wubbert··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident
Israel.
wubbert··on Google has added ads on both its search page and Chrome://newtab
>the NBER defines a recession as "a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales".

Which we have right now. But don't trust objective observations of reality. Just Trust the Experts™ and call anyone who disagrees a conspiracy theorist.

wubbert··on Hertz is still having rental car customers wrongfully arrested, lawsuit claims
>Lawyers for the customers say that the criminal theft reports are a way to recover lost inventory

If the "inventory" (the car) is "lost," then wouldn't that imply that the renter has a car that they shouldn't have? I.E. stolen it? Or at the very least not returned it when they should have?

wubbert··on IMDB deleted all negative user reviews for The Rings of Power
IMDb deleted their message boards several years ago because "trolls" were giving movies bad reviews.[1]

wubbert··on Wikipedia tests a new UI design
You've been able to enable this in your account preferences for a while now, and it's also been the default on non-English versions of Wikipedia for a while as well.
wubbert··on Police Can Trace Cameras Thanks to Sensor Imperfection ‘Fingerprints’
About 15 years when I got my first digital camera, I noticed that there were always a few dots in the same spots that were bright white/red/green/blue no matter what the settings on the camera were or what the picture was of. I found out these were "hot pixels" and were caused by defects in the sensor. I'd always wondered if someone could create an algorithm to match photos to a specific camera based on hot pixels. It seems like this is exactly that.
wubbert··on The Lumpy Pearls That Enchanted the Medicis (2019)
I've always read that the word "baroque" came from a word that meant "misshapen pearl", but I've never actually seen these pearls before. These are very neat.
wubbert··on Dropbox deletes Rick and Morty creators account for secret TOS violation
I use Syncthing, which is similar to ResilioSync. Syncthing doesn't have as many features as ResilioSync, but its completely free and open source.
wubbert··on Bugs are evolving to eat plastic, study finds
They're phrasing it that way for sensationalism.
wubbert··on This Image Does Not Exist
I got 5/7 before I stopped. I feel like this would be even easier if the images were higher resolution.
wubbert··on This Image Does Not Exist
>It can't even do text.

An unpaid intern adding text to AI generated images would be trivial.

wubbert··on Show HN: Create powerful coming soon pages in minutes
I can't tell if this a sincere service or a cheeky ironic joke.
wubbert··on Fedora 36: A brave new (DRM/KMS only) world
How will this change affect the users of Fedora?
wubbert··on Nvidia Research Turns 2D Photos into 3D Scenes
IIRC Microsoft had something like this years ago, but the results weren't nearly as smooth or natural looking. I can't remember what it was called, though.
wubbert··on The end of the nice GTK button
What is the reason for everything having flat UIs now?
wubbert··on I think US college education is nearer to collapsing than it appears
>It's all about keeping "corporate culture" aka White, rich and able.

What world are you living? Colleges and "Corporate culture" these days are all about opposing "whiteness."

wubbert··on AEG combi microwave unusable after update: device thinks it is a steam oven
>I'm not aware of any companies keeping servers running for a product that matches the life expectancy of a kitchen appliance

I think this is the key right here. They want to reduce the life expectancy of kitchen appliances to force people to buy new ones sooner.

wubbert··on AEG combi microwave unusable after update: device thinks it is a steam oven
A better question is, why do microwave ovens now need internet connections and software updates?
wubbert··on Using hamburger menus? Try sausage links (2019)
Why bother using either? They are both unnecessarily bloated and a waste of space. What is nothing wrong with a list of plain old links?
wubbert··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
Mozilla does get a lot of their funding from Google...
wubbert··on I found a security issue on a competitor, got fired and served a summons
>are internet cafes still a thing?

I don't know about internet cafes specifically, but pretty much all cafes have internet these days.

wubbert··on Longbet: By 2027, software will be metered/sold by the second
I seriously doubt this. They can make way more money billing everyone per month than by the second. They might make more from the top percent of heavy users, but I bet most users only use it less than an hour a month. There is no way that they can find a price that would be worth charging some who only a couple of minutes while also keeping it affordable for someone who uses it al day every day.
wubbert··on World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate
I swear I've read articles with this exact same title several times over the years, but I can't seem to find any on Google.
wubbert··on Google Image Search Tools not staying active with new searches
Bing behaves in the same way, although I think it has always been like that.
wubbert··on Ray Tracing for the TI-84 CE
When I saw that comment on /g/ about raytracincing on the TI-84 the other day, I just knew someone would post something like this here in a couple days.
wubbert··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
That won't ever happen. If it did, it would disproportionately affect people of color, be declared a racist "feature," and be banned.
wubbert··on Cruise is opening driverless cars to the public in San Francisco
I notice that they are refereed to as "driverless" rather than "self-driving".

Are these actually self-driving or are they remote controlled by a person?

wubbert··on How did LastPass master passwords get compromised?
This is exactly why I have never used LastPass, and have always stuck with KeePass (and KeePassXC). It is much more secure to keep all of my passwords locally than in the cloud.
wubbert··on A system in which soft robots “evolve” to walk or climb
I don't think it's right to computer simulations "robots".
wubbert··on Bird populations declining fast across North America
With the Earth's being consumed at unsustainable levels, genocide and suffering are an inevitability. It's just a question of who is going to do it to who.
