xaxaxb··on The fading American Dream: Visa uncertainty drives Indian tech workers back home
I appreciate your thoughts on green card situation. But my concern is the article. Green card issues is not once mentioned in the article, all it speaks of is H1-B. It paints the picture that people are returning to India because of H1-B problems, presenting numbers from a staffing firm and opinions from unknown experts. This is more like an opinion piece than actual research. I don't know why we are digressing to green cards.
xaxaxb··on The fading American Dream: Visa uncertainty drives Indian tech workers back home
This is a poorly researched article with no credible actual statistics. The entire article is based on a staffing company's numbers which have no citations. While what you say may be public opinion in general, sharing this on HN without checking the validity of the sources adds up to the sensationalism of this topic on the internet. This will add up to fear on the topic, not help anything, unless of course the stats are legit.

Also, any legitimate research should mention conflict of interest by the researching organization. In this case, it's a staffing company, so there's reason to believe that there might be conflicts of interest.

xaxaxb··on The fading American Dream: Visa uncertainty drives Indian tech workers back home
The article mentions the staffing firm's name incorrectly: it's not Xfino, but Xpheno. When I checked their website, the only "research" was from June 2025, with no sources cited for the numbers shown for the "research." And those jobs are limited to India. [1]

They are lying. Most of the "candidates" have Indian names, and the companies are Indian branches too. And they are getting $175K/yr there?! The hell.

At consumer-level, I believe LibreCalc should be enough. But yes, if you're in an org doing Excel-fu, you'd already get licensed access.
xaxaxb··on Microsoft in court for allegedly misleading Australians over 365 subscriptions
Use LibreOffice on Windows. Microsoft Office used to come bundled with Windows, as an office suite. Now it's a subscription product. This is a bad decision; shows how Microsoft can't keep it up together. Even if it had been one-time purchase with LTS updates and everything, just like it used to, one could possible think of buying it. But, $100/year for personal use?? What's so great about MS Office that LibreOffice can't do?? Get LibreOffice, even if you use Windows.

The thing with this administration is that they can play it very dirty behind the curtains (life-threatening dirty, to oneself, family, and friends), which is why I think the "leaders" of various orgs and countries are bending the knee.

xaxaxb··on Ask HN: Has anyone successfully pivoted from web dev to AI/ML development?
I enjoy letter-writing. So should I go on writing physical letters to everyone today? Moving with technology is essential, not just for developers, but for public as well. The trap is that we have to do it even if we don't want to. E.g: your neighbor country has nukes and you don't.
