wtk··on Picking berries is my meditation
Walking in cities is often doable on 'autopilot' which annoyingly makes room for my overthinking. Walking in the hills is what probably works better for me as the attention needs to be on the pebbles, stones, holes, path forks.
wtk··on Picking berries is my meditation
If in the process you realize it still triggers you, maybe lessons from dr. Gabor Maté are useful. He teaches that emotional triggers are valuable teachers because they highlight unresolved past trauma.

This is called antonomasia.

edit: is someone at meta/openai trying to age-shame me for using it?

500mg.
wtk··on What nicotine does to your brain
It does seem to help with focus, but my attempts to curb adhd and brain fog happily didn’t stop at nicotine. Niacinamide (B3) seems to do much better job for me, without the smell, nausea, and it works longer.

wtk··on Stem cell therapy trial reverses "irreversible" damage to cornea
My mom is 76 and she had a virus ruin one of corneas. I wish this was already a common practice but I doubt she will be able to benefit from this.

I saved this story to understand more about cars and inspire myself and others to DIY stuff, great!
wtk··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
I checked twice in disbelief, but amongst many many places - London (UK) not being listed was surprising to me. I thought it's maybe some extra challenge of the oldest subway system.
wtk··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
Their website doesn't include London in the UK section (https://TRANSITAPP.COM/REGION).

What if that's just some illegal content that was reported? Even archived on purpose in the first place. Would that result in banning the whole domain?
wtk··on How to succeed in MrBeast production (Leaked PDF)
On another hand it's a point of turning for all those that dismiss it like yourselves. Maybe culture needs this so all "bad curiosities" are catered for, so it can serve as a base for more ambitious next steps.
wtk··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
It's absolutely true. At work I keep a notepad open where I write down questions to get to the bottom of things. What occasionally stops me is shame that I might be asking my peers too silly questions as expected from my level. It's a daily struggle but there's no other way for me. Life's about learning and growing so you better get the right mindset for it.

Is it just creatine? I've had some good results - improved mental clarity, just to discover it has taurine added.

wtk··on Ask HN: DIY ice bath equation for water cooling
A bit of an offtopic: lucky (unlucky) to live in a country where winter means temperature around 0 (down to -5/-8 C) I simply put a 210L rainwater collector on my balcony. Best thing ever to be able to take an ice dip from comfort of my home - with an airbike for warm-ups, and a warm shower. I'm not a giant, so 210L is enough to duck and get covered to level of my shoulders. Below €20 and zero effect on electricity bill :)

Thing of beauty:)
wtk··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
I haven't tought about it, but now that you mentioned it seems obvious. It's more of a background color, when I for example watch tv in another part of that room. It gives an ambient so I see shapes of furnitures but it doesn't attract attiention. Also it's subtle dark blue, nothing like the one that shines brightly from your phone straight into your eyes (I think it matters). I also never have problems falling asleep, since I get up early, I fall asleep in a matter of few minutes around 10-11pm.
wtk··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
(not all are computer peripherals, but other comments seem wider than initial criteria)

* whiteboard placed on a painting easel next to my desk (when I don't use whiteboard, I can use the easel it to paint acrylic) - about 90x120 cm. I put my tasks for work, but also pick exercises with checkbox to do during the day.

* AKAI mpk mini - when tired of work, can jump over to Ableton like software and relax

* MX Master 3S - ordered kind of accidentally, stayed as solid replacement of previously used Apple Trackpad.

* cutting board as mouse mat: https://www.olfa.net.pl/products/Mata-do-ciecia-CM-A4-RC.htm... If I need to cut something, it's there. As a downside - it might be wearing off my mouse quicker.

* wifi/assistant controlled light bulb behind the monitor. Easily to regulate light around my screen - bright when needed, switched to blue in the evening.

* Varier Variable Balans (bought 2nd hand for 20% of original price) - works nicely with electric-standing desk from Ikea.

wtk··on Ask HN: Good resources to become financially literate
Sorry, I mixed up one thing: Paid for things with credit card. Got paid salary on current account but not paying back credit card out of fear of having 0 on current account. Paying fees while the money on current account just sits there, making that person believe to not be broke. Ridiculous
wtk··on Ask HN: Good resources to become financially literate
To me it seems like a lot of people enjoy having things more than being free and not having to worry about getting paid. Also 'spend less than you earn'. As simple as that - yet people struggle to follow this. It also boggled my mind to find that someone with masters degree believed they had money - despite it being cash withdrawn from a credit card. When challenged why do they not pay back their credit card - I heard it's the feeling of empty account, and that money is for -just in case-. Yeah, you are paying % monthly on that just in case, that you could get from a credit card if it really happened. That $ on the account also was affecting that person's spending habits - thanks to the avoidance the feeling of being out of money. Crazy - money illiteracy is real.
wtk··on Health Services as Credence Goods: a Field Experiment (2020)
When I lived in the UK I went to a dentist who recommended to treat 5 or 6 cavities. I only wanted a check-up as I planned to fix anything in Poland which I regularly visited. There I heard that only 2 were actually something worth taking care of. I thought maybe different countries have different standards for what needs attention.
