What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Dashboards? (2018)

Interesting, I'll have to investigate the paper in more detail. I enjoyed the podcast where the authors discussed their paper and dashboards in general: https://datastori.es/135-the-dashboard-conspiracy-with-lyn-b...

I’m working on a dashboard side project that I’m very excited about, so I’m always glad to see these kinds of articles.

Please share!

anyone has a good replacement for microsoft access and vba? I used to love how easy it was for me to create a dashboard with buttons

Most companies I've seen use Tableau: https://www.tableau.com/products/desktop

Microsoft is pushing Power BI as a general replacement for all of its old access, VB, etc. dashboard related tools: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/

For an open source solution the Jupyter ecosystem has some promising tools for turning analytical notebooks into interactive dashboards: https://blog.jupyter.org/dashboarding-with-jupyterlab-3-789f...

Smilling people dragging rectangles on the screen! PowerBI on the web turns corporate Angular mess into an Angular disaster with iframes and loading spinners.

Yeah I don't disagree--I have yet to see a Power BI dashboard that isn't a slow, horrible mess.

Tried Dash lately and was pleasantly surprised. We didn't leave much time at all for the dashboard section, but we were able to pick it up and hack something together in the little bit of time we had left.

I came here to write this too. I've had success building proof of concept apps and deploying as a Dash/Plotly app. Bokeh is also worth a look for a solution supported by the open source ecosystem [0].

A particularly useful example of Bokeh is the dashboard which gives visibility into how Dask is running your distributed compute job [1].

Just be warned, if you are used to vba you might feel constrained in the various dashboard tools we have today (Tableau, PowerBI, etc.). I am convinced we need more than that, we need tools to build web apps that allow data entry.

Their talk recording is good. They talked about how dashboard should help the users to increase literacy, awareness and help them in decision making.

I find it hard to actually understand what the point of understanding what we talk about when understanding.
