wuming2··on Lidl's Cloud Gambit: Europe's Shift to Sovereign Computing
In a finite resources world, with unsustainable levels of pollution and soon of climate change, I don’t understand why much more of EU regulation and enforcement resources are not spent towards mandatory hardware re-use. All computer vendors know 90% of IT users never even scratch the surface of computational power and functionalities.

As for Gaia-X itself, governments are always on the hunt for programs to justify their spending of tax and debt money. Favorable outcome is the spending itself as a mean to subsidize this and that group.

wuming2··on I'm tired of fixing customers' AI generated code
Time to expertise is down to zero in “Fake until you make it” circles. 260 week-long iterations later, having survived the “hype curve” and the “Valley of Death”, they declare themselves “battle-proven”. A.k.a. experts.
wuming2··on So Much Produce Comes in Plastic. Is There a Better Way?
My wife received a new phone case today. Hard to brake by design and function it was already encased in it’s retail box. And wrapped in a bubble bag. And in a plastic bag. And in another plastic bag.
wuming2··on Google has sent internet into 'spiral of decline', claims DeepMind co-founder
I never understood people writing as there were, or are, no alternatives. For ad professionals perhaps or for content providers. Of any quality. But as a consumer all I needed to leave Goog was to try a few other search engines and settle on the one returning results closest to what I wanted. Then tapped Settings > Safari > Search Engine and made my choice. Years ago now.
wuming2··on Can plastic recycling ever work?
Would be the next logical step. But without strong incentives, either intentional rationing of row materials or the equivalent sharp increase of their cost, I don’t see any indication producers and retailers would adopt it.
wuming2··on Can plastic recycling ever work?
Would it help to increase thickness? More weight and material, increased cost, to factor in the reduced trail of pollution every piece of single use plastic has?
wuming2··on Why I’m betting on Nostr
USENET with fancy interface?
wuming2··on Docker Is Four Things
Most commonly used languages are available on all platforms. Together with the vast cornucopia of their libraries. So if I want to develop on a Mac or Windows, as is common, native versions are available for either of them.

For who target Linux as deployment platform, as is common, Docker instead forces to run the Linux version of interpreters and libraries on a Mac or Windows. On top of a Linux mini VM. Could not be otherwise?

wuming2··on Genome of the Tyrolean Iceman reveals unusually high Anatolian farmer ancestry
Surprised they were able to extract reliable information. I remember reading after it was finally returned to Italy body has been badly damaged and polymerized (“plastified”) by a careless attempt at preservation in Austria.
wuming2··on Career Advice Nobody Gave Me: Never Ignore a Recruiter (2022)
Reasons because you are appealing to potential employers or not. I witnessed terrible candidates being successfully pitched to large corporations. Because candidates knew how to game the story telling and recruiters wanted the commission worth one month of a high salary. Conversely weaker candidates, for whatever reason, are simply idled without any feedback. If this is the case you are much better off contacting potential employers directly to find out why. Ground truth.
wuming2··on Career Advice Nobody Gave Me: Never Ignore a Recruiter (2022)
Recruiters are a barrier between you and ground truth. If your resume is in demand and expected salary is high enough they can keep the pipeline full. If it is not and most likely you are reaching out to them, instead of the opposite, then you are simply running from the truth.
wuming2··on Old software keeping space missions alive
It may be true with embedded applications or with Windows. Not on a Mac.
wuming2··on Veilid is an open-source, P2P, mobile-first, networked application framework
No expert but I do wonder how a cheap client can be more secure than a professionally managed server.
wuming2··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
For a small personal website I suggest to look at alwaysdata.com. In France so ipv6 support is a given.
wuming2··on Taming the Flame of Aging: Key Pathway for Chronic Inflammation Revealed
Perhaps the first generated the next one and so on. Let’s wait for hallucinations now.
wuming2··on Death of the physical library
Still have to find a monitor large, affordable and with enough resolution to replicate two books from an encyclopedia open and ready on a desk.

Also the internet can not replicate the social possibilities enabled by physical proximity.

wuming2··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
But we are not reusing them.
wuming2··on ASML EUV lithography machine could keep Moore’s Law on track
Peak applications require the latest and most powerful tech. With it’s colossal trail of pollution from manufacturing.

For the rest I often wonder if would not be better for the environment to re-purpose older, already made tech.

Plenty of embedded systems grinding on for a long time.

And user facing applications lack one thing: public stats of peak system usage. When confronted with a new purchase we should be handed over a sheet of our own and peers statistics. Producers and service providers have them anyway.

wuming2··on How much better was DEC Alpha than contemporaneous x86? (2020)
At my university one assistant professor bought an Alpha powered PC. Don’t remember the brand but it was COTS as much as possible other students murmured. An attempt to find the economies of scale.

Unfortunately the video card had no driver ready. So it sat under a desk unused for years. Being an embarrassing mistake at first, then forgotten and eventually obsolete.

wuming2··on MacOS in QEMU – ARM edition [pdf]
So what is for rent on AWS or MacStadium are not VMs on genuine Mac hardware?
wuming2··on The hidden cost of air quality monitoring
2015 seems to mark the beginning and mostly the end of the project. Another EU taxpayers money throwaway subsidy I believe.
wuming2··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
Could someone explain why a new web interface, albeit arguably better for mobile and actually enjoyable on desktop if the following can be forgotten, is so damn slow? When loading it appears to emerge from unknown depths and open up with a heavy sigh. Personification of a tool but this the impression it gives me every time. I thought 2020s were years when multi cores and gigabytes of memory would render everything snappy.
wuming2··on A Swedish startup’s bid to build a green rival to AWS
Plenty of reasons for infrastructure/platform/software independence. But if Munich and Bavaria, one of the richest regions in all of Europe, could not escape the shackles of Microsoft I think there’s not enough free will to scale a Swedish startup to continental scale.
wuming2··on A Swedish startup’s bid to build a green rival to AWS
Didn’t know them. Anything comparable for other languages?
wuming2··on George Hotz of Tinygrad fame: AMD rant, giving up on AMD
literally, anything, except, like, holy, shit, top, entire

Keywords were enough to kill my interest within seconds.

Maybe is how americans talk on a day to day basis. Not being with them I wouldn’t know. But I regret wasting few seconds of my time on this “shit” already.

wuming2··on Envisioning a Simplified Intel Architecture
Legacy code has still important real-life functions to drive. That is clear.

That Intel has to thread carefully to dump in-hardware 16 bit compatibility mode in 2023 is just sad.

I can also see why who does not have to deal with so much baggage on their shoulders is capable of being much more nimble and drive innovation.

Finally I can now better understand why Apple dumps an ISA every decade or so.

wuming2··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
I do wonder sometimes if scraping the million plus of components, produced and assembled with great care into a ICE car and still relatively new, makes any sense. Re-powering seems no brainer to keep millions of new cars out of the scrapyard. And avoid the environmentally unsustainable production of slightly newer cars. Reusing them whole, engine included, is ideal. If battery re-powering, synthetic gasoline and hydrogen re-powering are not viable for multiple reasons I wonder what the best pool of options is.
wuming2··on Germany to switch off last remaining nuclear power plants
https://eu.boell.org/en/2021/04/26/nuclear-power-european-un...

The number of nuclear reactors in operation in the EU peaked in 1989. More than thirty years of decline demonstrate low political, taxpayers and eventually industrial support. There are only so many years you can invest at training and financing without returns.

Only nations with a nuclear deterrent still moderately invest in nuclear power. Industry and society in general moved on.

wuming2··on Apple will use 100 percent recycled cobalt in batteries by 2025
With 70% of revenues from hundred million battery powered devices a year is a big deal.
wuming2··on Rust, RR, Neovim: A perfect debug combination
Isn’t Apple known for integrating DTrace in Leopard back in 2007?
