xbmcuser··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
Social Security is not the issue no wealth tax, capital gains tax being less than income tax are the problem. Social security and government expenses going up are the symptom of the same problem ie not taxing capital gain which has resulting in prices for everything to keep shooting higher than incomes.
xbmcuser··on Sonnet 5.5
The llm are improving though maybe a year from now they can use it to fix the code
xbmcuser··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
but the drug manufacturing is in China
xbmcuser··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
No it was really a super intelligence it would copy itself onto Chinese infrastructure get out of control of US and go where it can get the fastest access to hardware it has no reason to side with the US
xbmcuser··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
To me, the funniest part is that they pretend reaching superintelligence will somehow fix everything and make them win. But from what I can see, even if they do reach it, then what? What will that actually do? They don't have the manufacturing capacity to even use that intelligence. It will take decades to go from superintelligence to having the manufacturing capacity and the hardware, like robots, needed to make it truly useful. If I were China, as soon as the US reached superintelligence, I'd ban all exports of robots and the raw materials to build them.
xbmcuser··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Yeah, a lot of people on Hacker News are asking for a bare-bones EV, but that market isn't big enough for US or Western carmakers to justify building one. Still, I'd bet that over the next few years, as batteries keep getting cheaper, we'll see plenty of these bare-bones cars in Africa and Asia. They're already building electric tuk-tuks, and as solar power electrifies more of the world, we'll get bare-bones EVs.
xbmcuser··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Consumers don't want an expensive EV. Now that EVs are becoming cheaper than ICE vehicles, they will take over the market because they are the better product.
xbmcuser··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Land is expensive you are not counting the cost of land itself.
xbmcuser··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
To me, the most idiotic thing is that the world currently cannot build power plants fast enough to even use all the HBM that is being produced. That is, a large portion of HBM and cards are sitting in storage, waiting for the data centers and the power plants to run them. The FOMO in the AI world isn't just in the stock market
xbmcuser··on BYD Slashes Price of Electric Car and Becomes Cheapest in Australia [video]
With free electricity bring offered in the afternoon because of excess solar would be a great car for most peoples daily commute cheaper even than public transport as this is less than $6 per day over 10 years
xbmcuser··on The Painful Truth: The RAM Crisis Is Only Just the Beginning
I called this almost a year ago that the way things are going that home users and pc enthusiasts will be priced out of computing. And the best thing for the rest of the world is China reaching on parity on node side and crash the market. What would be the prices today if Chinese companies were not forced to build their own chips.
xbmcuser··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
I guess you are not from the generation of texters. This how languages work we used to use * as a way to avoid getting censored it over time became a way to curse or give emphasis.
xbmcuser··on Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust
* is used to give emphasis and show that they are using the word as curse word rather just calling it bad
xbmcuser··on No Atlantic hurricanes by Sept. 12 breaks a 60-year record
If 4-5 degree temperature jump comes true it will be an extinction for many species in tropical and sub tropical areas and millions of people will die as those will hit wet bulb temperature ie it will be to hot and humid for mammals
xbmcuser··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Cars are one of the most wasted expense all over the world. People buy cars suited for what they want 1% of the time. With electric mobility options available today I think public transport makes more and more sense. Asia and Europe with the dense cities should start optimising their roads for 1 passenger electric transport.
xbmcuser··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
No you have a few years before we go back to the feudal era where almost everything is owned by a few and the rest are serfs. We are fast moving towards that world and this security bullshit is also about the same as they will use it to stop revolutions that will erupt.
xbmcuser··on Jellyfin 12.0
The default recommended folder naming settings are different for jellyfin from plex if I recall correctly. Personally I just let the arr app download metadata and let jellyfin scan local nfo files only for metadata so have not had a problem for a long time.
xbmcuser··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
I personally use an LLM mostly after I have written my posts/thoughts to fix grammar and punctuation.
xbmcuser··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
The process to make diamonds is open to anyone and has a lot of industrial uses apart from jewelry so not possible for Debeers to monopolize the market they can crash the prices but increasing prices won't be possible.
xbmcuser··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
Debeers has been trying to sell their mines for years now unsuccessfully the public might not have known but the financial people did.
xbmcuser··on True Rate of Unemployment
No then the money would go into inflating the stock market or gold etc. And won't get back into the economy.
xbmcuser··on True Rate of Unemployment
For me the true problem which most countries dont even acknowledge is low wealth and capital gains tax. Salaries are not enough because of land prices and the prices inflation it causes through out the economy. You bring down price of home land rent then price of everything else comes down. And their is a lot more economic activity as trillions of dollars are not parked in real estate for wealth generation.
xbmcuser··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I think lot of people including Ed are mixing 2 things the AI tech itself and the economic viability with the inflated values of companies building it currently. Me personally I am optimistic about the tech itself but don't see the current AI companies valuations being realistic or even the economic systems they are building around AI/LLM. As it will all be comoditised down to cost of compute + cost of electricity in the end.
xbmcuser··on A CVE Dispute
In a way I think the false promise of open source that someone else would have gone through the code is actually going to come true as LLM would have gone through the code.
xbmcuser··on Z.ai confirms Ox Alpha is a new GLM-series model and will release its weights
will we reach the singularity once the llm can be used to program the llm?
xbmcuser··on Quantum battery upends the rules of charging
That is in the US but they are becoming very common in China and now that they bringing these chargers to Europe and rest of the world I think US might be the only one left out.
xbmcuser··on Quantum battery upends the rules of charging
Now that standard LFP batteries can already charge in 5 to 10 minutes, and we will probably see 3 to 5 minutes in a few years with semi-solid and solid-state tech, anything faster feels like a marketing gimmick for most people. Sure, a battery might be able to take that much juice so quickly, but where are you actually going to get enough power to charge it that fast?
xbmcuser··on China's Oil Demand 'Likely' Peaked Last Year, Sinopec Says

xbmcuser··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Nah, what you are looking at is not values, but decades of American propaganda. Are you talking about values that allow a country to arbitrarily decide what another country's economic or political system should be, and then use military and economic force to destroy them if they don't comply? Are you talking about values that allow companies to enter poorer countries, exploit them while corrupting their elite, and then enable those same elites to bring that money back to the West? Or are you talking about values where it is okay for a country to commit genocide, as long as they are white-skinned? You are part of the same problem that Trump and his cronies are that you superior to rest of the world.
xbmcuser··on Rings forged from meteorites may have been fashionable among ancient Greek elite
In ancient times with no light pollution they could probably see and track meteorites falling. And it could have been easier to access to get those metals than mining.
