woozyolliew··on OpenAI's super PAC is funding AI-generated news site attacking industry critics
Yeah. Could be astroturfing. Could just be a surge in enthusiasm after 10 years when all we had to be excited about was a new Javascript framework.

Your analysis by account age might be telling

woozyolliew··on Why can't you tune your guitar? (2019)
I like the music of Aloboi who makes electronic music, often with just intonation

woozyolliew··on Microsoft denies rewriting Windows 11 in Rust using AI
Part of me wonders if this whole post was sarcasm/irony. A frustrated engineer’s projection of what upper management wants engineers to believe?
woozyolliew··on Graph-based AI model maps the future of innovation
One to save for April 1st

Bookmarking Legible News! I have been surviving on https://lite.cnn.com, https://text.npr.org/, and http://68k.news/, but your site is much easier on the eye, so will be taking it for a spin.
woozyolliew··on The Novachord Restoration Project
Really worth listening to some of the final results at the bottom of the page. Sounds fantastic to my ear.
woozyolliew··on A Visual Bibliography of Tree Visualization
I was hoping the related techniques would themselves be organized as a tree! But doesn’t seem like it.
woozyolliew··on The Email Caste's Last Stand
Yeah, definitely a ton of Parkinson’s law at work in these places.

Plus a day out to the park has become even more of a buzzy plastic hellscape.
woozyolliew··on Backyard approaching lighting at Adelaide Airport
That website made me feel sad; seems they’re embattled, and really have a fight on their hands to stop the parkland turning into suburban parking and retail
woozyolliew··on The International Flag of Planet Earth
Whatever this is supposed to be, I’m pretty sure we’d be better off with fewer flags, not more.

woozyolliew··on Vulnerability in Bumble dating app reveals any user's exact location
This seems like a potential use-case for differential privacy. Normally DP is used for protecting individuals within aggregates, but the careful analysis of how much (and what kind) of noise to add could be brought to bear here.
woozyolliew··on To write better, develop a habit of writing

woozyolliew··on The potentially revolutionary Celera 500L aircraft
It does sound a bit too good to be true. But I’d love it to be true!
woozyolliew··on Stories about the B5000 and people who were there (1979)
Immediately loved this bit: “We spent the first two months designing the compiler. Then we coded for a month.“
woozyolliew··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Yeah, there’s probably an awful lot of truth to that. More software eating the world.
woozyolliew··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Never owned a Tesla, but always worried about this when I’ve been inside one.

Elon says they drive themselves now though, so there’s that ;)

woozyolliew··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
I mean, it certainly isn’t perfect at all. It has the down side that you are invited to stare at the screen. But if I’m disciplined, I can get away with a click-glance approach to adjusting things, which is still better than the multi-second hover I had to do with the touchscreen.
woozyolliew··on Honda bucks industry trend by removing touchscreen controls
Always seemed like a cargo cult: iphone good; touch good; buttons bad (steve said).

Let’s hope it’s a new trend! I love that my Audi still has tactile buttons and wheels, and was a big factor in choosing it. My previous car had a touch screen and it was so dangerous having to brace my hand for accuracy and stare at my fingers while driving.

woozyolliew··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
On more than one occasion Oura told me to take things easy because I might be getting sick (colds), and it was right. Great product.
woozyolliew··on The boss who put everyone on 70K
That really seems like a high average, even for the Bay Area. I suspect median total comp is lower, even for FAANG. Also, the company in the article is in the Seattle area. Lastly, even at the extraordinary level of income of $275k, cost of living means that while you’ll be comfortable, you won’t feel especially kingly.

I’d add Portland, Austin, Minneapolis, etc. to your consideration. Comp is 25% lower, but cost of living is even lower than that.

woozyolliew··on Docker for Windows won't run if Razer Synapse driver management tool is running
A somewhat tounge-in-cheek comment: but I wonder if there could be a git/IDE extension to track cut-and-paste code like this (especially from stackoverflow) so that when things are corrected or flagged as broken at the source, that change is propagated to your use of it.
woozyolliew··on Elon Musk: Tons of C++/C engineers needed
I wouldn’t be surprised if they follow a “creaming” strategy. That is, hire a ton at a lowish bar, monitor their performance, and fire 75% of them relatively quickly. Ruthless, perhaps, but consistent with what I have seen from the outside.
woozyolliew··on Hey Dropbox, why can't I compare file versions like this?
Isn’t the track changes feature of Word sufficient? I don’t use Dropbox though so perhaps it loses that..?
woozyolliew··on [dead]
Reminds me a bit of the game Portal. And perhaps someone with the right imagination could make this work in mixed reality?
woozyolliew··on The Light Phone
I tried this when I noticed that I was overusing my phone, and it worked very well. I have kids so can’t completely unplug, but a watch+cellular meant I was contactable for short messages and emergencies but couldn’t sit there mindlessly scrolling.

It was amazing how easily I made friends in bars and cafes like this, simply by looking up and being alert to my environment.

woozyolliew··on Clear and Present Leadership
I value clarity. But I fear some of this advice about being present could be badly misinterpreted by those inclined to micro-management.
woozyolliew··on A Remarkable Case of External Hind Limbs in a Humpback Whale (1921) [pdf]
A couple of years ago I visited a whale exhibition at the natural history museum in London. They had skeletons and models showing the evolution of the whale from a land mammal. The shrinking of the legs/pelvis and eventual detachment from the spine was fascinating to see laid out.
