wpm··on Show HN: JBR-001 – An open-source 3D printable desktop robot
The cheap Chinese clones don't have to pay for any of the software that Arduino develops so yeah it makes sense they can sell them for cheaper.
wpm··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
"GPT-6 models have a tendency to be low initiative beyond what the prompt tells them"

This is a plus in my opinion.

wpm··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
> There is a complex history of “whose fault was it” - neither side has clean hands.

As is true in every war.

The question is who started it.

wpm··on When did Google get so weird?
They could; those were opt-in classes, neither of my parents took them. In my case, it was because my mom didn't care, and my dad didn't think he needed them (worked at IBM in field tech). I imagine most folks were in the same boat.

I wouldn't have taken keyboarding if I hadn't been forced to at the age of 8. I hated keyboarding classes. I am so glad I took them now. I hated doing boring research projects and looking crap up on Yahoo's Directory. I love that I have a basic understanding of how to rate and investigate a website's trustworthiness. Mfers don't even look at the "About" section anymore.

wpm··on Show HN: PaperMono, e-ink fridge magnet shopping list with mobile web page
The Xteink might be a solid choice for that actually
wpm··on When did Google get so weird?
The problem was our parents never got this course, and sadly, neither did the generations after us. "Computer" Class for me (born early 90s) was keyboarding -> how to find information online -> how to evaluate and rate itegrity of internet sources -> Microsoft Office.

The kids who stopped getting that are probabaly old enough for a bachelors degree now. Today, the schools mostly just hand them an iPad and a Google Workspace sign-in and pretend everything is fine.

wpm··on Factorio that you can touch
I first beat Factorio on a 2012 MacBook Pro with integrated graphics. It is not a hard game to run until you get into the mega-megabase size, and even then you are typically CPU-bound.
wpm··on What to do when your Waymo holds up a Secret Service motorcade
I see you never driven with my mother.
wpm··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Eh, whatever
wpm··on First Autonomous Flight Across the United States
There was an onboard safety pilot so it's no different than a normal flight into an ILS airport where autopilot does basically everything.

I do also wonder though what future regulations will look like, and what the FAA has cooking already for fully automated jets and so on.

wpm··on Whirlpool Washer Transmission Repair (2007)
Clutches can wear out too, everything will still work but the washer won't really agitate well.
wpm··on The Hierarchy of Money
I felt that it was neither AI-generated or lacked context.
wpm··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
Try disabling any of the launchd tasks related to it, odds are theres a service that starts at boot/login regardless of any user-facing setting that do nothing if they're all turned off (just like iCloud related daemons).

Odds are you'll probably run into something that requires you to disable SIP, like I did when I got tired of mediaanalysisd eating up CPU cycles on a 2018 Mac mini.

wpm··on BYD Slashes Price of Electric Car and Becomes Cheapest in Australia [video]
Regulatory capture, legalized bribery whoops I mean political donations, and protectionism. Gotta let Detroit keep making crappy bro-dozers that get 15MPG.
wpm··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
Command+up arrow and down arrow behave exactly as you say on my computer: like home and end do on PC/Linux. Command left and right for how it also behaves on Linux/PC if you're in a text field. They always have? I use that combo all the time and only have issues in Safari tabs that overload the arrow keys with bullshit.
wpm··on Show HN: Neobrutalism.dev – Just added Base UI support and added new color theme
The under-the-hood technicalities are part of it, but I didn't call it Corporate Memphis for nothing. What hallmarks of the Brutalist style do you think this exhibits, in-so-far as an architectural style can be applied to the web?
wpm··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
I'm thinking of selling my Index and my Vision Pro for one. The screens/tech in the Vision Pro is remarkable, but sadly the iron grip of the App Store Guidelines means none of it is really accessible for any interesting applications. The AVP App Store is a pathetic ghost town. I'd much rather have a less technically capable headset but have it be completely open.
wpm··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
The price is basically the same as the Index was at launch 7 years ago. With the devaluing of the currency, the increase in specs and capabilities, and the current component suppy crisis, it is a deal. Adjusted for inflation the Index would cost $1300 today, which now gets you a Frame with 1TB of internal storage.
wpm··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Broadcom would buy up all of Oracle's useful IP and patents and continue the grift.
wpm··on Show HN: Neobrutalism.dev – Just added Base UI support and added new color theme
Neo doesn't mean it can just be a completely different thing, it means its a modern take on the same thing from before but slightly evolved. Neo-Classicism still looks like Classicism. Neo Nazis are still Nazis.

If I create something called Neo-Cuisine, you'd expect the result to be edible. If I see something calling itself "Neo-Brutalist Architecture", I'd expect it to look like Brutalism, or have some hallmark of the style. e.g. raw, but a different material new to the time period).

As far as web design, there's nothing "raw" about 100s of dependencies and animated charts and rounded rects and opinionated fonts and the rest of the this pastiche in "64 components, charts and star shapes for React and Tailwind v4. Built on shadcn/ui and Base UI." This is just Corporate Memphis + dialog aesthetics[0]

wpm··on Apple's Dimensional Drawings
Shapr is probably a decent candidate for this, though maybe in a few years. It feels like they are the Pixelmator to Autodesk's Photoshop (Fusion). Though I don't like that I have to "Contact Sales" to be able to save my models on-prem, give me a goddamn break.
wpm··on I'm being cyberattacked by Tesla, Inc
This is HN plenty of us host servers at home and understand the obviously true fact that you can't really stop it forever.

But that obviously isn't what we're talking about here. We're talking about a massive multibillion dollar corporation breaking the rules of a community project they joined by committing a Jr Sysadmin grade fuck up and ghosting the people who's infrastructure they have now placed in the crosshairs of serious, enterprise grade automated vulnerability testing from a company who might now inadvertently be committing a felony.

That's a bit different than getting a few dozen lazy hits a day because some botnet got to your IP in the Shodan and saw the Plex port open.

wpm··on TailTalk: A modern async user space AppleTalk stack with Rust and Tokio
Using TailTalk on my modern Mac, I can expose a file share accessible to my Macintosh Plus, which has a simulated SCSI Ethernet adapter bridged to a Pi Pico 2W's wireless connection via a BlueSCSI.
wpm··on P(doom)
Yes.
wpm··on Homebrew 7.0.0
MacPorts has been there this whole time.
wpm··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Yeah YOU couldn't be the problem, no sir, no way, no how!
wpm··on The Deathray: A simple way for an untrusted site to freeze a Mac
Yes, but it didn't kernel panic my computer, it just forced WindowServer to quit, but it "helpfully" reopens all of your windows/apps, so it reloads the tab that caused the deadlock to begin with, rinse and repeat.

It's always funny to me when you put computers into such states. Last time I was tickled this was was when I nuked the TCC database permissions for Zoom while in a meeting, sharing my screen, using my microphone and camera. The OS rrrrreally didn't like that.

wpm··on iPhone Duo
I did justify it, you're the one refusing to accept any of the subjective justifications. If you're not going to accept any of them, why are you asking for justifications? Just "fuck off"
wpm··on iPhone Duo
No, I'm not a heathen, I move off to the side, standing in front of the weird dense health-nut bread no one buys.

And I'm not going to let anyone tell me I'm a fucking weirdo for looking things up at the grocery store, I see people doing it all the time. They're all on their fucking phones!

wpm··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
They aren't for you, apparently. Too bad. I guess no one gets one since it doesn't work for your use case and life in particular.

And nothing says the train must take 30 hours. 12H of highway driving is what, 600 miles? 1000? The slowest high speed rail lines in China have a design speed of 120mph. Some go 240mph. So that 600 mile trip could take 5 hours. The 1000 mile trip could take 8 and some change. Add in an hour or so to account for stops.

Like, I struggle to imagine how every goddamn conversation I have about rail in the US ends up like this, with someone mistaking my "heres what COULD be" with a comparison to "here's what IS". Do you not think that someone advocating for trains doesn't understand how crappy they are right now? That I'm advocating you take the train despite all of the reasons you mentioned its awful? Do you think the fact that tickets can command that price despite taking 30 hours indicates a latent demand?
