-transmitting audio is being played in public over the Internet for potentially many thousands more people, I’m pretty sure the RIAA, the UMG, & the WMG would all have something to say about it.

xerox13ster··on Too much efficiency makes everything worse (2022)
Or we can stop acting like there’s only two options: living in wide-open fields with a clear horizon or the fucking walled city of Kowloon.

Also, you have the mindset of a typical anti-social coastal elite who thinks “oh no big deal we can just raise the cost of living for all the poor rural types by sticking on a tax because I want to go LARP as a Victorian manor lord. And people don’t bend to my every whim immediately or live exactly like me so I want to be in total control of the 50 miles around me.”

I thought I was the only one. I played so much FOMT on GBA that when I found Stardew Valley I was ecstatic because the dev added a bunch of QOL features I always wanted to add to FOMT.

The longer I played the less I enjoyed it and it’s hard to put my finger on. Music is great, gameplay is great, relationships are alright. Something always feels off though.

I blame the hard coded cooking aspect of the game tbh. And your animals can’t die. And you can’t save in the mines…

xerox13ster··on Shanghai's Automotive Metamorphosis
If that ends up being the case, then I hope it comes with a toggle so that it can be turned off and then most people realize how gauche it is in the way of a cell phone ringer to be broadcasting fake engine noise constantly, and then we realize for safety sake, both mental and physical, that cars should be bisected from other modes and the general public. Because we can’t deal with the noise, but we also can’t have silent vehicles rocketing through the streets, controlled by people texting with their ringers off
xerox13ster··on Moments in Chromecast's history
The standardized protocol already exists and it’s called DLNA which Chromecast initially cannibalized in its first release and then basically killed off every single other DLNA provider and app because they Sherlocked the feature into the Android operating system and to the Chrome browser.

Now that they are at risk of being split up for their monopoly, and as they lose an Antitrust case for their search monopoly, they are probably looking to kill off the Chrome brand because Chrome is how they entirely dominated the web, warping it to their standards and killing more open standards in favor of their Proprietary technology.

xerox13ster··on The Programmer's Brain (2021)
It's not often that clicking on a too-large-for-the-viewport image with small text makes the text smaller and harder to read.

For some strange reason it was assumed that if you clicked the image, you wanted the image to shrink to fit in the viewport without any sort of zoom, readability be damned. Instead of zooming in on the image to reduce cognitive load.

My brain responds in a predictable way when I encounter visual anti-patterns such as this: I close the page.

I would have thought that little black designer dress was correct. Designer little black dress feels incorrect. The L and BL in Little and black and then the Ds in designer and dress also lend an alliterative flow to “little black designer dress” that is not there for “designer little black dress”

That's what I meant when I said they would be given the data in a mostly unusable format because Google wasn't told _how_ to export the data by the law.

When they shut down GPM I requested my listening data via Takeout and it was in a format that was absolutely useless to me. OP seemed to be in Germany so Google has been told by the law to allow data exfiltration, but as we've seen with Apple, these companies engage in malicious compliance and there's no guarantee that they'll get usable data from Takeout.

There's also no guarantee that over 18 years the EU regulatory bodies will remain uncaptured, and never reverse course on data controls such that Google could conceivably kill Takeout as a product due to "the excessive costs involved in supporting an organization wide data exfiltration tool"

Does the bullshit P&TO, Chinese-alphabet-soup-fake-brand-name of the enclosure matter that much? It was a Seagate Exos X4 drive inside the "branded" enclosure.

I consider Seagate to be a trustworthy brand, yet the one sent to me failed within two weeks and it had no shock absorption in the device at all.

When you buy rust drives on Amazon you are rolling the dice that you're going to get a drive that's been thrown around and could fail within two weeks.

That's the one! I remember seeing it air on TV in the cafe I worked at while I was watching the live blog reveal of the original Surface. LOL.

DO NOT BUY THAT (OR ANY) 12TB RUST DRIVE FROM AMAZON. I bought a 12TB drive same day delivery so I could blow away my 1.4TB home folder with no qualms about slowly reclaiming what I need/use from the backup for a month before I "freeze" the data on a shelf.

Instead of copying my library to my shiny Boox Note Air 2 and playing with my new toy, I spent Sunday hovering over an rsync transfer, cork tapping the spindle when it started clicking and grinding after having it for less than two weeks.

If that was the campaign they ran for the Google+ Photos feature launch in 2012 (when they released Photos before making it standalone in 2015), the other part is that the campaign encouraged people to take pictures of their very young children in order to catalog their life.

Then, their Google+ architecture allowed random people not part of the family group to view said photos of people's very young children, and it got a round in the tech news cycle. They started tightening up the architecture and in the process decoupled it from the dying Google+ to go on to release it in 2015.
