xcavier··on Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion
This attitude really bugs me:

> Zuckerberg said Facebook will reduce salaries for people who move to cheaper places >

If company X moves manufacturing to a lower cost company, it doesn't suddenly discount its product. The CEO's mindset is: if I can provide the same value for a lower cost, I get to pocket the additional (saved) margin.

But when an employee provides the same value but at a lower (personal) cost, the boss wants to clawback the savings.

xcavier··on Connected, but at what cost?
I think you’re missing the point: deleting Fb meant they had to make more of an effort to know what their friends were up to, which resulted in more offline interactions.

The WHO is warning there is no proof that having recovered from an infection actually makes you immune
xcavier··on Show HN: A simple storage pricing calculator for AWS
The fact that a 3rd party feels the need to publish a calculator suggests it is not ‘simple’
xcavier··on Der Spiegel: Are we witnessing the implosion of a superpower?
Not sure where you get your news from, but clearly you need to read more widely about what is actually happening on the ground in the US...
xcavier··on Covid-19 Fatalities Dashboard
Ironic how these dashboards beautifully reflect / visualise data, yet it is widely agreed that the underlying data is largely suspect.
xcavier··on The Low Prices vs. Bargains Dilemma
Wow. So much subjective.

I’ve been impressed with their approach and how they make improving privacy easier

xcavier··on A Quiet Evening’s Reading: ‘Notable British Trials’
‘Not guilty’ does not mean innocent. It means only that the prosecution has failed to prove the accused’s/defendant’s guilt to the requisite standard of proof.
xcavier··on A dietary supplement makes old mice youthful, but will it work in people?
There are quite a few supplements that operate to boost NAD+ levels.

The one I take personally is https://www.iherb.com/pr/Thorne-Research-Niacel-250-Nicotina...

For general background on the science + nutrition approaches, see https://www.selfhacked.com/blog/nad-important-increase/

We don't need employees any more. We just need semi competent people who half understand something. Instead of working for money, 'employees' can do it for the sake of contributing.
xcavier··on Reasons why I will not be replying to your argument
Brilliant
xcavier··on Glamorous tech startups can be brutal places for workers
Yes and no. Facebook had tried mobile and failed, and there was clear fear it could not cross the chasm from desktop web to mobile web/app.

Instagram was 'born' mobile, and Facebook was very motivated to ingest their thinking/culture/skills.

xcavier··on Why Apple Wants to Get into the Unprofitable World of Payments Between Friends
It could be you're missing the big picture.

Margin on a single transaction? >x%

Building out the already STUPENDOUS iTunes database of payment credentials?

Priceless.

Yes, low margin while you attack the beachhead. Once you secure that, and apply the 'We're Apple' reality distortion in order to wrangle standards that you control... Money magic happens.

xcavier··on The sad economics of being famous on the internet
This issue isn't new. It was very prevalent in Web 1.0 world.

At the time, I opined something rather harsh:

If your business model relies on free [read: freemium] services, you have a hobby, not a business.

It remains true today.

xcavier··on Lessig Ends Presidential Campaign
Spoken like an academic.

He was never a serious contender. His angle was as an independent agitator.

Ralph Nader was never a chance, but he changed America based on his campaign tactics (which I personally disagreed with - he split the Democratic vote).

Lessig needs a dose of 'junkyard dog'.

This setback could have been the fillip a better, more aggressive candidate would welcome.
