xbryanx··on I have reached Vim nirvana
If you swing a steel head framing hammer for 20 years, and then discover the lighter titanium one, I guarantee it will feel like nirvana. Tools matter.
xbryanx··on Map of the observable universe
Explain it to me like I'm five:

Why can we only see 90° of the sky?

I look at the map at the bottom of the page and wonder why it isn't a circle. I'm obviously missing a key concept.

xbryanx··on 4.2 Gigabytes, Or: How to Draw Anything
Yes! We will still need new creatives to dream up something entirely new, which then can be fed into AI as new seeds. The cycle continues.
xbryanx··on Researchers: World can reach 100% renewable energy system by/before 2050
I like Vaclav Smil’s shorthand tool for assessing these claims. Be suspicious of any predicted year for full renewable rollout that ends in a zero or a five.
xbryanx··on Show HN: Terragen.dev – Automagically Generate Terraform for AWS
Plans to support GCP or other clouds?
xbryanx··on Why is American administrative capacity in decline?
This though experiment always gets stuck with the military and social security when I start to imagine this possibility. Not sure how you go about dividing those up.
xbryanx··on When everything is important but nothing is getting done
Yes, but there are things that are high risk enough that they must be addressed before they are urgent.
xbryanx··on I've used all the notebooks
So pleased to see the Leuchtturm 1917 dotted grid at the top of this list. It's been my go-to notebook for the last few years. It comes with some nice stickers for labeling so that you can find past notebooks on the shelf. Lots of colors are easily available on Amazon.

I wrap my latest notebook in a Coal Creek leather cover to look all fancy (and hold my phone and pen). https://www.coalcreekleather.com/collections/a5

xbryanx··on Actual is going open-source
This is awesome feedback and I appreciate your honesty. I will help so many remember what matters in their next ventures.

Check out Lunch Money[1] - Which feels more polished and supported to me.

xbryanx··on Please make a dumb car
I get why, but my Volvo (2017) WILL NOT let me lock the keys in the car. Which is annoying if I'm trying to safely warm it up on a -15 Minnesota day and have the spare keys in the house. There's lots of forums detailing tricks involving rolling the windows down or locking the car from the back seat. I love all the tech automation and safety features, but at times I find myself befuddled by the designers choices.
xbryanx··on Don't you lecture me with your thirty dollar website

xbryanx··on Learn accounting for free
This sounds like every interaction I've had asking a question in a plumbing/electrician forum. Oh, if you're asking that question your definitely going to poison your entire house with sewer gas and/or burn the place down with that wiring.
xbryanx··on Learn accounting for free
Where are you borrowing this money without any interest? "Money you borrow" and "cost to borrow that money" are rarely the same value.
xbryanx··on ImageMagick: CLI for Image Editing
Printer output?
xbryanx··on Silent Running: The sci-fi that predicted modern crises
This movie does not hold up. This is the second time I’ve seen this touted as an unheralded classic. Watch it if you need a nap! Phenomenally boring and ham handed.
xbryanx··on Nvidia Unveils GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs
How many spatulas does one family need though?!
xbryanx··on Show HN: Aviary.sh – A tiny Bash alternative to Ansible
I'm not sure if I am understanding this (aviary.sh) correctly, but it looks like this requires an agent to run on the configured hosts.

One of the things that I love about Ansible's model is that we never need an agent on the host. Once you configure something with Ansible, there's no artifact of the configuration left on the machine.

xbryanx··on Most detailed ever photograph of The Night Watch goes online
Why do you have to use derogatory language to describe Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring?
xbryanx··on An industry dedicated to making foods crispy
One of my favorite(only?) bits of sci-fi/food-engineering trivia is that Gene Wolfe (The Book of the New Sun) was the mechanical engineer who developed the machine that cooked the first Pringles chips:

xbryanx··on When did Americans lose their British accents?
If you want to know a whole lot more about this, I highly recommend the book "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways in America." It's a deep and long book, but super enjoyable and easy to read. It explains in much more nuance, the origins of various American accents and their roots in different historical British cultures.
xbryanx··on When to Overcommunicate
George Bernard Shaw probably didn't say that, "The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place." https://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/08/31/illusion/

The source of that aphorism is probably William H Whyte and is better understood with its context about listening.

"LET US RECAPITULATE A BIT: The great enemy of communication, we find, is the illusion of it. We have talked enough; but we have not listened. And by not listening we have failed to concede the immense complexity of our society–and thus the great gaps between ourselves and those with whom we seek understanding."

xbryanx··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work (2016)
It would be interesting to investigate this based on the subject’s climate and time of year.

Up here in Minnesota I could imagine doing this in the summer, but right now, when it’s grey and 18F outside, um no.

xbryanx··on JetBrains: $270M revenue, 405K paying users, $0 raised
These tools are not 100% free (as in beer) when you factor in your time. I spent years ($$) customizing my Vim setup and saved tons of time ($$) when I finally switched to IntelliJ with IdeaVim.
xbryanx··on Big Pile of Vim-Like
Missing from this list:

Vimium - Vim for Chrome Ideavim - Vim for IntelliJ/PyCharm/WebStorm

xbryanx··on Slack’s new WYSIWYG input box is terrible
I’m surprised at this. The latest cloud editing experience in Confluence (Cloud) is pretty great in my opinion.
xbryanx··on FireEye confirms APT41 hacked TeamViewer, may have accessed billions of devices
I've been looking at a combination of SoftEther (for dynamic IPs) and Guacamole to replace TeamViewer, ConnectWise, etc.
xbryanx··on Rsync, GUIs, power, control, design, and decisions
One of the main audiences for this GUI are people who maybe only ever use the CLI once a month/quarter and can’t even remember how to edit mid-line in the terminal. For them this GUI is a great idea.
xbryanx··on Floyd Martin retires after nearly 35 years as a mailman tomorrow
You can do that job, and have it be enormously beneficial to your family, friends, and neighbors.

Find those jobs.
