xbryanx··on The Nightmare Scenario for Florida’s Coastal Homeowners
You haven't gotten to the chapter where the retaining wall is breached in the 2nd wave/pulse yet have you?

xbryanx··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
"There used to be a time when we as a society valued things like self-control, discipline, and tradition. No more."

What evidence do you have for this fantasy? The extremely high number of children per family/couple before contraception came along?

xbryanx··on A linguist on Arrival's alien language (2016)
It was interesting to read up more on the Hopi Language Controversy and see how Ekkehart Malotki demonstrated that the Hopi do have a wealth of time related vocabulary.

xbryanx··on Triple Flaw in Nest's Dropcam
Aren't most of those cables either buried in the ground, or 12 feet up in the air?
xbryanx··on LastPass RCE vulnerability fixed
It's always worth remembering that using something like LastPass should be compared with the status quo that it often fixes (same password for everything, post-it notes, teams emailing passwords around).

xbryanx··on Show HN: Nomouse
Our tedious accounting/PO system operated via a VM connection to a Win 7 system from a Mac.
xbryanx··on A deep dive into why Wi-Fi kind of sucks
What software tools do people use (OS X, Linux, Windows) to test out and debug wifi connections?
xbryanx··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
I'm getting the same outage in us-west-2 right now.
xbryanx··on Fasting leads to stress resistance, self-renewal, and regeneration (2014)
I think that people overlook the social barriers to adopting even intermittent fasting. My partner (a doctor) thinks it's bonkers and dislikes it when I want to skip meals that we would normally share (family dinner). That's not an insurmountable barrier, but combined with nights out with friends, drinks after work, etc...my fasting routine can get worn down nothing after a few weeks. I hope as the health benefits get popularized, we see some cultural shifts that make it more acceptable in social settings and family structures.
xbryanx··on Realtime Analysis of the Oroville Dam Disaster
Those are the most informative pictures of the situation I've seen yet.
xbryanx··on How companies should treat their most enthusiastic customers
Similar to the IBM story. the principles resonate across different consumer types.
xbryanx··on Things Every Hacker Once Knew
Just about every professional display or projector has a RS-232 control interface. In arenas, museums, airports, restaurants, any place you see higher end digital signage, you'll likely see a RS-232 serial cable connected to the display device for control and maintenance.
xbryanx··on Pplapi: A virtual database of the entire human population
It was not at all clear to me. I spent some time navigating the site and believed at first that it was just anonymized real data. Using the word "synthetic" and something like "these are not real people" on the front page would go a long way towards explaining the purpose and intent of this project.
xbryanx··on Amazon Polly – Lifelike Text-To-Speech
I'm curious what some of the industrial or business use cases are for a service like this. I'm not saying there aren't any, I just wonder who this scratches and itch for.
xbryanx··on Dark Patterns – User Interfaces Designed to Trick People [video]
Where do we draw the line between "dark patterns" and "smart design?" I feel like the Hacker News community could be advocating for a persuasive pricing page design one day and decrying its dark design pattern the next. The obviously evil patterns are easy to avoid, but it's difficult to distinguish between appropriately persuasive and inappropriately manipulative in the grey-middle.
xbryanx··on No Spanking, No Time-Out, No Problems
If you're implementing the 'positive reinforcement over negative' approach into your life, it's important to trust the large body of research that demonstrates its effectiveness. Be skeptical of your own internal perception of its effects. I find that when I'm working to make positive reinforcement work, the outlier failures stand out so much larger in my mind. I struggle to understand that it's working in the long run despite my infrequent emotional reactions of anger, frustration, failure, etc.

There's some fascinating reading on the cognitive biases that are at play here in Daniel Kahneman's Thinking, Fast and Slow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinking,_Fast_and_Slow

xbryanx··on Show HN: Reorganize pixels of a painting into a smooth color palette using PCA
I do, only because it's from the institution that actually owns the real painting. Museums try pretty hard to get colors right on the digital images that they put online. And since the project is about color, it seems like an important detail. Thanks for being open to my nitpicking. Very cool project.
xbryanx··on Show HN: Reorganize pixels of a painting into a smooth color palette using PCA
The colors in that image seem super bright compared to the original.

xbryanx··on The People's Code
The work to open source something is often extra work. So it would effectively increase the cost or, keeping costs fixed, reduce the impact of the software on it initial target...those who it was developed for.

I also imagine that in many cases the effort to open source some project would be much greater than the pay off. There are many custom software solutions developed that are of almost no value outside of the small domain specific target audience.

xbryanx··on New MacBook Pro Is Not a Laptop for Developers Anymore
I'm always confused by the interface outrage from hard core devs around new laptops. As a dev, I spend the absolute minimum time possible developing by interfacing with my MacBook itself. 98% of the time I'm plugged into a mechanical keyboard, giant monitors, and a real sound system. My MacBook sits to the side and only gets touched when I'm on an airplane or a meeting.
xbryanx··on Apple giveth, and Apple taketh away – the Escape key
I have the CAPS LOCK mapped to the escape key, which is great for Vim, etc. However, there's one weird edge case problem. In After Effects the CAPS LOCK is the one quick way to speed up rending of animations, by disabling the render to screen option. It's oddly hard coded to that key specifically and seems difficult to remap to anything else. I know I probably represent 1 of 10 people world-wide who have this problem, but I'm sure there are other odd things hard mapped to the sad ol' CAPS LOCK key.
xbryanx··on Open Guide to Amazon Web Services
Wow, the link to http://www.ec2instances.info/ alone is so helpful. I wish I'd had this set of resources a year ago when I spent weeks trying to understand AWS' own documentation.
xbryanx··on Ask HN: What do you use for Log Management?
Moving several systems over to the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana).
xbryanx··on Backpage Raided, CEO Arrested on Sex-Trafficking Charges
It's important to understand that this arrest is happening in concert with a major operation to disrupt sex trafficking rings outside of Backpage specifically.

http://www.startribune.com/feds-to-announce-bust-of-global-s...

Neither article mentions specific coordination, but considering the arrests happened on the same day, I'm imagining that there must have been some coordination in the investigations.

xbryanx··on Google Noto Fonts
This is really fantastic. It sent me looking for source materials for the character choices made for each language.

I'm dealing with a media experience in Dakota and Ojibwa right now where we have source material that is spelled/character-ed quite differently than the alphabet provided by Noto in those languages. Given the scale of this project, I assume that some considerable thought went into each language's character set, but it's difficult to know for sure without any sourcing. The git commit logs don't offer up any hints. Anyone familiar with the project, know where I could find this sort of source information?

Should I be referencing something in the Unicode definitions for these languages?

xbryanx··on Some bad Git situations and how I got myself out of them
Sure, it's harder to screw up. But, dang it's just so remarkably slow.

If you're used to the commands from the keyboard, where you're likely already typing from your editor...can't imagine going back to the GUI.
