xalava··on Central Bank Digital Currencies are coming
The technology side is secondary. However, if it wasn't for cryptocurrencies, we wouldn't be discussing this topic today. Bitcoin has proven that it was possible to build an open financial infrastructure, and has inspired many similar projects.

The hybrid fiscal/monetary policy is an interesting perspective, especially in those times. My understanding of ongoing debates is that there is no clear strategy yet.

xalava··on Central Bank Digital Currencies are coming
There is a key difference in nature, with some practical consequences.

You don't have money in your bank account, the bank has a debt toward you. When you wire money or pay with a credit card, it triggers a chain of intermediaries to move that debt. It is costly in part because of the counterparty risks. In most countries, an individual however is protected from a bank default up to a certain amount.

Cash is directly minted by the central bank. In a trustless manner, if you exchange goods and services for cash, the settlement is instantaneous. Legally, this cash can be used anywhere in your country.

For everyday use, it might not change habits overnight, but it will have a long term impact on the financial infrastructure.

xalava··on France, UE, Covid, democracry and the research of complete stupidity
Rants might be an interesting art form, but are not information. On topics I know:

- People get fired every day in France. The set of valid justifications and processes are explicit.

- EU legal harmonization is a work in progress that respect sovereignty.

The last part probably deserves medical attention :

- vote / don't vote

- Educate / don't listen

- Climate change will kill / Live a pleasant life

xalava··on Linux Sucks 2020 [video]
I've run into the problem a few times, trying to run an old version of a software for research purposes. But for daily usage, this misses the concept of open source.

Most decades old software is still maintained, rebuild and packaged by every distribution. You can't easily run a 30 years old program, but you can run its latest version, for free.

Funny you should say that, this kind of shallow formal rules are typically what a government would propose...
xalava··on Sort of handy
While this is interesting, it illustrates the time and tinkering necessary to combine different tools and documentations to achieve something simple. Another similar example that I use regularly on constrained machines to list installed packages :

   dpkg-query -W --showformat='${Installed-Size} ${Package} ${Status}\n' | grep -v deinstall | sort -n | awk '{print $1" "$2}'
I wish there were a shell with visual help to build such commands. Meanwhile I slowly add useful combinations as aliases in .*rc And probably use "Disk Usage Analyser" (baobab) for this.
xalava··on The iPad Awkwardly Turns 10
I wonder how much those problems are related to the design of the OS or to commercial strategies.

I am under the impression to have a well designed base layer and apps. Then if I want anything more or different, I can use other apps that are secondary citizens with each their own isolated subscription/cloud/format strategy.

The ecosystem of free apps that you can find on desktops (mac, windows, linux) of reliable text editors, command line tools, syncing software ... seems to be missing.

xalava··on Ask HN: What's your cross-platform PDF / ePub reading workflow?
Interesting solution, thanks ! However, upload seem to only be available from the desktop and annotations are quite primitive (especially on phone/ipad). So it works perfectly for books, not so much for storing and annotating all documents

xalava··on Should Rivers Have Rights? A Growing Movement Says It’s Time
I beg to differ. Exactly as shown your video, environmental protection is currently mainly led as an element of public policy. Hence, when it conflicts with economic and individuals' interests there is not much weight to preserve regulations and budgets.

The approach taken in recent years consist in creating or empowering an entity to represent of those interests. The more legitimate and the more economically robust is this entity, the more difficult it will be to act against its interests.

It is imperfect, but I think that this approach should be explored when existing regulations consistently fail

xalava··on Should Rivers Have Rights? A Growing Movement Says It’s Time
We worked on a concept based on this idea a couple of years ago, at the highest of DAOs and Smart Contracts hype.

There is already the possibility to create environmental protection non-profits for a specific area. In France, and other countries, it gives you the right to participate in lawsuit and even collect reparation for ecological prejudice (https://www.euractiv.com/section/climate-environment/news/er.... You can't however sue on behalf of the river's endangered interests. Giving legal personnality doesn't necessarily change the law as the article implies but change the way the law works.

Our concept was to add 'economic personnality'. Natural resources such as a river would have a cryptoasset account collectively managed by donors. "Gardeners" are local people hired by this collective to execute maintenance tasks, or lawsuits, while this board of donors oversee the management of the founds. Compared to a local non-profit, you gain easy internationalisation of donors and more transparency on funds allocation, potentially avoiding corruption.

The key is in the governance rules. As pointed in the article, it is extremely difficult to represent fairly and combine populations' interests and environment protection at the local, national and worldwide levels.

xalava··on US Congress recommends to policy makers to get acquainted with blockchains [pdf]
After a comprehensive analysis of the current state of regulations, the ecosystem, and potentials, Joint Economic Committee Report recommands: - Policymakers and the public should become more familiar with digital currencies and other uses of blockchain technologies, which have a wide range of future application. - Regulators should continue to coordinating with each other to guarantee coherent policy frameworks, definitions, and jurisdictions. - Policymakers, regulators, and entrepreneurs should work together to ensure developers can quickly deploy blockchain technology to protect Americans from fraud, theft, and abuse, while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. - Government agencies at all levels should consider and examine new uses for blockchain technology to help make the government function more efficiently.
