xchaotic··on 50 Years of Pascal and Delphi Is in Power
Things changed very quickly. I was writing a warehouse management app around 2000 and my first version was in Delphi. The sql components did require additional install and libraries. But v2 was in PHP and served over the Internet as that could run with no client install whatsoever- just a browser. It was much easier to manage the dependencies on my side and not worry about customer antivirus blocking the install etc.
xchaotic··on Brazil’s mismanagement of Covid-19 threatens the world
We’re screwed until covid becomes endemic like flu is now, where vaccines are optional. Brazil just accelerates the process.
xchaotic··on The absolute worst scenario happened
wow, it was so much better before. What the heck? Who made the decision to switch?
xchaotic··on The absolute worst scenario happened
while I agree that this is common in Europe, if the company ceases to exist, what good is the 3 months notice for the employee? If he/she has any options, I'd leave asap and not worry about amicable terms with a soon to be non-existent entity.
xchaotic··on The absolute worst scenario happened
has anyone figured out who the company is by now? Surely there must be some reports of the outage by now?
xchaotic··on Backblaze is now a Terraform provider
If you have some umm other useful tips for that 100% uptime let the rest of the world know. I am more happy with realistic and upfront statements from B2 than some wishful thinking from potential users.
xchaotic··on NFTs: Crypto grifters try to scam artists, again
Just focus on the content - NFTs are a scam - putting a pointer to something on a blockchain doesn't not add value and burns a lot of fossil fuels in the process of proving that 1=1.
xchaotic··on The world will only get weirder
I had a job once where we eventually determined that frictionless commerce is not a good goal. With no rules, taxes, fees etc no money can be extracted at various points of the supply chain. You want just the right amount of friction to keep economy going. Otherwise you get 1 rich Bezos and a billion people too poor to afford buying from him.
xchaotic··on How I started believing in Cycle Time over Estimation
Yeah, I think the problem the OP overlooked is that most of the cycle time was taken by various internal company processes and these are really not novel every time therefore it takes a similar amount of time to deliver different features. This in my mind is simply called estimation.
xchaotic··on Vertical farming does not save space
Not solving it unless you solve the other problems such as where the energy comes from how do you deal with waste where do you get the water from.
xchaotic··on Vertical farming does not save space
Surely it is easier and cheaper to make the land arable or a greenhouse or whatever than equivalent vertical farm + solar. KISS
xchaotic··on Open source chess developers warn about a commercial engine based on Stockfish
This is a natural consequence of releasing an open source project. It’s the equivalent of leaving a car open with a key, documents and an invitation to drive it for free.
xchaotic··on Why the upgrade cycle will never end (2015)
Well that’s when he can Stop buying a new Mx Mac. Until then M1 is more power efficient than x86 so more battery life etc.
xchaotic··on Using computer vision to help win $1M in Mountain Dew's Super Bowl contest
The AWS bill is $2 milion
xchaotic··on A few thoughts (about programming)
Notes from a senior programmer to a younger self (or another junior programmer).
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
perhaps you're looking at US? Generally I see a trend of people moving back to the countryside as remote work is by default now. London, UK is pretty empty too - all the restaurants and offices closed - means all the food that used to be consumed inside the city is now eaten somewhere in the commuter belt. That's a major shift...
xchaotic··on Launch HN: Opstrace (YC S19) – open-source Datadog
This is an interesting perspective. Our current monitoring system charges by the amount of data ingested / stored so there is a perverse incentive to observe less men if we have detailed debug level logs available.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
"By the year 2025, 63% of the world’s population will be living in cities" I wonder if Covid will revise those trends. Where I live (rural), there's plenty of unused land that needs a lot let contortions to farm (cheaper) but is indeed further away from the mouths to be fed in cities. How is the math behind urban farms vs simply shipping food into the city?
xchaotic··on Apple silicon M1 as-a-Service
Can anyone recommend a database that already works on the M1 chips?
xchaotic··on Apple silicon M1 as-a-Service
I signed up to test this and they are already out of capacity. I hope they can keep ordering more quickly...
xchaotic··on Replacing Dropbox in favor of DigitalOcean spaces
Looks like the brother just does the merges? (which are mostly automatic) so IMO best it matters because it's still mostly a one man, or at least a one family operation - i.e not very resilient to random acts of nature (which backups are supposed to protect from)
xchaotic··on Ubiquiti Networks Breach
would be good to see more argument behind this?
xchaotic··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses in 2021?
I hope it’s not off topic but it seems to show that one person businesses are probably not the way to go for most people- you will have a much more predictable income in a larger organisation and on average you will be better off financially too. Anyone telling you otherwise is probably a VC trying to make you work for them (or fail competing against them)
xchaotic··on The Ultimate MacBook+PC Monitor Showdown
I ended up getting a KVM in the middle - it’s more cables but I have a 144Hz gsync screen and I can easily swap kB+m+screen with a dedicated, hardware button
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What are you surprised isn’t being worked on more?
when you think it through, it's simply better to keep heat/electricity usage to a minimum, and just keep stuff better insulated overall. And I would say this area of problems is still being worked on, but you know physics gets in the way, and iterating in housing is a lot slower than software...
xchaotic··on Hallucinations re: the rendering of Cyberpunk 2077
FWIW, I got hit by cars a lot in my cyberpunk playthrough. Fits the dystopian narrative I guess, but even in a dystopia people worry about scratching their car or an insurance nightmare so not too realistic experience.

Other than the game is very enjoyable on a PC, with some really enjoyable NPC action, interesting side quests and a great main story line. Also a great value compared to buying a movie or going to the cinema for a similar price - so far sunk 50h into the game.

xchaotic··on Google outage – resolved
youtube / gmail down in Central Europe too
xchaotic··on Cloudflare working on Cloudflare Pages, for deploying and hosting JAMstack
I've played around with JAMstack - I've used Gatsby + Netlify to host/deploy a static site generator. It works surprisingly well and has lot of JS based feature you wouldn't expect from a 'static' site like forms, uploads etc.

but I feel that as it matures, there are no prizes to being an early adopter - it looks like it's getting better and easier to use and a lot of features that you had to code for in the past become configurations. So I am still in 'wait and see mode'.

xchaotic··on How 700 Epidemiologists Are Living Now, and What They Think Is Next
Tl;dr it will take a lot longer than most people expect to get back to ‘normal’. Summer 2021 being normal is a maybe at best.
xchaotic··on After losing my savings as an indie hacker, I can't do it anymore. I quit.
I'm glad it's out there - for most people, the 'boring' software dev career at a larger tech company is better off financially at critical junctions in your life and often lets you solve more challenging/advanced problems as compared to doing accounting/sales/pm/hr/dev work all by yourself. I've been following an ex-googler who reached $30k in revenue after two years (total), compared to his previous salary+options of around $225k/year. But most importantly you're not stressed out as much.
