xalava··on The Life Cycle of Money
If it looks correct, it must be then.

More seriously, if you want to learn money and its infrastructure, I recommend Banque de France's book on the matter "Payments and market infrastructures in the digital era" https://www.banque-france.fr/system/files/2023-04/payments_m...

xalava··on The EU Just Killed ARR
The article mixes two months notice cancellation, non-recurring contracts, and business predictions. It is AI generated randomness for marketing.
xalava··on Murex – An intuitive and content aware shell for a modern command line
Thanks for pointing it out. I've tried both as interactive shells for a few minutes. Murex seems to have a more minimalist approach that works well as a drop-in replacement.

However, I have trouble understanding some design decision, such as inventing redundant keywords. And I've spotted bugs in boths (e.g. ls --literal fails in nu, and the completion proposes it twice in Murex).

xalava··on Weaponizing Ads: How Google and Facebook Ads Are Used to Wage Propaganda Wars
Your idea is that the U.S. government lawfully prosecutes foreign governments, including hostile ones?
xalava··on Weaponizing Ads: How Google and Facebook Ads Are Used to Wage Propaganda Wars
That is not how AML-CFT work. Banks calculate your level of risk. When in doubt, they will cut you off or block individual transactions, unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
xalava··on Teslas monitor everything – including you [video] from WIRED
Bikes have already taken market shares from cars in large European cities such as Amsterdam [0] or Paris [1]. They may be a superior technology for most urban commutes: faster, requiring less space on roads and for parking, and more enjoyable [2].

Buses are subsidized. In cities with subways, they are used primarily to accommodate people with limited mobility or to cover rare routes. Between cities, they remain the cheapest option. Therefore, I'm not sure that cost is an important factor.

xalava··on Show HN: LookAway – a native macOS app for building healthy screen habits
For Linux users, I particularly recommend SafeEyes https://slgobinath.github.io/SafeEyes/

While it doesn't detect video calls automatically, you can receive notifications and choose to skip breaks when needed.

More importantly, while it sometimes interrupts my flow, that also helps me reassess my current focus.

xalava··on I'm Done with Ubuntu
I have found a method that I use at each new install. It is mostly a configuration file that prioritizes Mozilla's PPA over snap:

xalava··on IMF Paper on Programmability in Payment and Settlement
Author here. This paper presents concepts well-known to the HN community to policymakers. I'm curious about your opinions!
xalava··on EU Council to Vote on Chat Scanning Proposal on Thursday
Dear HNautes,

Politicians in Europe generally do not appreciate mass, repetitive emailing. It might even have an adversarial effect.

If you want to be helpful, please consider more strategic alternatives such raising awareness among the general public, writing thoughtful arguments, or joining specialized non-profits or political parties.

xalava··on Show HN: Markdown HN profiles at {user}.at.hn
Fun idea!

- The first bullet point does not seem to be recognised (on your profile and mine). - webp images do not work?

xalava··on Omakub – Opinionated Ubuntu Setup
There is a question of priorities here.

Ubuntu is the distro that most likely works out of the box and is the most compatible with any software. The rest are just preferences.

Maybe this project can help people explore new configurations. However, I've found that each tweak costs time with each installation, needs regular updates, and some elements are not compatible. It is possible to enjoy the flexibility of Linux without trying to be a Picasso of the desktop experience.

Also, I tried it in a box, it crashed.

Same experience, with also a strange non-standard folder for binaries in the user's home.
xalava··on SEC charges Kraken for operating as an unregistered securities exchange
The SEC has been consistently saying that most crytoassets were securities. The only acknowledged exception, for which it had contradictory statements, is if a protocol is "sufficiently decentralized" such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.[1]

On the IPO, the registration is independant from such pursuits as the SEC raised during their approval. [2]

That said, there would have been better course of action to protect consumers, such as establishing an appropriate regulatory framework, but I may be too European.

xalava··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
Agreed. I use - A feed reader with multiple sources - On X, I started by muting words and accounts. I now only watch one highly curated list - Here - podcasts - Engaging with relevant people directly

I'm sometimes a bit late on new trends, but I spend more time on long forms and reinforce a meaningful network in the process.

xalava··on Google to invest up to $2B in Anthropic
You may achieve this by only visiting websites or pages with tailored feeds.

The problem is that it requires a bit of self discipline. Google and Meta are probably safe then...

xalava··on Benchmarks of JavaScript Package Managers
This is nice, and congrats to the team. However, I've tested extensively npm, pnpm, yarn and even bun for projects that involved building new images regularly. They all worked faster than npm, but I found minor quirks on specific libraries or due to the constrained environment that didn't make the switch worth it.

I wish the open source management/governance/incentives could allow for either better standardization or more upstream contributions. Meanwhile, I continue to recommend to my students to go with the most standard tool.

xalava··on Makefiles for web work
I realize that I have been using shell scripts for this. I just copy-paste commands and add a selector. It has the benefit that I didn't need to learn a new syntax.
xalava··on Function keys productivity trick
Gnome assigns SUPER+NUM to the applications in the sidebar by default. You can change the applications or their order visually and the keyboard shortcut is highly accessible.

It's one of the well thought features that makes me stick with it.

xalava··on The dictatorship of the articulate
This article is an interesting example of the cognitive difficulty of apprehending a complex society.

The bridges perfectly illustrate it. It is not uncommon that renovating a bridge costs more than the initial construction. However, it seems surprising, as the engineering challenges are more difficult to understand, and little additional value is created.

Urban planning complexity increases with a city's maturity. Imagine Paris or Rome. Every building is historical, owned by a combination of individuals and corporations, with water, gas, electricity, wastewater systems span centuries, and an underground with cavities for the subway, ancient mines, and WWII bunkers.

Sure, an app to hail taxis is a nice idea. As the article says, it's not running water, but it is nice. And sure, if committees had discussed it, it would probably never have existed. But a monopoly that takes a 20% cut on precarious workers is not a desirable outcome. So the articulate have stepped in.

Most citizens don't know how to spell CPU. They still have the right to choose their future.

xalava··on CNIL makes Google Analytics almost illegal in France
European laws have a different approach regarding most individual rights. They are socially defined and distinguished from ownership.

Your body for instance is probably better protected in terms of chemical additives, healthcare and now pregnancy choices, but you can't easily sell body parts or be a surrogate.

xalava··on LibreWolf: A privacy-focused Firefox fork
As you show, there is value in a Firefox configured out of the box. The only question is wether they can keep up with updates.
xalava··on Show HN: Browser extension that spoofs your location data to match your VPN
I wonder how that compares with Google Chrome relationship with Google...
xalava··on I love the Linux desktop, but that doesn't mean I don't see its problems
As a desktop, Linux is now fully functional for most users. I know administrations running on Linux, law firms, and even my dad. Beginner users don't care about choices, they get Linux Mint or similar with LibreOffice and Firefox and they are good to go for most of their tasks. For advanced users, the abundance is a key benefit of this ecosystem.

No company is fully focused on the desktop OS, and I don't see why they should. This article is contradictory saying "desktop operating system will lie in the hands of Apple with macOS and us with Linux". It is not because Microsoft prioritize cloud services that it abandons desktops, it is not a priority for many Linux developers and sponsors as stated above in the article, and it doesn't seem a high priority for Apple either.

xalava··on Why All Cryptocurrency Should Die in a Fire
The importance of privacy is not theoretical.

First, the data is accessible by credit card provider, but also by several financial and technical intermediaries. Second, there is no way for any of those companies to guarantee that the data will never be leaked.

Then, in terms of consequences, it includes reputional risks, security risks people know your behavior patterns, and to be arrested for being at the wrong place and wrong time. Then is all the track record of governmental overreach that used this type of data, from arresting environmental activists to killings based on sexuality (for example). It happened in everywhere, and it still happens today.
