wtdata··on Drones piloted by climate-change activists target Heathrow
Did you though the same when we were told that in 20 year the Earth would be unhabitable due to the holes in the ozone layer and that it would take hundreds of not thousands of years to heal (that was 25 years ago btw)?

How about when Al Gore told your that inconvenient truth that the sea levels world rise 100m during the next decade (that was 15 years ago btw)?

wtdata··on Drones piloted by climate-change activists target Heathrow
> However, I also think that the old adage "desperate times call for desperate measures" applies here.

If they were really into desperate measures, their actions would be targeting China (you know, that country that now produces more CO2 than all the Western countries combined and that is set to keep greatly increasing it during the next decade), not the only set of developed countries that actually did something and greatly decreased their CO2 emissions in the last decades.

wtdata··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
Any idea of a similar extension for Firefox?
wtdata··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
Been desperately searching for something similar for Firefox, but no luck so far.
wtdata··on Browser tabs are probably the wrong metaphor
I actually changed to Chrome only for this. I have been looking for months for something like Workona for Firefox but to no avail.

I used Firefox for years and I want to continue using it, but for my way of work (multiple tabs open in several spaces and changing computers often) Workona is just great, nothing comes close.

wtdata··on Use of Bitcoin causes around 22 megatons in CO2 emissions annually
Again this tired strawman argument?

Gold mining produces several orders of magnitude less CO2 pollution than Bitcoin. Besides that, gold mining processes are ever increasingly more efficient, while Bitcoin, by design, is every increasingly less efficient to mine.

wtdata··on R vs. Python for Data Science
Sincerely, the present question for me is if I should start investing heavily in Julia. Eventually Python (like every other language) will be superseded by some new and better suited language for a set of problems. The question is if it will be Julia now, or some other in the future.
wtdata··on India heatwave temperatures pass 50 Celsius
India is the country with biggest population density in the planet (barring some micro nation), why does everyone keep giving India a pass for having absolutely no regard for sustainability and keep exploding their population by having way more children than those they could actually provide with a good life (if not environmentaly, at least economically) ?

Should we really expect the same level of life for the children of couples that had 2 children and were able to properly provide for then, and for children of couples that had 6 children when they couldn't even provide properly for 2?

wtdata··on India heatwave temperatures pass 50 Celsius
> just wait till you see the number arriving due to the fuel we burn.

But in the case is the fuel they burn, right? India is projected to become the 2nd biggest producer of CO2 (behind China) this decade.

Also, I go around here and gasoline is so cheap that people don't care about waste. Drivers let their cars with the motor on while they go to buy some small thing to eat or drink.

wtdata··on US energy department rebrands fossil fuels as 'molecules of freedom'
The Guardian became a joke, they are so biased they can't even recognise humour.
wtdata··on Yellow Vest Facebook group with 350k members frozen on European election day
> People are not forced to stop talking about politics on a public forum the day of the elections, that's complete bullshit.

They actually are in some European countries. France included.

EDIT: Link to the law in question in the official site for FRance with English translation:

"From the day before the election at midnight, it is forbidden to distribute or have distributed newsletters, circulars and other documents.

From the eve of the poll at midnight, it is also forbidden to broadcast or cause any message that has the character of electoral propaganda to be disseminated by any means of communication to the public by electronic means."

wtdata··on Google revives controversial cold-fusion experiments
In the article it points out that although the results are negative when it comes to cold fusion, they had positive results about connected themes like materials research.
wtdata··on [dead]
I see people being attacked to - the point of destroying their life - for denouncing far left propaganda though. At least you can denounce far right propaganda without the fear of repercussions.

Let's look at the BLM movement. Just showing the fact that a white person is twice more likely to be shot by the police [1] per violent crime committed [2], is of course a sure way to get their public life destroyed, no matter if it is the truth according to all factual data.

wtdata··on The Huawei Disaster Reveals Google’s Iron Grip on Android
I would like to see an open source project taking the spot here, not Huawei doing the same (actually probably worst) thing as Google and create their own semi-closed OS.

In fact, in Huawei's particular case, I don't even think it will be a push to create momentum for a truly open smartphone OS out of necessity, after all, Huawei goes through great lengths to keep the bootloader in their phones locked.

wtdata··on World's richest 10% produce half of global carbon emissions (2015) [pdf]
It's the new-age version of the Western exceptionalism: Everything that happens in the world - as long as it is bad - should be attributed to the West.

Most people pretending to care about the environment, aren't really interested in protecting the environment from those that destroy it at all, they are just interested in - by any way - attack the foundations of Western countries so that they can build their dystopian dream from its ashes.

Of course that while they do that, China, and soon India, will pollute so much that will make it extremely difficult to live in here. But, that's really a small price to pay to make the West pay for their sins of the past - real or imaginary.

wtdata··on World's richest 10% produce half of global carbon emissions (2015) [pdf]
Developed countries actually are doing relatively well when it comes to CO2 emissions. EU reduced theirs in 25% the last 30 years. USA and most of others maintained them in those 30 years.

It's mainly China (it increased theirs in 300% in 30 years) that is the problem.

Legislation and treaties ate mostly worthless, when only the developed world does what they actually agree to, while China keeps making empty promises that they never fulfill.

----

P.S. I also don't think that environmental data per capita makes much sense. What we should be looking at is environment metrics per land/sea area: you (a country) has control over a part of the planet, so they have to use that part in a way that they don't over tax those natural resources (for CO2 this is basically directly proportional to the full area of the country).

wtdata··on Elastic energy storage in the shoulder: evolution of high-speed throwing in Homo
That is an interesting explanation, but felines usually hunt in the night and our low light vision wouldn't allow our ancestors to defend themselves in a way that relied so much in accuracy during the dark.
wtdata··on Almost 40% of Americans Would Struggle to Cover a $400 Emergency
I would say it's because of their consumerist culture and financial illiteracy, not because of extremely low wages.

I wonder how many of these 40% have a high end smartphone and a big LCD TV in their living room.

wtdata··on Japan Begins Experiment of Opening to Immigration
Again, why shouldn't they? 2.5 children is a perfectly acceptable number.

Also, the birthrate in the USA (and most Western world) is already below the replacement rate for decades now. [1]

[1] https://www.iheart.com/content/2019-05-15-birth-rate-in-unit...

EDIT: Sorry, I wasn't understanding your point that families can't afford to have as many kids as they could one generation ago. I agree with you.

wtdata··on Japan Begins Experiment of Opening to Immigration
Why were you shocked? 2.5 children per couple is just slightly above the replacement rate.
wtdata··on Study Pinpoints Source of Banned Gas That Saps Ozone Layer: Eastern China
Sincerely, all this environmentalist's manifestations we are seeing in EU, would actually make sense if they where in front of the Chinese embassies here.

Instead they keep demanding local actions from the EU, as if the EU hasn't been in the forefront of environmental protection for almost half a century now. This way they are just diverting the attention away from the real main issue: China.

wtdata··on Frigid Offices Might Be Killing Women’s Productivity
Actually what the proper article tells is that woman productivity increases with temperature, but that man productivity decreases (up to a point). [1]

But of course, that title wouldn't be "click-baity" enough in our present political climate.

But we actually do as long is it's not a life treatning disease.

As an example, I am now waiting 2 months to see my family doctor (I just need prescriptions for simple anti histamines, since it's cheaper that way), and 3 years to see a dermatologist for a routine check.

On the other side, a member of my family unfortunately was diagnosed cancer about 3 weeks ago, and she had several medical appointments every week since then.

wtdata··on Trump unveils 'merit-based' immigration policy plan
Sure, but on the other side, the pay for those jobs would also have a bigger pressure on them to increase.

Someone will always have to do those jobs (at least for a long time until when/if machines do them), we shouldn't expect them to be fulfilled only by immigrants willing to take jobs that nobody else wants.

In Scandinavia - up to a degree - those kind of jobs carry a big pay and a set of perks that makes people actually wanting to take them, instead of being a last resort activity. It also helps create a positive view in society about those jobs instead of being a motive for social discrimination.

wtdata··on New Game: Minecraft Earth
This is brilliant... and PKDickian (is this a term? it should be).

We can imagine a distopic future with a thin boundary between the physical world and VR where you would travel through totally destitute neighbourhoods in real life, while seeing great works of art in VR that were built by the users of a virtual world game akin to this.

wtdata··on SAT to Add ‘Adversity Score’ That Rates Students’ Hardships
In part this initiative rewards bad parenting and lack of responsibility for raising your kids.

If you made imense effort to provide the best education possible to your child, to put him in a good school (even if that meant depriving yourself from a better material life and having 2 jobs), if you kept a non perfect marriage because that would be better for your child, if you only had one kid because you couldn't afford to provide a good education for more than one, what this law is telling you is: bad luck, you shouldn't have done it because now, we are going to adjust his score back for it so that none of that matters.

wtdata··on Where does your plastic waste end up?
From the article: “I hate seeing my country as the dumpsite for the developed world,” said Yeo Bee Yin, whose full title is Minister for Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change, and Environment. She declared that “no developing nation should be the dumping site for the developed world.”

This hypocrisy is appalling. They just have to stop importing those plastics with the false promise they are going to recycle it or dispose of it properly while they get paid for it.

Nobody is forcing Malasya to take anything, in fact Malasya is happily engaging in a bid with other countries to import that garbage for the best price.

If these countries weren't lying this all time and only took the plastics they can actually cleanly dispose of or recycle, the West would be (at a greater expense is true) getting rid of them properly during all this time.
