xamolxix··on Britons: You Have 72 Hours to Stop the Snooper's Charter
> Am I now supposed to be shunned for making that argument?

The way I see it the state does not have a say in who I fall in love with. Neither do you or anyone else.

> I care more about open computer systems than making everyone middle class

The parent speaks about slave labour or something very close to it not about living in the suburbs.

> there will always be a lower class

That is your opinion and it may be true. Even so, the "lower class" could live without the worry of basic necessities. A lot of people do not currently have that luxury.

Easier than base 10?

xamolxix··on Ongoing MacKeeper fraud
I use "sudo purge" from time to time. I wonder how this app is different/better.
xamolxix··on Go home Twitter, you're drunk
> He could also alter the twitter code to display anything he wanted to twitter users.

Maybe, maybe not, depending on the web server's permissions. Also it seems to be a subdomain which may not have the main twitter code.

It's still pretty bad and embarrassing.

xamolxix··on Go home Twitter, you're drunk
He seems to be executing the "uptime" command. If that is not the only one he can (which most likely it isn't) it's bad.
xamolxix··on Show HN: DropSubs – Download subtitles for video files
SMPlayer does not have a mac os x edition anymore. It's my favorite player on other platforms though and I love the subtitles feature.
xamolxix··on Show HN: DropSubs – Download subtitles for video files
And also maybe allow for more than one language, or "Any". I have got an application error on the actual download page, so I'm not sure if that is already being offered there.
xamolxix··on What we give away when we log on to a public Wi-Fi network
WLAN only cares about SSID. This is how you get roaming mode where you move between access points without losing connectivity (most Universities, company campuses, etc will have this setup)
xamolxix··on What we give away when we log on to a public Wi-Fi network
Private internet access (dot com) provide a point and click interface for windows and mac os x. On linux one has to manually config but it's not that hard. I have had non-technical people use it with no issues. I am sure there are others out there.

I am not associated with them in any way.

xamolxix··on What we give away when we log on to a public Wi-Fi network
I suspect it's not plain old sniffing. He might give fake DNS records to point to his own phishing site (facebook clone). It's trivial to re-post the credentials to the real facebook check the password and then actually log them in. curl can be used to do this, as I am sure many others.

Edit: SSL does not have to be used on the clone. Most people will not notice/care.

xamolxix··on What we give away when we log on to a public Wi-Fi network
Considering how ridiculously cheap an anonymous VPN service is these days I am surprised how many people do not use them.
xamolxix··on Bilingual brains: Variety makes you mentally fit
> Include phonetic training. Make the user distinguish between each minimal pair in the language, possibly even every single syllable in the language. This is simple, but rarely done.

I believe that this is very good advice.

The realization there are actually different sounds in different languages has came as surprise to me. I always naively assumed that the same sounds where just combined differently. Obviously this has had a negative impact in my learning.

xamolxix··on Tor Browser 4.0 is released
> Yes, and the value of out minus in correlating with the complainant's bandwidth experience.

That would be true if only if that's the only extra thing you would be doing on the node though. Even then seems like pretty thin evidence.

xamolxix··on How Unreliable is UDP?
> • try alongside other traffic on the endpoints, and note that TCP streams can't find their achievable rates (or split the available bandwidth amongst themselves) without hitting the packet-dropping pressure that also affects UDP. So perhaps try with 1, 2, or more TCP streams doing a max-speed copy at the same time.

I agree. Having (or not) other traffic on the network will impact UDP throughput dramatically. As one who does VoIP QoS will soon find out.

Thank you. It looks like a well documented article. Makes me sad to find this out.
xamolxix··on How Wolves Change Rivers [video]
Reminds me about this TED talk http://youtu.be/vpTHi7O66pI where Allan Savory speaks about the behavior of herbivores with/without predators and the impact on flora.

Fascinating, really.

I hope the day will come when we understand the biosphere of this wonderful planet we live on.

No that's clear enough. I must have missed it. sorry.
xamolxix··on Your friends are lying to you. For $10, I wont.
Nice idea!

Some (all?) sample questions can be answered with yes or no. I know that you mention a conversation at the top but you might want to make it a bit more clear that your feedback will be more than yes or no.

xamolxix··on Reddit CEO Calls Out Former Reddit Employee on Reddit
I think you are referring to philosophical theories. In science a theory can be a "fact". Ex: Theory of general and theory of special relativity, Theory of evolution by natural selection, Quantum theory, etc.

Theoretically (excuse the pun) they could all be disproved some day but most people know they will not be.

To cite wikipedia for lack of a better source:

"Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge, in contrast to more common uses of the word "theory" that imply that something is unproven or speculative (which is better characterized by the word 'hypothesis'"

> My guess: taxi license/medallions are a relic that is bound to disappear pretty quickly. Since in some places people have to BUY these things, it's obviously not going to be done overnight.

I agree, however until they lawfully become a thing of the past is not fair to people who have bought them (or followed the possibly lengthy procedure of getting licensed)

xamolxix··on Reading the Silk Road configuration
> The onion server should not be able to access the internet directly and should never know it's own IP-address.

I may be overly pedantic here but it should be "public IP address" as there is no TCP/IP without an IP address. The address may be in the private ranges, though.

xamolxix··on Trends in the Silk Road 2.0
> With hundreds of reviews I'd hope a few people were smart enough to sacrifice some of their MDMA to test it.

I guess that it depends on how easy it is to test it. If it requires a chemistry degree and a lab I am guessing they won't test even if they are otherwise smart.

xamolxix··on What's up with the number 163?
Since numbers are infinite and the ways we can manipulate them are infinite (or at least large) doesn't it mean that unlikely or strange things happen all the time?

I would be more surprised if they wouldn't happen.

xamolxix··on Apple’s “warrant canary” disappears
You are right on both points. They do say that (I see now that my laptop says "designed by Apple in California") and yes, I did not imagine that all of their engineers are in the US.

I would still guess that they would try to move to another country rather than shutting down. I admit that it would be hard if not impossible.

It might be me as I am not a native English speaker but I think "non-commercial" is more accurate than "non-professional" as people can write free software rather professionally and they often do.

xamolxix··on Italy: High Court shoots down Windows tax
Considering that in the EU Microsoft has to provide a choice of alternative browsers (the N edition of windows) I see this as more sane option that addresses the problem closer to the core and I hope that it will be required practice in the whole EU.

After all, a vendor who is confident in the value of their product has nothing to fear in the face of fair competition.
