The approachable/playful writing style makes it so much more engaging for me. It's refreshing to see some of this stuff explained in a conversational and enthusiastic manner. Obviously, just personal taste.
xbryanx··on iPhone 7
I know this is a minority use case, but my iPhone is a great tool for testing whether audio equipment is working or not when I'm doing media system installs. Simply plug in the iPhone and play some sounds. Alas...
xbryanx··on Show HN: A Multiplayer Geography Game Using WebSockets
Addictive and fun. The timing on the turns is just right. If you're looking for feedback, I'd suggest putting the leaderboard up and to the right on bigger screens. I had to keep scrolling down in between turns to see how I was doing.

Also, several times it didn't register my clicks and I have to try a few times before it worked.

I'm excited to try this out. It'll be fun to compare to some of the data I get by using RescueTime[1].

xbryanx··on Why Do Islands Induce Dwarfism?
Aspects of this island evolution were part of the plot in the marvelously detailed sci-fi book from Kim Stanley Robinson: Aurora.

TLDR: Interstellar multi-generation spaceships are essentially genetic islands.

We still buy a few CRT monitors from time to time (museum field) and get them from Dotronix. Not cheap, but you can get big ones:

Could you provide an example or two of the sites that will be impacted, and how it will effect an average user? I'm not that familiar with this area.

xbryanx··on Show HN: Passbolt – open-source password manager for teams
I love the experience of using 1Password, and use it for my personal work and family.

Thanks for posting this, because the last time I had looked at 1Password for teams it didn't meet all the features of LastPass. I'll give it another look.

xbryanx··on Show HN: Passbolt – open-source password manager for teams
I'm so glad to see movement in this direction. I work on a team with lots of non-technical people who need to share passwords and secure information, and store their own private bits. So we use LastPass. It's the only thing that works for us, but man does it need some competition. It makes me sad several times a month.

I would love to be able to move away from their central repository and host our own solution with something like this. I just hope that any user testing is being done with some non-techies who don't know or care what a PGP key is.

It would be very interesting to include technology workers in non-profit organizations alongside for-profit corps and startups.

I'd pay (once) for software that periodically ran on my computer, pinging a URL for a price, tracking it locally, and giving me an alert at a change threshold.

xbryanx··on Introducing CloudFlare Registrar: Designed for Security, Not the Masses
I bet that product is more expensive than we think. They can only afford to offer this as a feature of their enterprise product. But as a standalone offering I'm guessing it would cost more ($300-500?) than most people would be willing to pay for registration. Just speculating.

xbryanx··on Pull request acceptance of women versus men
[Edit] Retracting my comment below, after the parent comment was edited to provide more context.

This quote doesn't seem representative of the whole story that is easily discoverable in the abstract.

> Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless.

xbryanx··on The cost of transpiling ES2015 in 2016
Yes, I am a big fan of checking in the build directory. We work on lots of little one-off apps that need to last for 5-8 years. Having the build dir in the version control makes it so much easier to fix things and update content years down the road. It insures us from things like npm (insert your package manager here) going away. Which I know sounds ridiculous, but try to re-download some essential Flash/Actionscript library from 2009, in 2016.
xbryanx··on Ubuntu for tablets
This is so awesome.

But the BQ Aquaris M10 still has a low resolution, compared to what most tablet users have come to expect. I deeply wish there were open source small (~10" diag.) high PPI touch displays outside of iOS or Android devices.

xbryanx··on Viewer.js – JavaScript image viewer
Might be cool, but I closed my tab immediately. I work on an open team with quite a few women and other folks who would immediately react negatively to the sexy Emma Watson example photos. Bring on the downvotes, but even if this is an irrational negative reaction, it's a real one. If you want this to be a useful and universal library consider your example images. If you want it to be used only by people who aren't bothered by this, then plow straight ahead.

xbryanx··on David Bowie, an Internet pioneer
It's scary to think about how ephemeral some of these early internet experiments are. Wayback Machine is great for static sites, but I'm amazed that enough of this interactive media/software was captured to even report on. I hope that the Bowie camp has some smart archivists who will preserve this unique material.

xbryanx··on The Sad State of Personal Knowledgebases
This. As a near 40 person, I now need to search in 5-10 places for that thing I know I wrote down in Markdown, Vim Notes, Workflowy, Tiddlywiki, 1Password, Confluence, or email at some point in the last 20 years. But maybe we just need to give up on finding one tool to store them all. Instead we need to build more federated search across all these platforms. That way I can have one searcher that returns results all my various old "brains."
