xchaotic··on Why Didn’t Denmark Sell Greenland?
agreed. A long term lease would be acceptable to both sides, but at this point there's no such offer as US already has a presence there, much cheaper.
xchaotic··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
AFAIK that's not enough calories burned to get you into caloric deficit. You need more intensive or longer exercise
xchaotic··on Microsoft bans free Slack and discourages AWS and Google Docs use internally
They don't have such a product yet
xchaotic··on Information is like snacks, money, and drugs to the brain
How would you decide what to block? Wikipedia or Stack Overflow can be extremely useful but you can waste time there as easily as on Facebook, Twitter or Hacker News.
xchaotic··on Why Monzo's bank transfers weren't working on the 30th of May
Yes, I used Transfer Wise borderless card in the US in 2017
xchaotic··on Tokyo's suburban housing became vast ghettoes for the old
A very good example of the negative effects of reversing a good social policy (universal social housing)
xchaotic··on Tokyo's suburban housing became vast ghettoes for the old
Why? It's just artificial money, what's the concrete negative impact? (I probably agree, I just think it needs to be concrete and justified)
xchaotic··on When we work out rigorously, our bodies limit our ability to expend energy
Just Google for it from an incognito session to get the full article. I quoted the gist of the research in the other post but here goes: Because there's a limit to how much a human body can eat a day, body also regulates how many calories the body can burn in a day. So you can do one day where you burn more than 6000kcal but any more days and 6k is the rough limit, even if you run a full marathon. Body adapts, but it also doesn't let you burn too many calories over consecutive days.
xchaotic··on When we work out rigorously, our bodies limit our ability to expend energy
"runners were expending about two and a half times their resting metabolic rate each day, a notable decline from the early days of the event, when they were burning at least three and a half times their resting rate"

Not sure why they call the findings surprising. Body builders have known that since before Schwarzenegger.

Body adapts and then you have to change the routine.

For long distance runners HIIT or just short, intense workout would be the obvious answer to up the metabolism again.

xchaotic··on On Dat
Too complicated for very little gain.
xchaotic··on DJI RoboMaster S1
My kids went through Sphero, Mindstorms and a couple of other robots where you can program them in Scratch and similar. To me such a toy would have been a godsend. They got bored pretty quickly.

Another issue is that gimbal adds to video quality but also to cost.

Finally with the hype, I was expecting a nice ready to fly FPV drone.

So I'm a bit meh about this toy.

xchaotic··on I’m not saving ninety percent of my income for myself
If she wants to make good use of the money, why wait? The longer they're hoarding it, the longer it stays away from people who need it.
xchaotic··on Facebook plans cryptocurrency debut
I'm sorry but you're just muddying the water here - Facebook's currency is centralised by both Facebook and peg to USD and there's no need for interoperability at the currency level - Facebook will provide the APIs for working with the currency. As envisioned by Facebook, the whole 'crypto' aspect of it is pointless.
xchaotic··on Peloton Confidentially Files Statement for Proposed IPO
I really struggle as a potential investor in this (after IPO).

The business is real and lucrative and profitable. This is already so much better than say Uber. But the equities market demands perpetual growth and I'm not seeing enough audience for this in the future, who have not already bought it. In other words I feel it would be a very nice private company but it might struggle a bit as a public one.

xchaotic··on Sorry, keto fans, you're probably not in ketosis (2018)
So what's a good alternative for burning fat that you already have? I am in a caloric deficit and do long exercises to burn fat but I'm not sure if it actually works - my weight is down a bit but it usually is in the spring anyway
xchaotic··on Binance moves $1.26B worth of Bitcoin for $125 in network fees
App stores and various middlemen like Uber getting a cut funded a lot of tech innovations and SV fortunes, I wouldn't say low fees are absolutely best. In this case though, the fees are mostly spent on electricity and are rather large for a single transfer.
xchaotic··on WhatsApp users will start seeing in-app ads within ‘Status’ feature from 2020
Why can't they just carry on charging people like they used to. Greed + middle management stupidity.

Someone at Facebook is proud of their smartness and will probably get a title like Senior Manager for messaging advertising.

The trouble with switching IM is that everyone needs to switch as well.

xchaotic··on On SQS
"In cases where latency is of primary concern, don't use SQS"
xchaotic··on Half of US stock fund assets are now invested in index funds
It would then still seem sensible to invest in an index fund for now. Until we find that equilibrium
xchaotic··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
what's a good way for vim to have that when you ssh into a remote box? Would you do the rebinding in the Terminal app or something, agent forwarding or something similar? I ssh into newly provisioned boxes regularly to edit some config files so I'd need something that works not just locally...
xchaotic··on Mass grave in Poland embodies the violent beginning of the Bronze Age
Unfortunately Poland still is positioned in an area where enemy can come from any direction (and they have - Russia, Germany, Austira, Sweden etc) and it sucks geopolitically.
xchaotic··on Study Finds Ultra-Processed Foods Drive Weight Gain
Basically processed food is much more dense in calories so you can easily eat more calories than you need. You'd have to eat a lot of vegetables and salad to get calories. The study is new, but the conclusion is ' hacker diet' - people eating processed food ate more calories than they burned so they gained weight.

If you want to lose weight just burn more calories than you eat.

Usually the easiest solution is a mix of better diet and some moderate exercise regime that burns some calories and increases your metabolism.

xchaotic··on Amazon S3 Path Deprecation Plan – The Rest of the Story
It's not that simple, unfortunately - it won't work for the old dotted addresses and S3 is not HTTP
xchaotic··on Red Hat Universal Base Image
Yeah, I think they'll struggle with adoption over the existing docker ecosystem and they should not be introducing such barriers just yet.
xchaotic··on Estimating Number of Jupyter Notebooks on Github
Python Notebooks will the be the PERL of 2010s - write once, pretty impossible to maintain long term
xchaotic··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
Why would I want to be at the end of the food chain, owning a money losing taxi company? What's unique to Lyft, are there at least signs of profitability given the pressure from competition?
xchaotic··on ‘AWS vs. K8s’ Is the New ‘Windows vs. Linux’
The title doesn't cover the nuance so please go ahead and RTFM. The argument is that Kubernetes is like Linux was some time ago - for geeks and hackers who spent the extra time and dealt with the annoyances and bugs because Linux offered something to them that Windows did not: "Some liked to tinker, some wanted an OS to be ‘free’, some wanted more control over their software, some wanted a faster system, but all had some niche reason to justify the effort."

The argument then goes that K8S is a bit Linux was back then - harder to use but ultimately more rewarding, more open in the long run and you avoid lock-in. The other side of this is that userland ecosystem for K8S is a bit of a mess - not sure how to solve that, currently, without reinventing OpenShift.

xchaotic··on Mobile data: Why India has the world's cheapest
How is 8GB/mo LTE a good deal? Theoretically you should be able to use your allowance in minutes (or it's not really LTE)
xchaotic··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
Have you ever been to Australia where iron ore is less than 1 meter below ground?
xchaotic··on TLDR Stock Options
Then negotiate a higher salary which is the statistically correct course of action. Many of my colleagues are 10+ years stuck waiting for an IPO that may never come.
