wyck··on Why I have zero faith in crypto venture capitalists
This opinion is really common, I used to have it but what changed my mind was realizing there are not really any "real world" use cases. I look at crypto as actual money, with the same definition: "money is a verifiable record that is generally accepted". Money in of itself does not have any "real world" use cases, money is money. Money facilitates economic velocity and growth in the same way crypto does, except crypto has the potential to be more efficient and secure. One of the key reasons money exists is "currency velocity", crypto improves upon this a lot. Banks make money with money, they don't make money with real use cases. Good crypto projects act like decentralized banks, nothing more.

In other words ignore all the bullshit projects and look at the ones who are structured like banks, financial instruments, or risk management. Then the use cases of cypto become very clear.

wyck··on Luca App: CCC calls for a moratorium
There is so much incompetency in governmental IT/software decisions and software it's actually sad.

Is it a product of smart people simply not working in this sector or corruption?. It seems from the outside to be filled with imbeciles masquerading as administrators.

We need to somehow make the government way more accountable, if only there was an organization that could do that, we could call it the media.

wyck··on Cool data embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain
Blockchain pollution.
wyck··on $7.5B In Stolen Bitcoin from 2016 Bitfinex Hack has just been moved
Its pretty easy to from a tech perspective to tumble and swap coins or use a combination of both. Not only that but you can swap into different blockchains which have fully anonymous layers. So tracing a path is completely impossible. But there is one significant problem, tumbling and swapping 7.5 Billion is hard to do without creating huge market waves and that will be noticed. So you would spread it over 3-4 years and use a variety of swap/tumblers and it can be done. Eventually you have to cash it out and some off ramps might raise some flags.
wyck··on $7.5B In Stolen Bitcoin from 2016 Bitfinex Hack has just been moved
I think whole bunch of them do, Eric Swalwell accepts like 6 of them.
wyck··on A woman who took on Google and won
You're still accountable to the subcontractors you hire.
wyck··on Show HN: PDFs from HTML
I'm aware of the history, in the same context of why it not a good idea to use a steam engine in a train anymore
wyck··on Show HN: PDFs from HTML
Rigid formats sound great but that's unfortunately it's not 1985. Almost every document across most major industries is in .pdf and benefits from mutli size output(print, desktop, mobile). Adobe would not have spend millions in their assinine AI if this wasn't a problem. No one in the "insert any industry sector here" is using secure html document's to sends files, or any other format.
wyck··on Show HN: PDFs from HTML
The Achilles heel pf PDF's are they don't have responsive layouts. It's so bad the Adobe team created an AI to resize layouts, yes an AI in the cloud, available only on the Adobe app. How insanely bad is your file format that you need an AI to resize layouts in 2021? If anyone has had to handle layouts programmatically I'd think they would agree that PDF's are the most outdated ass backwards file format in existence.
wyck··on Tesla cars can be bought in Bitcoin
Like all things bitcoin it's easy. It's a lot easier to press a button on your phone and transfer 100k then it is to go through the pains of a bank transfer or any other payment method. I know hacker news is American centric but not all counties have the same cap gains taxes, plus you have to actually have a gain to pay taxes and these are all sorts of ways to mitigate this.
wyck··on Launch HN: Pry (YC W21) – Finance for Founders
Looks cool , some points

1. Lot very early stage start-ups will simply use excel instead of 50$/month. You should have an easier price point to onboard just the planning features. As they grow they upgrade.

2. The docs leave a lot to be desired, not going to go through all work of sign-up without better docs.

3. Security is no where to be found, double authentication, policies, something..

wyck··on Germany pauses AstraZeneca vaccinations as a 'precaution'
Most likely liability. Since all the AZ vaccines were rushed to market they did not go through the regular channels of approval, in some countries legislation had to be changed in order to limit the liability of doctors/technicians and the companies themselves.

I've personally seen the waiver forms send to doctors, and none of the usual testing was done, including the effect on youngsters, pregnant women, etc.

There is a very good reason we had these regulations in place to begin with.

tl'dr: Governments have let AZ off the hook legally if side-effects or worse occur.

wyck··on Launch HN: Webiny (YC W21) – Open-source serverless framework with a drop-in CMS
The toolset looks like you made it for your own workflow and not actual users, meaning it's very rigid and tied to specifics instead of allowing for flexibility, I have a hard time actually understanding what this is for. The main feature of it being serverless isn't a selling point for me. I don't use Graphql/DynamoDB or any of the tools you describe outside Lambda. It would be simply too much work to start with all your tooling, that would be considerable technical debt especially compared to the ocean of options available with headless CMS's.
wyck··on Citus 10 brings columnar compression to Postgres
Amazon really missed the boat on Citus, a few more great acquisitions like this and Azure is going to look great (yes I know it can be still self installed on AWS).
wyck··on Launch HN: SST (YC W21) – A live development environment for AWS Lambda
Debugging Lambda is a pain, your site is amazing, so clear and easy to follow.
wyck··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
I literally just started a new sass on AWS and only have spend about 80$, today I got a call from a rep from their primary headquarters (unlike Google) , and he applied a 300$ initial credit and I can email him for a questions/support. No pressure just all around nice.

I've had similar calls from google in the past that were disasters, just someone hammering the up sales button, I actually had to block a google rep on my phone.

wyck··on What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Dashboards? (2018)
I find it hard to actually understand what the point of understanding what we talk about when understanding.
wyck··on Show HN: Check if my startup ideas have legs
You want people to put money towards a vague idea, just to see if it's a good idea? If you don't have a good idea and skin in the game, what on earth makes you think you'll be able to create something? I don't get it.
wyck··on Interview Frustrations
They just have a organizing issues, its normal to give a presentation for a high level competitive job, but they should have gone through with it regardless if they found a better candidate. They don't know how to make a situation a win/win.

At the end of the day you never know what you're getting from an interview, some great candidates turn into duds and vice versa. It's amazing how many people in hiring positions are just really shit at judging character, instead they rely on some bullshit metrics and process to fill in their lack of intuition.

wyck··on Libyan Desert Glass: New field and Fourier transform infrared data (2013)
My takeaway was this was an impact from a meteorite but I'm not 100% sure. Is there an "explain this like we are having a real life conversion" version?
wyck··on Meshtastic: Open-source, off-grid, hiking, climbing, GPS mesh communicator
That's similar to what I had, you also need a gps receiver, so your investing close to 650$, not great for when your dog smacks it on a rock or tree. The problem is in a mountainous area you need line of sight, so it became practically useless, I would constantly loose the signal. Combined with the battery life in cold weather... The only solution was a satellite connection or creating some sort of mesh coverage like the OP link suggests.

ps. Most dog trackers also do not work outside usa.

wyck··on A Framework for Writing Better Documentation
Thanks for this, can anyone recommend what actual tool they prefer to write, publish, and manage documentation with? I'm aware of Sphinx, etc but I'm considering just using one of the many markdown related static generators, is something with a back-end(cms) better?
wyck··on Meshtastic: Open-source, off-grid, hiking, climbing, GPS mesh communicator
I would love this for my dog, she runs in the woods and I like to know where she is. I've tried a Lidar collar but the range is too low. The only other option is a cell phone in a case (which is used by search and rescue) but it's to expensive since you need a cell phone plan, and it's and too bulky to attach to a moving animal.

There is a market for this, I'll help prototype it , someone start a company to track dogs and children (out playing, biking, skiing) :)

wyck··on Habitat 67, Montreal's 'failed dream'
I'm not the one who went on the front page of la presse and in the national news, nor was I part of any of the drama that followed. It was a cool spot and then I moved on to other places, my friend also moved out of habitat so I had no place to park my car lol.
wyck··on Habitat 67, Montreal's 'failed dream'
He probably means Big Joe and Pyramid, not many surfers go there it's really dangerous and a .5km paddle just to get to.

I was one of the OG habitat kakayers, there was no surfers back then, none. I saw maybe 1-2 kayakers a month, usually the guys from the old riot factory, no one knew about it. I found it only because my friend happened to live at habitat.

To be honest once people found out about it and the surf school started it was ruined, I never go anymore, Big Joe is still empty though most of the time, you have to be nuts to bring a suft board way out there, I think in 5 years I saw maybe 3 surfers out there and 2 arrived by jet ski.

wyck··on Discover the best developer blogs on any tech stack
Anything that takes traffic away from Google is a good thing.

Bring back the old school internet, forums, curated lists, niche communities, irc !

wyck··on Launch HN: Aviron (YC W21) – High-Intensity Peloton for Rowing
I wish someone who figure out how to make a paddling machine, it much better for your core, back and overall everything than a rowing machine.
wyck··on Launch HN: Seed (YC W21) – A Fully-Managed CI/CD Pipeline for Serverless
Yes that does sound good.

I'm working with Lambda with some great devs but we are all spending way to much time figuring our how AWS is structured and managed instead of actually writing code.

wyck··on The Unauthorized Story of Andreessen Horowitz
No, a blockchain is an immutable ledger, you can't equate a blockchain to an API. That would be like comparing an apple to a car.

Lots of blockchain tech (defi) use various API's in their own ecosystems, some private, and some public like Chainlink's oracle system.
