worklogin··on Linux workstation security checklist
I suppose SSH is easier to use on machines you don't own, but the best practice would be to set up a VPN tunnel. 6 - 1/2 dozen.
worklogin··on Christopher Poole Reveals Why He Walked Away from 4Chan
Wait, in GamerGate it was the activist journalists who were writing skewed articles that were the bad actors, wasn't it?
worklogin··on Ubuntu continues to rule the cloud
I don't have the knowledge to support or contest anything except your last sentence. yum's UI is the only thing I like more than apt-get. But yum doesn't have the concept of depends vs. recommends, so installing nginx, for example, REQUIRES pulling down geo-IP libraries that are entirely unnecessary.
worklogin··on UK surveillance “worse than 1984” says new UN privacy chief
I have several issues with your post.

1) Public places /used/ to be private! In practice, anyway, because CCTV wasn't ubiquitous, and constant recording by every passerby wasn't the norm. It's a public space, but 24/7 recording by a dozen private parties at a time is NOT the norm historically.

2) If most of our surveillance online is "by consent" but no one reads the EULA or signs anything, is it really consent? Just because people are ignorant to the problems, or do not feel immediate impact of online surveillance, doesn't make it right or consensual.

worklogin··on My husband needed therapy after working for Amazon
So you're saying a company should have full time workers who ONLY monitor a specific system, separate from its day-to-day maintenance?

worklogin··on Even when told not to, Windows 10 doesn't stop talking to Microsoft
Look. Seriously. Like, totally.

Not everyone interested in Tor is educated enough to reinstall an OS. Or they need Windows for something else they do. Or 50 other things. Or maybe we're concerned about VPN leakage, or any other thing than tor that we might use to obfuscate traffic.

worklogin··on GNU Mailman is now hosted on GitLab
I guarantee you don't need the "middle" pack for a two-dev shop. Either use their hosted solution, host your own CE, or spend $390 a year to get the EE code with minimal support.
worklogin··on GNU Mailman is now hosted on GitLab
Reverse racism is used (in my experience) to define racist behaviors taken as a response to "original" racism. Examples include quota systems at universities, or otherwise discriminating against whites/majorities in the name of social justice.

It's racism, but with a modifier to make it clear what's being talked about. I don't know why you're trying so hard to make it "not a thing".

worklogin··on GitHub threatens to shut down a repository for using the word 'retard'
Gettin' real tired of people parroting this. Anyone who has used Github knows there is plenty of data (issues, labels, wikis) that aren't forked when you clone a GH repo.
worklogin··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
Their ANTISPAM policy is draconian, but I like their interface. I like that root passwords are in the web interface instead of going through email. Finally, their presence in more datacenters is useful for someone in the middle of the country.
worklogin··on Why We Shut Down Reddit’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ Forum
Subscription numbers on a default sub are useless.
worklogin··on Why We Shut Down Reddit’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ Forum
>The shutdowns of the other subreddits were petulant moves by power mods to treat their users as pawns and hockey pucks. They were punishing their users because they were in a power struggle with the admins. That's wrong.

Reddit is a free chat site with a decentralized power structure (in theory). Reddit can be useful, and I know there are supportive subs there, but /r/gaming and /r/science going down for a day was not harmful. People probably got a bit more sun that day.

worklogin··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
That's what Rackspace does. I haven't used them in a while, but it looks like it's ALL they do now. (moved to DO, since it was half the cost and I /do/ have enough sysadmin chops to keep two linux servers patched).

worklogin··on IPv6 Exhaustion Counter
While others are asking "Why is CompanyA buying a /48 a week?", my question is "Why isn't ISP-A asking CompanyA why they need a /48 a week?"

IPv6 operates in several of these hierarchical subnets. A /64 is the smallest, and is usually for customers and edges. A /48 or /52 is reasonable for a datacenter, as it provides up to 2^12 subnets.

But even then, doing a /48 per DC, there is no reason for not-Huge-Cloud-Provider to be gathering that much IP.

worklogin··on IPv6 Exhaustion Counter
How about working for a company with sensitive defense or financial information, for which access from China/Russia/Ukraine is completely unnecessary?

GeoIP blocking is not one's only defense, of course, but it's one of many tools to keep the low-to-mid level groups at bay.

worklogin··on Revisiting how we build Firefox
What a comment! You made a binary discussion from a nuanced one. The question is whether an attractive UI (which, surprise, matters to many people) is worth focusing developer effort. Several comments in this thread advocate that non-native UIs look tacky, and that it would do well for the product to have native rendering.

As an aside, it's the no. 1 reason I don't use Atom: An ugly, slow UI that doesn't render native elements.

So no, it's not indefensible. I think your conspirator's OP comment "As a non-OSX user, I don't care about your UX" is more vain.

worklogin··on What went wrong: SCTP (2009)
For the record, IP source routing has its use cases. It's done via firewall or high-end router policy, and it's not a federated protocol. but it's handy.
worklogin··on The ‘cosplay Caliphate’ of ISIS is a deadly fantasy, but a familiar one
> The christian right of the US has the apocalyptic narrative of the Rapture, just waiting for the right circumstances to blow into the same kind of fanatic destruction as that of ISIS.

You literally say the Christian right is waiting for the right time to commit acts like ISIS.

worklogin··on The ‘cosplay Caliphate’ of ISIS is a deadly fantasy, but a familiar one
If you are insinuating that the radical Christian right is waiting for a moment to commit the same actions as ISIS, then I believe your are completely incorrect.

They're crazy, and they expect more violence and chaos to break out, but being familiar as I am with some people who have the Rapture belief you allude to, I guarantee you there isn't a desire to commit violence against masses of innocent people. They /THINK/ violence will be committed, by Satan, against non-believers, but they will not act on it. Which means it won't happen.

worklogin··on Cisco Announces Intent to Acquire OpenDNS
Licensing is huge for not-a-mama-papa company.

Support is also a bear. I can't think of a time Cisco has significantly improved an acquisition in the near term.

It's not just perceived control - it's the reenforcement. We all speed, but we always speed just a bit over the limit. Raise the limit, people raise their speed.

10 year olds goaded on by friends shouldn't be looking at the kinds of materials that are 18+ on the net today. Heck, most of Reddit isn't appropriate for growing minds.

worklogin··on Most Internet anonymity software leaks users’ details
I once posted to /r/tor (or /r/onions, I forget) that the Tor Browser Bundle leaks the current browser window size ( instead of providing a universal value) thus increasing uniqueness on tools like Panopticlick. Firefox, for the same value, provides screen resolution, not window resolution.
worklogin··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
Be civil. Don't say things you wouldn't say in a face-to-face conversation. Avoid gratuitous negativity.

When disagreeing, please reply to the argument instead of calling names. E.g. "That is idiotic; 1 + 1 is 2, not 3" can be shortened to "1 + 1 is 2, not 3."

They didn't have to include the postscript. It came off poorly. I'm not posting this to social media trying to get OP fired, but I will call out when people include contentless swipes at other peoples' legitimate posts.

worklogin··on Same-Sex Marriage Is a Right, Supreme Court Rules
>Of course, there are even more powerful arguments in favor of marriage equality. For one thing, the black letter language of the Constitution, right smack in the beginning of it prior to any amendments, requires all the states to honor each other's judicial proceedings, public acts, and records.

It's not clear cut as you imply. If it were, Concealed Carry Licenses for handguns would have reciprocity everywhere.
