xbetaon Uber Sets Valuation Record of $17B in New Funding

Who really uses cab/taxi services? I grew up in Toronto, Canada (not a big city compare to NYC, but still pretty big) and now lives in SF Bay Area. I took public transportation (sure, they sucks sometimes) , riding bikes, and I own a very basic car (Toyota), I have never really have a need to use a taxi service in probably 17+ yrs of my life so far. I really not sure how this is improving people's life because I don't see a problem with the way I lived now.

What are some advantages that I really need a taxi service? Sorry, I don't drink, so no need to worry about drink-and-drive.

I would like to see someone here can enlightening me.

Any choices for DB? Should we continue with MySQL as we are most familiar or any other NoSQL can give us the good performance in real-time? No, not a big fan on dealing with Redis. We probably want a more reliable, fault-tolerant DB.

xbetaon Ask HN: Engineers with family, how do you manage it?

xbetaon Ask HN: Engineers with family, how do you manage it?

I think what he/she is trying to say: - if you have to choose between your kids vs your career, pick your kids - if you can have both great career + raise a great, loving family, then awesome!

I do have a dream to run my own startups, but I guess I'm "too old" for that now and I didn't see anyone in the age of 40+ founding their first startup in the valley.

I guess I'll have to give up my desire now

xbetaon High prices sending Bay Area renters and homebuyers to outlying communities

I grew up in Toronto, Canada. And when everyone is complaining about Bart or Muni or Caltrain. And complain again when Bart is on strike. I just laugh at them.

Any fellow TTC haters would agree here.

By the way, do you call Tracy as part of Bay Area?

xbetaon LinkedIn To Acquire Bright.com

Well, LinkedIn is not just targeting the techies. Recruiters use it for hunting talents in other areas too where they obviously cannot publish much on Github . And making a professional web site to market themselves is probably a little too much for their already busy life.

xbetaon S.F. programmers build alternative to HealthCare.gov [video]

As a Canadian living in the U.S. (SF bay area), I still don't understand why American make healthcare so complicated. At beginning, HMO vs PPO vs whatever makes me very confused. Why not just move to a public national health care that works for all?
