workingdog··on New Zealand Navy ship sank off Samoa because autopilot was left on, inquiry
Unless they fit the criteria, we're not supposed to talk about incompetent people in positions of power.
workingdog··on How to raise children with grit (2019)
You can prepare your kids for their natural pendulum swing. I told mine it's natural to rebel and do the opposite of what your parents do, make sure you understand, and don't unintentionally swing too far in the other direction.
workingdog··on Tuberculosis is rising in the U.S. again. How did we get here?
TB was basicallty gone from the US.

Until we accepted millions of unscreened people from outside the US where TB was more common.

workingdog··on When you ask ChatGPT "Tell me a story" it's always is about a girl named Elara
Why are we shocked?

Computers should generally give us the same output with the same input.

workingdog··on Illegal immigrants are a small % of total immigrant population in many countries
We're not governed by poetry on statues. If we decide we're full, that's ok.
workingdog··on Illegal immigrants are a small % of total immigrant population in many countries
It's still too high.

Illegal immigration often ruins the idea of immigration in the minds of the native population.

workingdog··on Before you can have Smalltalk, you must first defeat capitalism?
The proletariat can rock that soviet tech, making some lips/forth/prolog insanity. Once they're done, I'll simulate it at 10,000 times native speed on one core of my Apple iThing.
workingdog··on The "child identifies as wolf" story was only ever about bullying
TLDR: Other than the child identifying as a wolf, the child doesn't identify as a wolf. And you're a bully for even noticing. Bully.
workingdog··on America's Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind
More awesome young men for my company to hire!

I used to try and make my team look like a Star Trek crew. Not anymore. Competence over anything.

workingdog··on America's Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind
Nowadays? It's so bad and cringeworthy that my young sons picked up on the STEM girlie nonsense and are actively rebelling against it and running with whatever they have. Leaving the coddled scrubs behind.
workingdog··on Maggie Smith has died
I don't think you can understand the 1960s without seeing her glorious movie, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

It captures the tension of social norms and rebellion and, if one pays attention, the natural consequences of unbridled enthusiasm.

workingdog··on Why So Many People Are Going "No Contact" with Their Parents
How we treat family members is the most accurate indication of our decency. We chose our friends, so their company is easy. It's when we're forced to reckon with people we don't choose. That is the actual test of our grace.
workingdog··on Change to FreeBSD release scheduling and support period
I want to reiterate the thanks as well. Updates work so much better than in the past.

Dealing with twenty files of this does get annoying.

I'm sure I got the terms wrong. Fix this somehow. I wouldn't care if support was only two years, as otherwise, everything upgrading is seamless.

Thanks again for everything you've done!

workingdog··on 'Money always wins': Inside Sydney's underground tree-killing industry
You may think that, but I couldn't possibly comment.

I was trying to convey that laws should be carefully written, not to motivate people to do things that keep them inside the law yet are still damaging.

workingdog··on 'Money always wins': Inside Sydney's underground tree-killing industry
I love trees. I plant a lot of them.

I noticed one friendly neighbor remark that one of our oldest cedars was a fine specimen and that he wanted to register it.

It got girdled, and I cut it down as soon as possible. I planted three trees.

workingdog··on China Cracks Down on Extreme Nationalism and Hate-Speech After Suzhou Slaying
Not just a China problem. Twitter and Facebook seem drastically more polarising nowadays.

We're allowed to talk about things that were taboo until just recently: the 3rd world colonizing Western countries, Jewish and Arab struggles, and child grooming, for example.

However, many people can then can overgeneralize and it becomes another problem.

workingdog··on I would have shit in that alley, too
The best thing about America is that we'll eventually colonize the moon, and we'll have Americans homeless there too.
workingdog··on I would have shit in that alley, too
Your sunscreen and mylar blankets ideas are gold; I will swipe that idea for our church's packs.

We have two items that are not on your list that our church has: a micro-sized rubber duck for frivolity (cost $.05) and a cheap wash rag (cost $.15)

workingdog··on I would have shit in that alley, too
It's more of a modern problem:

Old-school homeless would shit in the toilet.

New school homeless on fentanyl sometimes leave drug paraphernalia. Hence, businesses won't let randos in their toilets. And, therefore, more shitting on the sidewalk.

workingdog··on Stigma against benefits has made devastating poverty acceptable in Britain
Giving people money isn't the same thing as welfare.

Ask any drug addict what they would do with more money. Most of them are truthful.

workingdog··on We Just Witnessed the Biggest Supreme Court Power Grab Since 1803
Congress will have to be specific, yes. And we'll be able to vote them out if we don't like what they say.
workingdog··on Germany's autobahn bridges falling apart
Indeed!

"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury."

-Elmer T. Peterson misquoting Alexander Tytler.

workingdog··on Are animals conscious? New research
If they weren't conscious, then their love for us would be meaningless.
workingdog··on NLRB judge declares non-compete clause is an unfair labor practice
There's always a reference.

It doesn't have to be the boss; it could be a co-worker. Generally written, it is hard to get, but almost always available with a phone call after hours.

Asking the person, "Would you rehire this person?" or "Would you like to work with this person?" has a 95% answer rate and says everything.

If the prospect can't connect you with a phone call to one of their co-workers, that tells us what we need to know.

workingdog··on Sandy Hook families want to seize Alex Jones' social media accounts
The side that tells us that men can become women.
workingdog··on VBScript deprecation: Timelines and next steps
Whatever you have that's calling the Powershell script just has to tell the Powershell system that it's ok to run the unsigned script. The default is just to keep people from double-clicking rando Powershell script files and all hell breaking loose.
workingdog··on California Senate Passes Bill Requiring Passive Speed Limiters
General advice:

Stay in the second to right lane. Never go more than 7 miles over. After 10 miles over, the tickets get expensive, and the police have more of a reason to pull you over. 7 mph accounts for speedometer errors and makes you part of the pack but not the speediest.

Make your car look respectable; Like it's driven by a person who could contest a ticket.

If pulled over: Be polite but not obsequious. When asked, immediately admit to going 7 miles over as a matter of fact so you don't get tailgaters. You'll most likely get a warning.

workingdog··on After Legalizing Raw Milk, Legislators Fall Ill from Drinking Raw Milk (2016)
I think it's stupid, but some of my behaviors seem stupid to others: I worship an invisible deity. Some people get carbon pushed into their skin. Other people change their sex by modifying body parts.

We should be free to do (generally) whatever the heck we want to do.

workingdog··on Zombie 2nd mortgages are coming to life, threatening 1000s of Americans' homes
Once the lender stops sending statements, the loan should be frozen at that amount. By not sending statements, they hide the problem and shouldn't be allowed to benefit by later springing the problem onto someone who had no idea there was a problem.
workingdog··on Beekeeper furious over destruction of $2M honey crop
If anybody is on the fence, in my opinion, Manuka honey from NZ is worth the expense at least once to try. It has a unique spiciness to it.

Costco sometimes sells it, and they're good about making sure their products aren't fakes.
