two things kill it for me - annual commitment - I'm just playing around and I have so many options to choose from without the commitment.
Mind you, we're spending $10k+ on AWS right now, but it all started with a free tier.
Another thing is we're based in Europe and you only have servers in the US.
Good luck in the ultra competitive market.
but why would you pay for the protocol and bother with switching, if you have a good-enough solution with free protocols and paying for services with ad money.
Sorry to sound so negative, but the closed ecosystem for this is a very bad fit for encouraging young people to code.
They won't be able to share it amongst themselves, share to other devices such as smartphones etc.
There clearly is a gap in the market and someone with enough resources could come up with an ecosystem that let's young people code in a simplified environment and share those results.
in fact there's quite a few of such initiatives, it's just that they are lacking in terms of embracing many modern devices and latest trends such as sharing via github etc.
tbf, Jobs may have been a business visionary etc, but given that every hour of his life was x-rayed by various biography writers and journalists and he was not much of a family man - spending so much time at work. So we should not follow his parenting advice just based on the fact that he was a good businessman. Not that excessive iPad use is good for anyone, just consider it for the right reasons and not because Jobs said something once.
you still have to go from bare metal in someone else's DC to having you software running on top of it, who's going to do all that config work? You're spending resources either way.
sorry but rather phoning home to verify entitlement, it will now have to sync the WHOLE blockchain (probably ASYNC but still). You're mixing two similar problem, and brute forcing things is not going to work for things like topping up a car.
It's nice in an utopian kind of way, but it's actually less efficient - i.e. more costly overall. So you're talking Facebook paying for their hosting by showing ads vs you trying to charge customers real money or slow down their computers. I have a guess which one is going to prevail.
it's a very noble approach, but the facts are not in your favour. The 'people' that keep bitcoin valuation high are: early adopters (including ones who lost access to their wallets), HODLers and speculators and perhaps a few casual drug buyers. As a mainstream currency, BTC is pretty useless at world scale.
You can see something similar in Caracas, Venezuela, where people live in unfinished skyscrapers. There's no lifts nor official electricity and there are grocery shops every nth floor with prices growing as everything is delivered on foot.
is it possible to sign up for GDAX instead of coinbase if you don't have a US based company?
I'd much prefer programmatic access and coinbase hardly ever works at times like these...
There is an interview with the new CEO saying that they have a formal review process for adding new 'currencies' and BCH is simply first in line.
Having many cryptos adds legitimacy, whether there is one underneath or not..
THey can say oh BTC, BCH, LTC all crashed, but ETH only crashed by 150% so cryptocurrencies are still viable (even when they are not)
Thank you, very interesting example, but I don't necessarily see the added value in the graph form, for this particular example - it implies dependencies where there are none - for example buying GBP only after buying the guide book etc.
I think it is just the example that is wrong. What's typical for a holiday break, is a todo list, which is in no particular order.
Perhaps an actual project would be a better example?
So that's in the past and now we have a cryptocurrencies bubble coming up.
Who should be punished and why?
Here there is no intermediary, just the greed of the people and their stupidity.
Let the markets punish or reward them.
I subconsciously read that title as: "From Code Cowboy to Architecture Astronaut".
Realistically you want to be somewhere in the middle, DRY and all, but ship your product often, first of all.
The 1000x comparison is silly - in a straight up lifting of things, a simple steel wire can probably lift 100000x times it's weight.
The tech has it's uses and they should highlight the flexibility rather than perceived strength...
Sorry for the obvious plug, but if one wants solid replication, ACID compliance and a few other 'enterprisey' features, you should try MarkLogic: https://developer.marklogic.com/products
I feel like we got a lot more things right ;)
Other than price it would be good to hear, if people agree and what's missing still.
So glad this is on the front page of HN. A good 30% of perf problems for our clients are low level misconfigurations such as this.
For databases:
huge pages - good
THP - bad
This is true, but they issued all forms of debt already - shares, bonds, you name it.
Any further delays and they can literally go bankrupt.
And this is physical manufacturing do you can't ship beta and fix later for most things.
Also many have vested interests to see them fail - short traders, other car manufacturers, oil industry. I wouldn't rule out a simple sabotage - seems fairly low risk if it means oil industry can keep extracting profits for 10 years longer.
Would the compression work better if you inlined the SVG and served the whole HTML+SVG as one gzipped file?
I also think that depending on the SVG complexity, you might shave a few bits, but at the expense of more complex processing - polygon-path vs two square in this example...
The weird part is that even with higher salary, I wouldn't recommend people to go on h1b.
Job flexibility, healthcare, work/life balance all sacrificed in the name of workin in America!
" The vast majority of humanity as a whole is just not capable of sitting down and chewing through a deep learning textbook or anything of the sort." they don't currently, and probably we don't need millions of data science major, but somehow grinding through the game for thousands of hours is doable. I'd say let's gamify learning and we will have a whole new supply of world class scientist streaming their research on sci-twitch.tv ;)
This is very much like sports - very few make it to the top, and it's kind of subsidised by the ones coming up or just idly watching.
Unlike actual sport, the disciplines here change rapidly, in spite of Blizzard's best efforts, World of Warcraft numbers are rapidly dwindling so a WoW start will pretty much have to start from scratch in another game or quit streaming as a career move.
Game developers or even petty missteps can have disastrous consequences for streamers. Game developers can, for example ban streaming altogether, or request takedown with their content selectively.
This is a 'career' but with no major prospects and if one was to put equivalnet amount of time in another field, say learning how deep learning works, the rewards will be far greater on average.
I also think that 'pro' streamers no longer enjoy the games they play for "18 hours a day" and can't afford casual games with the camera turned off. It's a huge 'big brother' in their lives.
